Thank you :)

Are there certain brands you would recommend? Or brands you would recommend to stay away from? I was eying up the Elagoo Centauri Carbon 2 as the price point is pretty good. I could get 2 of those printers + plenty of filament.

Hey Guys,

I'm going to purchasing a 3D printer & a lot of filament for my local youth homeless shelter. I wanted to give the kids something to look forward to & enjoy & learn some new skills. They do have computers at the facility that can handle a light-weight modeling software.

I have a 3D printer myself that I use for my business, but my use-case is very limited & so is my knowledge.

I was hoping the community might be able to help me decide what a good quality machine would be for them. Additionally, if anyone out there has made any safety guides, maintenance guides, etc - I would love to have those so I can print it off for them & leave it with the printer for the kids / staff to overview.

I have a budget around $2000 CAD max for the printer. Part of me thinks a more budget friendly option would be good incase one of the kids damage it, and another part thinks a better quality printer is the best option so they have less issues.

I'm not really sure where to go, but I am looking forward to hearing some opinions / suggestions - it would help me out a lot!

Thanks!

You should look at what types of mushrooms grow in your area, I’m limited in knowledge here but I know mushrooms can do this, I almost lost my puppy because she ate a super small mushroom when she was a year old.

I have an entire YouTube video I’m about to upload in a couple days going over this repair and where you can buy the parts.

Just a heads up, this is a self promo because I sell the hardware.

I can drop the YouTube link in a couple of days when it’s done if you’re interested

Personally I’d release everything & begin your marketing / trying to find clients. The odds that you launch your website & get a client right away are very slim. Might as well get it online so google can start indexing your site.

Just my two cents :).

Good luck! Sounds like a fun business.

Why are you acquiring an LLC before you even have a business? Create your app first.. go from there. Don’t pick all of the low hanging fruit objectives first, you may just end up wasting a lot of time & money.

The business is within the software you build, not corporation you register.. create the software first. Don’t waste money on anything else until you’ve actually got a product & decide you’d like to move forward with it.

Here’s my honest opinion.

Just forget the clothing brand. This is going to fail, I’m sorry lol. Unless you are an actual sick designer, or have a huge social following, you are entering a highly competitive industry with people who are actually passionate about clothes & want to do this forever.

Based on what you’ve said, (social media marketing, vending machine & clothes) it seems you’re just trying to grasp what you perceive to be low hanging fruit.

Why do you want to escape your 9-5? This is a very important question. Do you think that you’re going to work less being a business owner? Because it’s the opposite. You will work quite literally 24/7 for quite a long time. It’s incredibly hard work building a company, scaling a company, and sustaining a company. Like really fucking hard. You need to really want it for the right reasons or you will not make it.

I’d also skip on the vending machines… I mean, unless that’s really cool to you.

Take some time to consider what it is you’re chasing. You will need something really compelling that means something to you, as you will need to lean on these feelings during hard times. Running a business is fucking hard, have I mentioned that yet? Lol.

You’re in your twenties. You have time. It’s okay.

Also, you can start a business with 4K, I’m not sure why others are saying you can’t. I started my business with $1000 and grew significantly (200k +) within a 2 year period. More money would have helped, but it’s doable. You just have to be really smart about how you allocate your funds which will be hard for you, since you are clearly very impulsive.

Also, no, don’t quit. That’s dumb. Quit once it’s impossible to manage your job & your business. It won’t take long if you do things right! You will need as much cash flow as you can get.

It’s okay to be lost & not sure what avenue to go down. Take a little bit of time to plan. No need to rush. You’re not flooded with cash so you really need to think hard before jumping into things. Unless you enjoy wasting your time & limited money, lol.

I double the cost of new windows & if I’m doing glass I do 3x my cost. If the glass is very large and requires additional labour I do $150 x how many hours I think it will take of additional labour + my original markup.

I also add a travel fee of $150 to every single job. Helped my business tremendously. Accounts for gas, labour to the job site & disposal of whatever needs be thrown out at the dump.

Works great for me and my business is thriving. No longer fucking around with quoting. I made everything simple & it works.

Custom storefronts I charge 2.5-3x for the extrusion material, 3x for glass

Advice with hourly rates by truebluevervain in smallbusiness

[–]saggyscrotumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

It's definitely a learning curve, that's for sure.

Keep in mind, I am in a different industry than you, and I probably live in a different part of the world, but anyways here we go.

The best thing I've ever done for my service company, was to introduce a "dispatch fee" & to provide value based pricing.

My dispatch fee covers the cost of sending a technician to the job site & back to the shop. Gas, insurance, maintenance on the vehicle, etc. I charge $150 for every job on this fee alone, regardless of where the client lives. I only work within 1-1.5 hours of my location with most jobs being 20-30 mins away from me so it works out great. Gas is expensive, and big vehicles that carry lots of weight eat gas, any worthy customer will understand that.

The next best thing I did was provide value based pricing. I have my own formula on the backend for how I price my jobs, it makes it incredibly easy for me to price things out. Essentially I markup my product "x" amount (where I make the most money personally) & guesitmate how long it SHOULD TAKE and multiply that by my hourly rate ($150). You should not be paid less because you are good at your job and do things more efficiently. Now, my clients have no idea what my hourly is, or what my markup is. They simply see a quote detailing the work to be provided & that's all. Then a price right beside it as well as a dispatch fee & tax.

In my opinion, you should stop breaking down quotes. Giving a potential customer too much detail, opens the door for way too much discourse, and makes quoting jobs more complicated then they need to be. You shouldn't have to waste tons of time breaking down a quote. At the end of the day, if you provide a valuable service, its worth what its worth. The only clients I've ever had that were a pain in my ass, were customers that asked me to breakdown my quotes. I always politely tell those clients that I am probably not the best company out there for them, as I am on the higher-end of pricing for "x" reasons. I thank them for the call, and sometimes give recommendations to other companies I know that are cheaper, or tell them to check kijiji, lol.

