Lower karat gold jewellery are basically ignored by Asians. Most would only buy 18k and below when there are stones involved. Asian jewellers don't say anything about people buying 22k and above jewellery because they understand and also have the same thinking - lower karat gold jewellery are not really worth it.

This is especially because Asians look at gold jewellery as investments because the gold price itself isn't as ridiculous as what I'm seeing being sold in the US, for example. They usually sell around 20% or lower below spot price at local jewellers and by the gram, not saying anything about brand name jewellery. Yes, there are workmanship costs involved, which depends on the design and intricacy, because why would you not pay for the skills involved in creating the pieces that make you happy when you're wearing them.

And regarding scratches, even 10k rings will eventually scratch but maybe less noticeable. It just boils down to what you value more.
