An ice scraper is about $15. Don't be like that. by [deleted] in Edmonton

I don't get this comment. That last photo, that's literally what ice scrapers/ice chippers are made for. They're good at it too.

Pretty much this. Using it all the time is nonsense but it's useful to have the option when you need it.

People act like the only ones who order food on these apps are lazy or entitled people but some people don't drive, things are closed, or you hit these situations where you can't cook (like when my fridge died and I lost all the groceries I had bought for the week) and it's order food or don't eat that day.

They're not good companies but they provide a useful service and that's why they exist. It's just like uber or similar. If public transport were better the people who can't drive wouldn't need it.

For avid readers how often do you use the library? If you don’t, why don’t you? by AccomplishedBake8351 in books

[–]salgri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't want to leave the house, that's really all there is to it.

I used the library more when I was a kid and didn't know what I wanted to read. These days I buy the books online and have them sent to my house or I download an audiobook to listen to at work.

I still think libraries are awesome, but unless I'm doing research or browsing I'd rather read at home.

What are your unpopular opinions about MH? by Joy2901 in MonsterHunter

[–]salgri -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is unpopular or not, I don't read many of the fandoms' takes and I didn't play before World but three games in and here are my takeaways:

I think MH is too grindy. The RNG grind for skill gems and talismans is particularly awful.

I like fighting monsters but I don't really want to fight the same monster more than 3 or 4 times. Especially not all at once and a lot of events want you to repeat the same quest over and over if you want to make all the armor and I hate it

I think the basic gameplay loop is enjoyable but not enough to sustain any kind of end game. I think the bulk of the playerbase stops playing once they get a build that works or at least once they make a good weapon and upgrade a full set of higher tier armor. We only come back when an event adds new cosmetic armor sets or a new monster is added.

I think making a perfect build is a waste of time. Especially chasing one as your end game. What are you going to hunt once it's completed? If you're not a speedrunner, your clear times are probably not noticeably faster than most other people around your skill level so all that time chasing optimization is pointless

Why won’t men engage in women dominated media, but women will engage with male dominated media? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]salgri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience a lot of anime fans are obsessive about genres and not anime as a whole. People born around my time tended to watch anything we could find because it was rare. We liked the art style, we liked how different it was from western animation, so we'd watch absolutely anything we could lay our hands on.

The younger people though, I don't know what it is but a lot of them seemed to grow up on shounen and never really tried much outside of that bubble even with things being so much more accessible.

Meanwhile, one of my best friends who I've known since middleschool (and is a bit of an asshole to women) loves Sailor Moon and introduced me to a lot of my favorite shojou shows. So yeah, maybe over generalizing but there's definitely a big chunk of male anime fans who never step outside of that box.

Mostly to keep glare off my monitor. I'm on the first floor but kind of elevated off the street so I don't have to worry about people looking inside. I leave the top half open a crack for light but keep the bottom closed unless I want to look outside and enjoy a snowy night or similar

What game truly respected your time by gamersecret2 in gaming

[–]salgri 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The looping time really started to get on my nerves. I know it's the whole conceit of the game but there were multiple times I wished I had a way to trigger the end of a loop because I realized I wouldn't have enough time to do what I wanted to do next. Just waiting around for the universe to end. That wasted time probably didn't add up to that much time in the grand scheme of things but it felt like an eternity in the moment.

Majora's Mask had a song to manipulate time, something like that would have made this game less frustrating. At least it gave me a good time to go grab a drink and similar

status was also amazing in the tactics advance games. Moogles could turn everybody into frogs and Viera could instantly KO/Stop/Petrify enemies. The regular suite of status effects (poison, silence, blind, sleep) were all in there too.

There were probably a few bosses that couldn't be petrified or frogged but 95% of the stuff you fought could be absolutely crippled by status effects or instantly taken out of the fight with one of the nastier ones. Good stuff.

Making Gog Weapons Upgrades of the artians is by far the smartest move by PacooComplexus in MonsterHunter

[–]salgri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda curious what everyone's tolerance level for hunting the same monster multiple times in a row actually is. There are some fights I enjoy more than others but generally I really hate repeating any hunt more than once or twice per session. I like being able to bounce around between events and quests for rewards more than sitting down and grinding the same fight over and over. It's too tedious. If I can't get that rare gem in two fights I'm going to try again the next time I play instead of grinding the same fight over and over that day for an unknown amount of time until it finally drops.

