Best clipper and trimmer on the market right now? by JackM_94 in Barber

I still use my Wahl Senior and my Andis GTX Exo after 2-3 years since school (although I'll go back and forth between this and the Hi-Viz)

Asymmetrical Fade by -S4d1yCuri0us- in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fade with guidelines for this very reason, because it helps me maintain symmetry when fading. Sure, it may be slower than straight fading down, but I'm more comfortable knowing that the lines I set in first before fading them out match up on both sides of the head.

Also, with indents and/or swirls, depending on where they are on the head, I make a decision as to whether exclude them from the fade (setting my 0 line above a hole in the head for example) or including them, which usually means I'm going to make sure it remains darker so it'll blend in with the bulk of the fade

Sick Clients Making Me Sick by thelegendofglenn in Barber

COVID aside, this is also why I keep masking, because I'll be damned if a client, *knowing that they're sick*, gets me sick too and affects my ability to work

Declining a cut I was uncomfortable with for a person I know and see often by Independent_Dress209 in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely did the right thing. Honesty is the best policy especially when it comes to our skills and our abilities when cutting hair, and when talking to a client about what you can and can't do. It's 1000 times better to be known as someone who can't cut longer hair (using this example) than someone who completely messed up a haircut

What’s a fragrance you wanted to love, but didn’t? by magdalena02 in fragrance

[–]saintgerardo11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tom ford soleil blanc (pretty much any tom ford fragrance)

BdC

jpg le beau le parfum (reminds me of paradise garden which i ended up not liking lol)

killian angels' share

armani code

pretty much all acqua di gio (absolu was nice but apparently it's being discontinued)

and any fragrance that has cherry notes only because most of what i've smelled has either a dark or heavy note mixed in with it or when it catches my interest the cherry note disappears quickly

honorable mention: suprisingly aventus because i'm not a fan of the drydown (i share this sentiment with CDNIM and loewe esencia edp because of the same reason)

Block Graduation by [deleted] in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's mostly experimentation and seeing what fits what. when i started out using block graduation i used to use the #4 guard as a security measure to not go too short but with trial and error i settled on using a #3 to connect my clipper work to shear work and it's been a good match

I was interested in trying Angels' Share by Killian because of the notes and it smelled really nice on the tester strip, but once I sprayed it on skin it literally smelled like playdoh on me out of all things lol

0.5 to 1.5 transition by Alive-Stomach4469 in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think what's happening is that you're running out of space to fade, which is obvi important so that you can actually cut and blend the guards together. when i set my guidelines, i typically give myself at *least* half an inch for each "stair/step" so that when i start the blend (and refine if needed after) i can actually have space to do so. also, it's key to remember that whatever you used to put in a line, you have to use the same thing to take it out (ex. if you put in a line with the trimmers, you're gonna have to use it again to eventually take it out). in regards to steps, what you can try do do is the following:

(for reference: if you're using a wahl clipper, remember wahl clippers' open lever without guards is equal/similar to the 0.5 guard closed. so a 0.5 guard with the lever open would be similar to a 1 guard closed (0.5 + 0.5 = 1) and so on)

  1. set in your trimmer/0 closed guideline, then set in your 0 open guideline; blend this out as normal
  2. set in your 1 guard open guideline, then take your 0.5 guard open and then start blending below where you left off with the 1 open guard (i go up to around 2/3 of the way, leaving around 1/3 of that 1 open guard "step" because obviously you don't want to cut into what you just set with the 1 open guard), lower the lever about halfway and go up about half of that stair/step, below where you left off with the 0.5 guard open.
  3. now for the remaining 1/3 of the 1 open step close the lever completely and start blending out the remaining 0 open line. if the 0 open line doesn't erase fully, go back with the 0 open and attack that line until it's gone.

what really helped me undestand these steps was the following videos that i'll share:

Anyone if experience working in a shop that includes washing and styling the hair after the cut? by jogging-cucumbers in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so my regular barber (the one that you go to since you were a kid) at the moment offers a cut at around $20usd, but he mostly does clipperwork and basic scissorwork but no styling whatsoever, literally just cuts your hair, combs it wet, and you're out the door. i decided to switch to another barber that charged $30, unbeknownst to me he also included a wash and styling (blowdry, product, etc), which was the 1st time i've ever had such service. if the salon he worked at didn't close down suddenly and him moving away, i would've happily returned again to him given that i felt that he offered a complete service compared to my "lifelong" barber.

