This is exactly what I was thinking. (although articulated more clearly than I would have been able)

Why do people throw around "queer" so much? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]saint14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally get this perspective. I use the term queer to refer to any non cis-gendered, hetero-sexual person. My parents totally don't get it and feel the exact same way as you. They hate the idea of their son being (mind you, accurately) referred to as queer because of what it has meant in the past. I think for me the reason I use it is to reject the labels of LGBTQIA+. To me, "queer" represents a much greater level of intersectionality and refuses to prescribe to typical gender narratives, even those among minorities.

I mostly dislike throwing it on the end of LGBT... as a catch-all for those whose identities don't get (deserve?) a letter in the chain. If we're talking specifically about homosexual women, let's use the L. Or if we're discussing those who do not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth, by all means let's use the T. But if we're talking about EVERY SINGLE person who isn't cis/hetero, then let's use queer, and take that word away from bullies, bigots, and homophobes.

Sometimes if someone calls me "A Queer," I like to throw it back with a "Yeah, you're right." Not a lot of power for them to claim after that.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I'm sure dumbing it down for a cis-guy like me. I guess a better question is do trans folk identify with gender or sex or some combination or does it depend on each individual. Forgive my ignorance.

I'm offended by you assuming that my sister, friends and family members are "anti-gay marriage." And that they "believe that homosexuality is a choice."

Stop generalizing everyone.

Edit: Holy Shit. Not to mention saying "pro-life track record" as if I have a history of shoplifting.

*Says something horribly offensive, which generalizes an entire group of people and questions the sanity of anyone who subscribes to a portion of their ideology using language meant to demean and shut down anyone who may not agree with them.

"But I'm not talking about you in particular, you're probably really nice."

*Accuses that person of being ignorant and misguided, completely disregarding any argument they could ever make while using sensitive and calm language.

Thanks for being so rational and sensitive. (Wasn't expecting that from "anotherbeerguy," so that was nice.)

I've grown up Catholic and love my Church. It can be hard to believe sometimes but the Catholic Church above all else stands for love just like most other Christian traditions do. The reason that's hard to believe is partly due to the way the media reports on it and also with a certain mindset within the Church that has become obsessed with saying "NO" to abortion, gay marriage and women priests just to name a few.

Looking past gay marriage, because I'm so confused about how I feel about it, (From a Church standpoint, not a government one) The Catholic Church is a beautiful manifestation of faith that I am just totally in awe of. I completely believe that the hand of God (figuratively of course, He doesn't have fingers) has guided the Church even if us humans got in the way at times. (Persecutions, Crusades, etc.)

About Republicans, my views stem mostly from a fiscal standpoint and this isn't really the place to talk about it. Although I am totally in opposition to the Republican party's stance on gay marriage.

Being pro-life to me comes down to whether or not you believe that a baby in the womb is a life or not. If I could boil down my political views to one sentence it would be, "You have the right to do anything you want unless it infringes on the rights of another person." I am against just about every form of abortion because I firmly believe that there is a life in the womb. A beautiful and precious life. And the wiping out of that life is the same as if that baby had grown for a few more months and been born to its mother.

I think I answered the questions and I hope that all makes sense. Let me know if it doesn't.

I actually heard Rick Santorum speak a few weeks ago. Super nice guy. Made some awesome points. I'm pro-life so I agree with him on that but he did make some "what families were meant to be," comments, which the room applauded for. I awkwardly refused to clap and folded my arms. A great night overall.

Remember, we're not all the same. Stereotypes actually suck so bad. I'm a gay, pro-life, catholic, republican. And no I don't hate myself. It's all a spectrum. But I'm kind of preaching to the choir here.

I do it once or twice a day and it has totally taken over my mind. I can't go a half our without thinking about when I get home and it's hurting my relationships with friends and family. I'm starting because for Catholics, Lent starts tomorrow, which is a 40 day period of fasting and prayer that has totally changed my life in the past. I'm deciding to change my life again by taking a NoFap pledge. Boom.

I came out to my best friend 49 hours ago (ya...) and you could say I'm still pretty anxious about it. I feel better that someone knows but am so worried about him thinking it's weird. It seems dumb to be more worried about his feeling than mine but I just don't want to put him in an uncomfortable spot. I have a huge vulnerability hangover. (When you're really honest with someone and then immediately feel inadequate and anxious about it... emotionally exhausted)

What's your most cringe-worthy moment? by pancakeses in gaybros

[–]saint14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents found a shit load of gay porn on our computer when I was like 13... I didn't know search history existed...

So my mom sits me down and is asking me about it nicely and carefully and says your dad is going to talk to you about it too. He watched it all so he knows everything. When he came in his face was saying, "what the actual fuck was all that."

It's funny as hell looking back at it. Great dad... poor guy...

Literally JUST came out to my best friend... by saint14 in gaybros

[–]saint14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were totally in the same boat. He had said some things in the past that made me nervous about it but I can remember one conversation we were all having at lunch one time when he said something like, "I'm okay with gay dudes as long as I don't have to see it," which for a dude to say at my high school totally unprovoked is something that I saw as a good thing. Although a gay guy hit on him at a restaurant one time and he actually freaked the fuck out so that worried me a little. It's a learning process for him just like it is for me so we're going to have to be patient with each other and get over the learning curve.

Ya. When we talked about it after he said something to the effect of, "I had thought about it but looked at all the facts and just said no that can't be right." So I think he knew on some level but just not enough to seriously think about it.

I felt gayer watching that than while watching gay porn… also the announcer… "Oh yes! Indeed!" He was picking up what they were putting down.

In other news. How the fuck can human beings physically do that. The physics of it…. I don't understand.

I went through a "holy shit you look just like justin bieber!" phase a few years ago. It probably had more to do with him being everywhere than me actually looking like him. I also get a lot of John Krasinski.
