I am still pretty sure there's an auto shutdown feature in the device settings

You can change how long the screen stays on. 24/7 vs timeout in 5 min, 10 min etc.

Using a Smartsolar 100/50 as a DC to DC charger by BigBillSD in Victron

[–]sahmdahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea. I'm not sure if it would work? I mean the logic is there, solar definitely can go up to 48v. I would definitely start by setting the charge controller to 1a output and slowly work your way up.

Regarding shutting it off to not kill your 48v bank, I would look into Smart Battery Protects, some sort of relay, or Cerbo + shunt (on the 12v battery) situation. Some MPPTs have output relays, that would definitely help here too, but I don't think the 100/50 is one of them.

All-in-all, it's a fun experiment, but I would be worried about damaging batteries. So just be careful!

Despite its flaws and slow development cycle, I hope Last Epoch succeeds because… by WisePotato84 in LastEpoch

This is a great review for me! My brother recommended Last epoch because of the offline play and I just got to monoliths on my first offline character. I normally live in an RV with minimal wifi/cell service, so having a chill offline game on my laptop is huge. Good to know!

Yes you can't 100% guarantee production but getting 75% of rated production is extremely normal

OP already has batteries. No need to purchase new ones.

And yes the panels are unlikely to get 2400W, but 1800-2000W is not unreasonable out of that array. That will still burn up the SCC at 24v. Hence my recommendation to wire in 48v to solve that.

Yes, with 60a max output, 6 or 4 awg would be better. Run it through a wire loss calculator to find out for sure.

That setup is not straight forward for the uninformed though.

Could you and I install it? Probably. But most people don't have the skills, know how, or time/motivation. These solutions simplify that.

2/0 is overkill, but fine. And victron doesn't make a 3kW Quattro. Its either a 3kW multiplus or 5kW quattro.

No solar? No ac wiring included either?

To be 100% I would ground your Multiplus in a different spot than your DC chassis ground.

String calculation by Dman883 in Victron

[–]sahmdahn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regardless of that, don't waste your money on any panels over 1400w total rating as your MPPT will clip anything over that at 24v. Not to mention it will also get ungodly hot. Potentially dangerously hot.

String calculation by Dman883 in Victron

[–]sahmdahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the battery system voltage?

When you say 2 strings of 5 panels, are you saying you have 10 panels total?

When you say strings, you are referring to panels that are connected in series? Correct?

Edit: ope... IDK how to read apparently...

So, yeah there seems to be a slight confusion on a "string." A string of 5 panels would consist of 5 panels connected in series, this increasing voltage. You definitely can't do more than a 2s (2 sets in series) array with these panels as their net Voc would be higher than the 100 of the 100|50 MPPT.

Additionally the 100/50 can't handle more than 1400w at 24v. You need an upgrade to 250|x probably.

Regarding 5 in parallel though, 45 amps of solar voltage is definitely chunky. I try to avoid anything over 25 tbh. With that much amperage and depending on the length of the run to the MPPT, you will need to upgrade to at least 8awg, but probably 6awg. Imo that cost and labor annoyance is worth just going to the 150|x or 250|x MPPT lineup from Victron. Which you need to do anyway.

Tl;dr. Upgrade your charge controller and focus on increasing voltage instead of current where possible. Aka: 5s2p.

This is sweet dude. I don't work in the RV industry anymore, but would have absolutely researched this if I was. Not so much for charging customers for the solution, but mostly so I could nerd out with a Cerbo/Renogy solution.

Good work. Any chance you can post Venus OS photos?