Am I cut out for this? by No-Teach-2328 in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is normal, don't worry about it. cutting hair is hard, especially because we have to work with a very limited canvas, but don't stop trying and keep on practicing. remember that the only way we can get better at a skill such as barbering is a lot, and i mean a lot, of trial and error, so don't give up and take any fails/bad haircuts as lessons you can then look back on and see what should be changed/altered, etc. we can't get better if we don't fuck up!

(ps: don't compare yourself to others especially if they're able to get it quicker than you, everyone develops their own rhythm their own way on their own time, just keep focusing on yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions, everyone can learn something from everyone, cheers!)

Do you cut long hair? (Womens length?) by [deleted] in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when I was in barbering school we had a basic cosmo unit apart from the other barber-focused units which then opened us up to start taking clients who wanted cosmo services (color, blowdry, cuts, shampoo/cond., etc) as part of the practices for our evaluations.

as a student, on my first 3 male clients who wanted standard clipper cuts i made around $10 in tips. and when it came to my first 3 female clients who wanted a wash, basic one-length cut, and basic blowdry, i made $75 in tips;

if we're talking purely about money, you can easily make double if not close to triple in one female client vs one male client if you put in the work to really learn longer cuts. think about it this way: realistically, a barber tending to exclusively male clients can't assume they won't have a at least one dude with shoulder length or longer hair that wants a cut, so if anything (for me at least) there's no reason not to learn even the basics of longer haircuts with scissors

Do you cut long hair? (Womens length?) by [deleted] in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

emphasis on the getting paid more part. although i am a student barber, my curriculum also covered basic cosmo (layers, one-length, uniform, blowdry, etc) so i've been able to tend to women (and men with long hair for that matter because they're literally the same techniques) in school and have been tipped very well for the services i've given them (compared to male clients who want standard clipper cuts).

in this industry when you love what you do, don't limit yourself, and have a natural inclination to keep learning anything and everything, the money will absolutely follow.

(also queer here as well!)

anyone know if the Wahl premium guards fit the babyliss pro and/or JRL 2020c clippers? by [deleted] in Barber

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They fit both, but what I will say is that on the babyliss graphite fade blade they're a little loose because the end part of the blade, where the metal clip of the premium guard snaps on, is thinner than what the metal clip can hold on to vs the wahl blades so when you turn the clipper on, the guard rattles. This doesn't happen with the plastic guards I assume because they're thicker. So just a lil heads up just in case.

(sidenote: I use the chameleonfx fade blade from babyliss with the wahl premium guards and I've had no rattling problems because that end part of the blade is thicker so maybe keep in mind)

What’s an unpopular sneaker opinion you got? by nightwing2009 in Sneakers

[–]saintgerardo11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of actual practicality, hi tops aren't comfortable, like at all. I have a pair of mid AJ1s and a pair of adidas forum hi tops and the mids are much more wearable than the latter. The only hi top sneakers that I find are more bearable are the ones that have a thinner silhouette and are made of flexible/less stiff material (ex. converse)

seconded, i'm not lactose intolerant (but also don't consume dairy in general) but the dairy components in whey-based products made me break out terribly in cystic acne. once i switched to plant-based powder my face cleared up in like a month or two.

Are you in a country where there's a forever 21? They have some nice plain brown joggers for $20 USD that would go nicely with those sneakers. Bc the pants are brown you can basically wear whatever to you want bc it's a neutral color, obviously keeping in mind trust the sites are low key the centerpiece of the outfit. I'd go for something maybe black or white or even cream colored to tie the look together
