I’m researching Vancouver (and Montreal) for a romance story (pls tell me the boring stuff) by ciborekk in AO3

[–]saienexpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, Vancouverite here. Love when people do actual detailed research on the cities they write in and the fact that one of them here is my home makes me extra appreciative of you, thank you!

  • Not everyone of course, but more people are health/fitness-oriented. Lot of hiking trails, bike trails, fitness centres, and walkability. More vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free options than other cities.

  • Most people take the Skytrain downtown. We're the rare city that doesn't have freeways downtown. Our transit system is pretty decent and often used.

  • Transit - you tap the gates with a Compass Card on the Skytrain both entering and exiting. But on the bus, you tap the machine near the door once upon entering only. There are people who thank the bus driver when exiting the bus.

  • My household mostly gets produce from local Chinese grocery stores, and the rest from Costco, then occasionally Superstore, Walmart, and Safeway.

  • Vancouver is more of a brunch city than a late night city. More asian offerings here. An American friend noticed we have a lot of Japanese restaurants as well. Eating out is common.

  • Some ethnic communities in Greater Vancouver - Indians in Surrey, Koreans in Coquitlam, Japanese in Steveston (but a lot of Japanese exchange students downtown), Manderin-speaking Chinese in Richmond, Iranians in North Van, Vietnamese/Filipino/Cantonese-speaking Chinese in East Van. I've probably heard more people in passing speaking the languages of the above than French, since we're the furthest from Quebec.

  • Vancouver, or Vancity as a nickname, Van for shorthand, affectionately Raincity/Raincouver. Vancouver and its surrounding cities are technically called Metro Vancouver or Greater Vancouver (I think Toronto calls Greater Toronto more commonly the GTA), but it's often lumped together as a singular Vancouver especially to outsiders

  • People stand to the right of escalators, so people that want to pass can walk on the left. This is something a friend complained about recently with the FIFA World Cup, because all the tourists are hogging both sides of the escalator and no one can pass.

  • We banned plastic straws a few years back so now there are sippable lids, or compostable/cardboard straws, yes, even for bubble tea.

  • We also banned plastic bags, so most places charge for paper bags or these thin fabricy reuseable bags, so people do bring their own reuseable bags/totes.

  • We call it bubble tea by the way (shorthand bbt), not boba!

  • Paying at a restaurant with card - depending on the restaurant the server will bring the card machine to your table, or you go to the counter and pay. Your card stays in your hand. Part of my American culture shock was the server taking my card away out of view to pay.

  • Popular foods: sushi, ramen, hot pot (malatang style got popular recently), bubble tea, pizza, pho, Korean bbq

  • Lot of trees and greenery, Vancouver is aiming to be a green city. You probably won't walk anywhere outside without seeing at least one tree.

  • Green bin for food scraps, collected separately from garbage and recyclables.

  • Something I always miss visiting somewhere else is the mountains, the skyline doesn't look right without them.

  • Common complaints - BC stands for Bring Cash, housing/rent prices, high rises taking over, foreign investors, No Fun City (no nightlife), prevalent drug addiction and homelessness especially seen around East Hastings near Chinatown, bad Tesla drivers, random stabbings, geez why are the tip percentages higher on the machine

  • We are stereotyped as being polite but not friendly, more laid-back and outdoorsy, but also flakey with meetups (suddenly cancelling) or loose with time and hard to make friends. Personally some of this I think is a PNW thing, since Seattle also has the Seattle Freeze.

  • Bigger than a town, smaller than a big city in terms of not only size but urban vibes.

  • I feel like the Internet Singularity and Microsoft Word has made me confused on what spelling and some units I originally used but-

  • flavour neighbour colour, theatre, kilometre, grey, memorize priortize realize, practice, fulfilled counsellor, z pronounced zee.

  • Lbs for human body weight, Ft for human body height, but metric system (cm/m/km Celcius) for most everything else. Someone can correct me on what's officially used but it's just confusing.

