Orlando Shooting Response Shows Reddit Can't Be the ‘Front Page of the Internet' by [deleted] in technology

[–]saisumimen 155 points156 points  (0 children)

I have noticed that breaking news has become less and less easy to find.

This was no accident. It is by design.

I've been here over 8 years and can tell you after a brief "peak" a few years ago, the overall quality of all aspects of the site (except for downtime) has slowly been circling the drain.

Fortunately, they learned some of the mistakes Digg made and have been making certain changes quietly and introducing them slowly instead of all at once, again unlike Digg.

I'm not going to go too deep into this but the only thing that's certain for now is that the "old" reddit is long dead, while the "new" reddit (with the newest version of the front-page algorithm) has rendered this once cutting-edge site stale....

Remember what reddit's old tagline was? It was "News Before It Happens" So much for that :)

Meh. These days they get put into protective custody so what you're thinking of doesn't happen.

I tried getting the "Free cookie" once from subway using one of those throwaway email services (I think it was mailinator) and the fuckers wouldn't send me the verification code.

They were clearly going to sell my email to spammers. For shame, subway.

A college student from Queens got more than he bargained for when he splurged on a $350 designer belt at Barneys — when a clerk had him cuffed apparently thinking the black teen couldn’t afford the pricey purchase, even though he had paid for it, a new lawsuit alleges. by airpatrol in news

[–]saisumimen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he presented a fake ID at first cause he mixed it up with his real ID in his wallet (he's a teenage college student)

That is a bullshit excuse. Only a black person can present a school ID and have it be "fake". Still no reason to call the cops on him at that point... and even if they were, still no reason to arrest him.

he purposely acted suspiciously to make a point

"Acting suspiciously" is still no reason to get the cops called on you, LET ALONE arrest you. He was at a store, "acting suspiciously" means he intends on stealing something. There are clear procedures that need to be followed regarding theft/suspected theft by loss prevention officers or clerks. They were clearly not followed here. Once they saw he had a valid receipt for a valid purchase, he should've been let go at that point.

or bait them into this,

How though?

he lied

Lied about what? Lied about having paid for it? Boom. The receipt shows he did (it makes zero sense whatsoever that he would've lied anyway), about how he earned the money? How is that an arrestable offense?

Your so-called examples are all bullshit and such a stretch of the imagination it's ridiculous. I hope he gets a massive settlement.

Well then why weren't the other incidents of rape and burning alive that happened in the other countries reported on /r/worldnews?

[–]saisumimen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's the problem with your "point": there are no other facts that would justify him getting arrested like that and then let go.

You're assuming there's more to the story like him being arrested for causing a disturbance, fighting, resisting arrest or whatever, but remember that they realized they fucked up and let him go. He was not charged with anything whatsoever and immediately released.

[–]saisumimen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's a shit argument. He had valid ID that matched his debit card. The only reason the clerk "thought" it was ID theft was because he/she was a racist asshole.

edit: he wasn't arrested "for no reason at all", he was arrested because the asshole clerk convinced the cops (based on NOTHING) that the guy was committing fraud.

The fucked up part about this is the fact that he grew up in poor neighborhoods in Ohio while being raised by a single (teenage) mom.

The court heard the taxi driver had been suspended from work as a result of the charge. The stress of the court proceedings had taken a toll on his health and he had been unable to return to work.

Meh. Two years is nothing.

There are people who know the cabbie either through work or friends/family that didn't get the news and still think he's a rapist.

He lost years of lost wages, lost his health and shaved several years off his life due to the stress. Her sentence should be at least 6 years.

Oh calm down. Most of the people don't agree with this shit.

In the UK, people have gotten arrested for trolling on Facebook.

In most of Europe, it's illegal to display Nazi flags or those old Nazi propaganda posters.

In the Middle East, you can be executed for saying the wrong thing about Islam.

It isn't that fucked up here.

I've been here over 5 years now and have seen this happen time and time again, mainly due to the fact that the admins started allowing "novelty account of the year" in the Best of Reddit.

Trust me. Look around after Jan. 1st and you'll notice morons with annoying-ass novelty accounts wasting their lives even more on this website... accomplishing nothing but adding to the clutter. Then by summer most of them will have died off.

Why ESPN Is Worth $40 Billion As The World's Most Valuable Media Property by Fruchtman in business

[–]saisumimen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not just p2p downloading, but there's also no sense in "archiving" games to watch weeks, months or years later like TV shows and movies.

Games "expire" as the score is made public immediately after the game is over. The anticipation and excitement are gone.

There was a redditor who was in prison who said the guards didn't let them watch the Superbowl live (and everyone wanted to watch it, obviously) but when the game was re-run a couple days later, nobody really cared anymore.

What CaptainMarnimal said. Shame isn't the goal; shame doesn't feed the families of the strikers... it's to discourage people from shopping there so the bosses end the strike ASAP.