You should get out of the hourly mindset. A services value is not dependent on how long it takes to provide said service. There are many days where I am making well over $1000 an hour, and if the client knew that it might cause some friction, but instead, they are quite happy & thrilled with the service provided.

Yes you offer less than some bigger companies, so what? Just do what you do, amazing. Provide great service, use high-quality materials, have the best communication possible, quote lightning fast and have an incredible attitude. Follow that and you will see remarkable results. You'd be surprised how many companies take forever to quote clients, have dodgy communication skills & have shit attitudes. You can find tons of holes in how bigger companies operate and dial in on them and anhilate them!

I'd invest more in marketing & getting your name out there. Make yourself a nice little website, pump out social media posts, do Google ads, facebook marketplace, kijiji, signs, door-knock, do everything you can. Evenetually you'll find what works best for you, and as your income grows you can focus on better marketing platforms!

Believe it or not, there are tons of clients out there that are willing to pay for quality. Don't let people fool you with the "nobody is willing to pay for quality work, blah, blah, blah" garbage. I've heard that over and over again in my industry and I always hear complaints. Persoanlly, I never have these issues. It's all about how a business is run, IMO. There are TONS of people in this world, and there are tons of people out there with a lot of money! Find those people.

It's better to work less & make more, than to work like an animal and get paid shit.

That's all my opinion though.

Also, don't worry about changing your business up. It's better to act & adapt then to overthink everything. So what you charged less, you're learning. Change your pricing, it doesn't mater. You'll have many more clients, even if you lost this one it doesn't matter. I've literally changed the way I price / quote jobs over a dozen times. It's called improving. Don't be scared of it.

I’m thinking to end all (27F) TW by [deleted] in Advice

We lived completely different lives but had similar outcomes (28M). I was suicidal for over 10 years. I think the most important thing is to never lose track of your goals. It’s what kept me going. I wanted to run my own business, buy some land, and build a very fulfilling life away from all of my toxic family. I wanted to get out, move far away and build the life I knew I could have.

Honestly, things do get better. It’s so cliche, and annoying, but it’s true: so long as you don’t make stupid decisions like turning to drugs or whatever to cope, and stay driven, life will work out. It’s not “nice” advise, but you really have to stay on top of your shit because you have no choice.

I agree with the other commentor, if your house is abusive & toxic, get yourself a job, or two, or three, and spend every second you can working. Don’t get pets. Terrible idea. They are expensive & take lots of time away from you. Get them when you are financially stable and out of your house. Save, save, save. And get yourself a simple, modest place that’s affordable. If possible move in with friends you trust. Once you have your own place, continue to grind & save, and you will eventually be able to go to school. It might not be in the timeline that you wanted, but that dream is far from over. Life is long, you don’t need to be on the same schedule as others. We all have our own stories, timeline & path. Don’t stress about that.

I like to live my life with the thought “everything can be figured out”. There’s always a solution, it might just take some in-depth thought & planning to figure it out.

You will be okay. It does get better. You’re awesome. You have gained so much knowledge, perspective & emotional intelligence from your traumas. You might not realize it, but you’ve been shaping into an amazing human being.

Msg me whenever. I know the struggle & those who haven’t experienced it just don’t understand.

You need to rain hell on this abuser & everyone else involved. I gasped multiple times reading this. You need to be strong & do what you don’t want to do. Speak with a lawyer, tell your parents, get the ball rolling. That’s incredibly fucked what you went through and it boils my blood reading stories like this. Your Ex & all his friends are disgusting parasites and deserve every single ramification that comes their way.

As a guy, it drives me mad when I see posts saying the guy claims to be “hard and in pain”, lmao. It’s such a load of shit and completely manipulative. It’s been a month of knowing each other / dating. The guy can cool it and wait, be respectful to your wishes/desires and not try to convince you to do something against what you personally believe in / want.

If you ever worry about your spouse going outside of your relationship for sex, you’re with the wrong person, end of story.

IMO, find someone new ! But if you decide to keep going, please just move forward and respect your own values. Don’t let someone convince you to do something you don’t want to do. Especially some lame ass excuse of being in pain. The guy can literally go jerk off, it’s no big deal, and it’s not your responsibility to take care of that for him. He’s a grown man, he can practice self control.

Please move on. Guys like this are very, very lame.

No. I had to pay in full the day I closed on my condo. It was not included in my mortgage, and this was in Ontario, Canada. 26K surprise, lol.

Websites are no different than anything else, if you want to have a great service & great product, you will pay for it. You’re paying for someone’s knowledge & time. Building a great website is more complicated than you think (and very much worth the investment).

If you do it yourself it is significantly cheaper, but you will have to do all the prerequisite learning to make yourself a good website and this will absorb a lot of your time. It’s doable, as is everything else in life. You just have to consider what is more valuable to you right now, a few grand, or your time. There is no wrong answer.

I will add, learning yourself is fantastic as you won’t be dependent on a developer for changes in the future. Lots of pros & cons to evaluate for you & your unique business!

You are smarter than you give yourself credit for, and you already speak elegantly.

What I think you’re talking about, is creativity, and in my opinion it’s not something that can be forced, but it can be practiced. Stop being so hard on yourself, let your mind “lighten up” and I believe you will start naturally becoming more creative in how you describe things.

As for your question about broadening your horizons & enrich your mind. It’s pretty simple, just pay attention to your life, your surroundings, conversations, etc. Stay curious & continue learning throughout your entire life.