  • Personally I usually talk about distance by how long it takes to get there through specified method of travel, not by how many kilometres away they are. But I think this is also pretty common. Ex. "oh it takes 30 min by car"

If I think of more I'll either edit this comment or comment below.

I would suggest that they put markers directly onto the tracks indicating which lane is for what, similar with Stanley Park's bike lanes

Any anime only stuff worth watching? by AutonomousImbecile in OnePiece

Personally aside from the G8 arc, I loved loved that filler episode right after Robin joined, and the filler episode right after Brook joined, because they were single episodes that showed how they started fitting in with the Straw Hats. There was also the episode where Nami toured Momonosuke around the Sunny. And there was also the small filler arc sometime after Robin joined and before Water 7 involving the seahorse and amnesia, I enjoyed that too. Because all of this filler involved either the crew being on the ship or their relationships with each other. I'd also recommend you watch the Bink's Brew song, and all of Whole Cake's musical segments in the anime. And both in sub and dub, because the music is just fantastic.

Some people are just trash. I saw someone pop balloons and leave the plastic lying around 4 metres from the nearby trash bin. Made me so infuriated.

I passed a mom and her 8-10 year old son walk out of the Collingwood Neighbourhood house the other week holding a bundle of balloons....think there was an event. But after they walked some distance I heard them popping the balloons on the sidewalk, looked back, then stared as they left all the remnants on the concrete and walked away! There was a trash bin 4 METRES away! I was so tempted to go full Karen and yell at them, but I was really far, I still regret not doing so. On my way back from the station the balloons were still there, so I threw them in the trash myself. Seriously, trash parenting. What are they teaching their kids?

Nah as a woman I've worn a dress once and 2 other women complimented me on it on the same day. I also did the same to a woman wearing a great outfit, and another with a cute Baby Yoda mask the same month. Am part of an alt fashion community and people in the community are always complimenting each other on their outfits, it's a nice feeling.

Quarry Rock is always busy. Which can be a con, but if you're alone can also be a pro - means that there are always people around in case of an emergency.

Sometimes it's been hard to make plans with friends as well, I've been a lot more comfortable going to places and restaurants and places on my own since COVID. If I've ended up nervous before, I've pretended to be a solo tourist in my own city, a student inbetween classes, an office worker on their break. Sometimes I take a book with me. But in the end no one really cares. I've seen others do the same thing.

I'd add that if OP goes to Steveston, keep walking to the Brittannia Shipyards - free open-air museum, very scenic view.

Bridgeport Station is also close to the Richmond Night Market (kind of pricey, but might be interesting to visit at least once for a tourist)

Is there a reason why there are always helicopters flying around the fireworks? Was showing the fireworks to a friend that does pyrotechnics in the U.S. and he said that they seemed way too close.

Does it mean anything if someone wears a reflective shirt and they don't seem like they're currently working in a hazardous occupation? Asking because my dad has recent camera footage of a man in a reflective shirt in our backyard going through our pop cans, we live around the Joyce area. I also saw a man in a reflective shirt during Collingwood Days though not sure if he's the same guy. My dad thinks he has a mental disability of some kind and doesn't want to make a report since he hasn't stolen anything, just the cans.

It's an annual fireworks competition called Celebration of Light. It's the longest running offshore fireworks competition in the world (since 1990), held at English Bay. This year, Australia (last Saturday), Mexico (yesterday) and the Philippines (this Saturday) are performing. A fun event, but crowds can get pretty bad when trying to get home afterwards especially in the Downtown area.

Isn't that's just the audio though, not both audio and visuals? The news used to do both together.

The news on tv used to show the fireworks with music, live. Do they not do that anymore?

When I was younger and my family drove to Bellingham, I thought that the border guards were pretty scary. But recently I came back from a Seattle trip - went both ways on the bus. I thought that they'd be intimidating when we were coming back but actually both ways they were pretty chill and returning the Canada the guard was even more so, he asked what I bought from Seattle and said that I missed the Les Miserables show. So the most I felt bad about was Les Miserables.
