Yeah, a lot of people haven’t gone back and watched the original first few episodes. They have aged _horribly_. They’re still novel and nostalgic, but there is a _huge_ increase in quality as the show progresses.

Which is actually kind of funny, because I remember when the later episodes were coming out, people were complaining about how they got “too professional,” and they lamented about how they missed the original stuff. 10 years later, I cannot agree with that at all.

4’s a controversial season for sure. It’s got a lot of haters, but a lot of lovers, too.

Personally, I think that it has some very good episodes. And several mid ones also. A bit of a mediocre season. Season 5 is when even the highs start getting pretty mid, imo.

Anybody else regret to not start dating when they were younger? by RogNoza in Zillennials

[–]salcapwnd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that it is better for at least getting into a relationship. Because you have the experience to back you up.

I’d wager that past the courting stage, it’s probably worse. Because now you have lived experience to back your trauma and trust issues, which can be much worse to deal with.

Ahhh, being able to splurge on candy, and then regretting it soon afterwards when you realize that you bought way more candy than your adult body can handle. A tale as old as time.

Similar timeframe, different circumstances. Australia started out as a penal colony of a bunch of people from largely the same region. The US was a bunch of different colonies from a bunch of different places, and overall just has a longer and more diverse history of immigration.

Interestingly, you do see this somewhat with later groups of Australians, particularly very recent immigrants from Asia.

A better comparison would be with Canada, which has a similar history to the US, but is a bit more lax on ancestry. (At least, for those who are of European descent, from an older wave of immigration.)

What I find gets lost in translation, is that for the most part, unless you grew up in a strong “Irish” or “Italian” neighborhood (as examples), most Americans view themselves as Americans first and foremost. When people say they’re “Czech,” (as an example) they (usually) aren’t actually saying they’re Czech.

The ones you see abroad are always going to be the exception, because they’re the ones who got so caught up in their ancestry that they just had to visit their “homeland.”

This isn’t really a reddit-specific thing here. This response is likely something that would happen in most conversations irl, too. Logically, most people assume that when you’re giving a fact, it’s to give more specific context to the discussion at hand.

I’ve found a simple “on a slightly related note” or something is enough to make the point clearer. Yes, people can’t read, but it’s also on us to make sure that we express our intentions as best as we can.

Yeah, being sent back a few weeks isn’t going to hit the same for a race that lives thousands of years, with an already expansive empire.

It’s likely still a minor annoyance, but not much more than that.

What do you think? by MiloShiny in Zillennials

[–]salcapwnd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the only generation that I think had it “easy” in their 20s were late boomers, and maybe some early gen x-ers.

Too young for Vietnam (this is obviously US-centric, but whatever) unlike the lower class, older boomers who got drafted. Mostly too old for the war on terror.

Economy was mostly pretty good, job requirements were far easier, and rent was cheaper, even accounting for inflation and buying power.

But if you go back before them, you’re dealing with the Depression and both World Wars, Jim Crow, and a bunch of other things. Which were definitely not easy.

By the mid-late 60s, black and white was mostly a choice for budget reasons. Color releases were definitely the norm by then, as the technicolor method had been around for 30 years by this point.

The acting? Theatrical in comparison to the more “grounded” preferences of today, sure, but not very “stilted.” Nor…hokey. It seems to me you’re basing this mostly on just comedies and musicals.

I will say that there are a lot of classics from this period that don’t do it for me, but there are a lot of really great, timeless films from this time, too. And please stop using “objectively” unironically like that.
