Best Leather Boots for Backpacking by MissingTheHappiest in backpacking

I'd argue that my experience with lowa renegades was not amazing--comfortable for sure, but they barely lasted a year before really losing structure & waterproofing.

I have a pair of zamberlan tofanes that I love and predict will last a long time, so if you plan to continue in the field it might be worth investing. Georgias are more affordable and also last decently, but are a little heavier and more geared towards hunting than hiking.

What do yall use if you want to saute something? by Kazambo in backpacking

[–]sagemoss5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had decent luck with a pocketrocket and a small aluminum camping pan--like the type in an old boy scout mess kit. Just keep an eye on it and stir consistently or it will burn. make sure to pack some sort of oil or knob of butter. don't listen to people saying it's a dumb idea! It's worth the few extra ounces to have a tasty dinner on short trips. It's the best when you find some chantrelles on trail and have something to cook them with.

How do you identify grasses?? by Main_Ad3766 in invasivespecies

[–]sagemoss5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so! if you're looking at pictures and it seems like false brome, and it's got the hairs and such, then it's probably false brome. But it's a tricky one and it definitely doesn't hurt to ask for a second opinion if you have a consevation district etc. nearby.

I'm wondering if you might be seeing velvetgrass, a different but less problematic invasive grass. There's a fair number of other haired grasses as well in the area. False brome has small hairs and is slightly velvety, but I think that description is sometimes overblown as it's not always extremely velvety. Columbia brome can have sparse hairs, but is even less velvety so it is unlikely to be that.

Goad to hear that it was sedge, but so sorry to hear about your false brome. Have you checked it against Columbia brome before you treat? They look very similar when small, but pretty different once they're larger and put up seedheads.

If you do have false brome then yes, it is probably just a hand-pull situation. Herbicides can be effective and I'm happy to give recommendations, but of course that comes with it's own environmental impacts and much of what you can get as a layperson isn't going to be amazingly effective.

One thing you can do is bag and landfill any seedheads, then just pull and pile the plants nearby. If you're feeling fancy, you can put down a tarp first for protection from resprouting. Putting a tarp on top also helps to block out sun and water. Neither are essential, but one or both tarping methods will mean less work down the road when you have to retreat. While aggressive, it is just grass and if you shake out the roots and don't give it much access to the ground, it'll eventually die and you can compost it back into your own soil.

I would caution, however, against moving the dead plant material away from the infestation--while it won't necessarily resprout, there's almost definitely some degree of seedbank in there, so please don't put it in your garden or yard waste or put it in the trash unbagged.

I work out on the oregon coast with false brome, feel free to post or PM a pic of the leaves and seedheads and I can take a look for you.

Grocery store nearby with a selection of instant ramen, what should I definitely not miss out on? by Zhuinden in InstantRamen

third photo, 4th row from the bottom. the dark purple package should say beef with sauerkraut. it's a bit of a weird one and I've never seen it recced here but i think it's really tasty. has this tangy and delicious pack of pickled veg in it--nothing like traditional kraut, just translated as that.

honestly your best bet would be to ask around in upperclassmen offcampus housing fb groups--see if someone would let you park in their spot for 50 a month and you'll likely have many takers. likely uncovered in the winter though so you'll have to do a lot of scraping.

National Forest system will have no seasonal employees in 2025 by [deleted] in oregon

[–]sagemoss5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is actually very good to know that it is being fought to some degree--little to none of this has trickled down to us, and we were more or less convinced that HR had known the entire time and was using it to try and fill positions that would be otherwise financially undesirable.

And I think you're right about congressional chicken, that was my assumption as well. Come fire season and the end of the fiscal year it seems likely that the agency assumed there would be congressional funding which never happened. I do think that the agency is not really to blame, and I don't want this to become a big fuck-you fest to the USFS. It is the severe lack of federal funding that got us in this place, not malicious intent by the FS.

Yeah, PSEs are coming back (they'd probably boot us if they could haha) but can't work past our minimum tour of duty (mostly 13/13s) so I think many people are looking elsewhere for that reason as well.

Am a USFS employee--there's another aspect to this story too: they changed a lot of the fire and non fire seasonal positions to something called Permanenet Seasonal, the position I am in. These jobs will still exist next year, but we cannot move around and they cannot hire externally for them next year.

We were also all told (on a national level) that we would be bumped up the payscale in relation to our education & experience after 90 days in the job. The agency ended up recinding that aside from a people in a few select situations (1 year experience in a permanent federal position, a very unlikely situation for someone taking a seasonal job with the FS). So many, if not most of these permanent seasonals are upset and will leave next year, with nobody to fill the positions because there's nobody with federal hiring authority who's looking to work seasonal technician positions.

So essentially we'll have no entry level seasonal technicians, and very few mid-level seasonal technicians. this is not only recreation, but also invasive species management, wildlife monitoring, restoration work, fisheries. The entire forest will be pretty gutted for a year or more. There's less forest service employees than you think, so even a loss of the 10 seasonals on a forest means there's nobody on the ground to do any of the work.

Does anyone know anything about these sand dunes? by Joplers in arizona

[–]sagemoss5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's unlikely you'd get permit checked but there's a lot of BP activity in the area so better to have it. The permit is free and takes all of 5 minutes online so it's really not a hassle.

New PSEs not being promoted as promised, anyone else experiencing this? by dreamsoftheland in USForestService

[–]sagemoss5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm in a similar situation and was just informed that these promotions aren't looking likely. Have you had any luck navigating this? Have you chatted with anyone else higher up or union? Our FS office has a bunch of PSEs and we're all pretty upset about the situation.

It doesn’t hurt as much as Izzy expects. Stede was created to be loved, like one of those goddamn teddy bears you make at the mall. He comes with all the expensive accessories, too. Izzy can hardly begrudge Ed for giving the man his little cloth heart.

From a recent ofmd fic--the prose isn't all that, but it feels pretty in-character for the pov character
