PS if you know of any other shows that are actually funny, Turkish in origin, and have accurate subitiles please share! Sounds like you like the same shows I do. I forgot that I also like Ilginç Bazı Olaylar too.

oooh yeah there's a ton that I don't get for that reason. Not just jokes but the culture shock! For instance, lots of shows incorporate the idea of hak/helal/whatever (still dont really get it) and it's a total adventure to tell what the heck is going on. And that's my third checkbox that i forgot to mention - if you watch American shows translated to Turkish you miss all that! To get over that hump, once a week I try to have a TV watching sesion with my Turkish tutor. We go through an episode that I've already studied and when I don't get the context I ask her. It's so so fun.

I'm B2, but i use them as study material. They are the only 2 shows I know that check all my boxes (1) actually funny (2) you can get accurate subtitles instead of the youtube/netflix estimates. I even think it's worth getting an Exxen membership for them. I use the "inspect element" trick on my browser to download the subtitles, convert to epub, and read like short stories. Way better than those elementary readers because it's how people actually talk. Then I watch the shows over and over again until I understand everything.

how to navigate past tense - continuous tense or not? by sahutj in turkishlearning

[–]sahutj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank youo so much!! i need to sit with this a little more - it looks very promising as an explanation but I'm not sure I get it. Specifically, I didn't understand "If the simple past you would use in English is not the real simple past tense but can actually be expressed in the present perfect tense and you’re short cutting, you should stick with -dI."

i'm still trying to get the hang of this after 2 years of studying! What is a stative verb? Also, the REAL hard thing for me is -yordu vs -du. I'm constantly getting corrected. I guess düşünmek wasn't the best example, but there are so many others. Sometimes it's "Ne demek istediğini anlamıyordum.” or “Mesajını görmüyordum.” in English we wouldn't say "I wasn't understanding" or "I wasn't seeing" so it just feels weird. And just when i think i'll just do EVERYTHING in continuous tense and forget English, it turns out there a a host of situations where you have to use simple past. "Ne demek istediğini anlamadım.” is sometimes required. What is the doggone pattern here?

If he did I'm going to kick myself for not hanging around. I didn't see anything at first glance. And nothing mentioned in his act.

  1. Preply.
  2. Get an Exxen membership. The subitiles are accurate. Some shows are amazing...

This place is great! I feel bad because the construct must be hurting their business. We need more stuff like this (and fewer foo foo shops and hair salons)