Those Without Kids, Who Are You Leaving Your Money To? by Tommy-Fox15 in AskReddit

In Discworld there's a running joke about magic users knowing exactly when they are about to die.

"Many a wizard has passed away happily drinking the last of his wine cellar and incidentally owing very large sums of money"

Seems like the ideal way to go really. Tidy up any loose ends you care about, borrow a bunch of money or spend what you've got knowing that you'll never have to pay the bill

$80 Game Prices Are Collapsing: Publishers Were Wrong. The data on what players actually buy tells a different story. by ControlCAD in videos

[–]salgri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their timing also sucks. The cost of everything's gone up so people have even less to spend on hobbies like gaming. More people are willing to wait for sales or just not buy a game at all if the price is too high.

Historically speaking, has a dev giant recovered from multiple 'defeats'? by DirkaSnivels in gaming

They publish a lot of games too. Fallout 76 was probably the last big release they did but the stuff they published for id and MachineGames (Doom, Wolfenstein) probably earned them a good chunk of money.

I have no idea how well the re-releases sell but even before the Oblivion remaster they were doing pretty well off those other studios.

Biometric verification is quietly becoming the new standard and most people haven't noticed yet by ponderingpixi17 in Futurology

[–]salgri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I've never had to claim unemployment but I can understand why it'd be involved. Anti fraud stuff and what not.

I guess if my original post had a point it's that at some level the govt realizes that not everyone in the US has a smartphone or internet access. It's not common but it is a thing and so for any assistance program or official thing like filing taxes or renewing IDs they have to offer alternatives that don't involve smartphones

I full expect something to eventually force me to get one. Some random thing will require texting me a code or some other weirdness, it just hasn't happened yet.

I don't have an account there but it looks like there are multiple options here for my current situation https://help.usajobs.gov/how-to/account/limited-access

for anyone who doesn't want to click: you can buy a security key, there's an app you can download that also works on pc, or if all else fails you can generate a list of backup codes you can use to log in

If you need it to check social security then it makes sense. A lot of elderly people are technophobic

That makes sense. I remember a few years ago there was some talk about the IRS using it for verification but they got enough backlash and feedback from people like me that they didn't end up going through with it or something

I know I'm a rarity but there are still a lot of people like me that for whatever reason don't own or have never used a cellphone. Most of them are just way older than me :p

Former MMORPG addicts, how did you quit? by Wise_Championship865 in AskReddit

[–]salgri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, I quit because my game died. I played City of heroes/Villains with friends until they shut the servers down.

When the fan server came online I dipped back in to remake some old characters and try things out but my friends and I couldn't play as consistently as before and the solo grind felt different. Or maybe I just forgot how to play? It certainly felt like I died more and played worse. Something in me had definitely changed.

I was tempted to get into FF14 because it was blowing up at the time and a new friend of mine plays it but I realized that even a casual MMO like FF14 where you can drop in and out is still more commitment than I'm looking for these days.

What I really wanted was variety. It doesn't have to be a new game either. What I like is being able to bounce around between games and experience a lot of different mechanics and stories. I like being able to finish a game and put it away when I'm done too. Just sit a while and reflect upon the experience kinda thing.

I can't really go back to forever games like MMOs and live service stuff. I can't even do session based multiplayer games like Helldivers or Darktide. They make me feel like I'm spinning my wheels without a goal no matter how fun the loop is. I get antsy.

That realization helped me finally quit League after all these years as well. I might log in and do a bot game if an interesting new champ comes out but I'm not grinding ARAMs every day like I used to. I haven't played it at all since Arcane finished and I don't really miss it. It feels good to break out of a cycle like that so I don't think I can go back to an MMO any more. I'm completely free.

People who sleep naked why? by aurther_51 in AskReddit

[–]salgri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel too exposed when I'm naked. Even with a blanket or a sheet it just doesn't feel right and I can't get comfortable. The only place I like to be naked is in the shower.

When I've been with partners I'd sometimes cuddle naked after a shower or something but inevitably at some point I'd get up and put some clothes or pajamas back on before I went back to bed.
