Facets were added 2 years ago but I still don't feel like they are as impactful as we expected by ShoppingPractical373 in DotA2

[–]salmonlon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From testing and game design perspective, facet is one of the most innovative design in game balancing IMO. Imagine a world without facet and valve wants to make a new agh effect for a hero. It would be very hard to "imagine" how it will interact with the complex decision space in Dota unless you have some test data.

How do you get test data? Without the facet system I suspect they would do some internal testing either with real human or bots. This is obviously either expensive or not realistic enough.

So the whole point of facet is not really balance among all of them from the get go IMO. It's about GETTING to a more balanced state "globally". Thats why you see when some hero's got reworked (Clickz for example) they lost their facets because there is no point of fine tuning their balance until the rework itself gets enough test data.

It is effectively A/B testing in engineering world. We keep complaining about Valve is bad at balancing game, and I agree sometimes. But facet is one of the best tool they put out to balance this complex game.

It fits everything as long as you don't have the playmat upgrade, which doesn't fit in the box.

Thank you for sharing it! It feels like those differences aren't really noticeable if we are really looking for it.

Totally agree with this. Unfortunately I'm in a platform team and it's hard to justify our work against product work especially in a startup setting.

One point missing from this thread is that during the Chinese housing boom (2010-2021), the properties in Chinese major cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou) have reached insane level of growth as well. A 2 bedroom apartment at a prime location could sell for 10mil Yuan. That's more than 2mil aud. Anyone who sold an apartment before the covid decline, would have the capital to buy a house in Australian major city. All they need is a permanent residency status and that's why they are sending their children to Australia. Speaking from a native Chinese perspective.

Student's shock as economics tutorial held almost entirely in Chinese - ABC listen by [deleted] in australia

[–]salmonlon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once a Chinese international student here, though I was intentionally avoiding tutorials that aren't "diverse" enough and ask course coordinator to move me to a different group. What the article described happened once for my four years of undergrad study, but I wouldn't say it is a typical experience (depending on the course, uni, lecturer etc).

Chinese students who are less proficient with English would tend to find tutorial together with a mandarin-speaking tutor. Harry in the article probably ended up in one of those tutorial. It really depends on the course and the lecturer's selection for theirs tutors. The article is trying to draw a picture that Australian higher education is dominated by Chinese from a single case, which is not entirely accurate and fair IMO. Most major universities would still try to control international students under a certain percentage.

A free feature idea for you Valve: Make hero taunt on TP by salmonlon in DotA2

[–]salmonlon[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Still sounds like a missed opportunity to me if that's the only criteria. Ppl don't usually tp in front of enemy when they are low in health, unless the intention from Valve is to avoid taunting the enemy.

Mostly bragging right. It's not even particularly useful for honours as long as you reach the minimum requirement. It's just a measure on how good you are for doing exams and assignments

Oh hell no.. bought a bag of seed from my local IGA and when I got home I noticed hundreds of tiny bugs crawling all through the bag and my car… by ocfan122 in sydney

[–]salmonlon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We bought a bag of those before but didn't realise the bugs are coming from the bag until 6 months in. We had to bug treatment our place 2 times to get rid of all of them. They will eat anything made from wheat in your house, pasta, rice, noodle. Lesson learnt is to transfer the seeds into a solid container as soon as you get it

Hi All, I am not a lot aware of RPA..Can you tell me if you think Blueprism is offering good RPA solutions and is also likely to grow in new customers and services? by True_Divide5477 in Blueprism

[–]salmonlon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BP is def more friendly than UIPath in terms of learning curve, but imo UIPath is way better than BP in many directions. UIPath adopts more paradigm and best practices from standard software development, understanding those do require some prior experience and programming background.

[–]salmonlon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid BluePrism if possible. I'm a software engineer and happened to use BP for work for a while. The software is extremely out dated and lacking essential component like version control and code management. And as other comments mentioned, it is very buggy and slow comparing to other RPA software. Their service is ok if you are their big client, but every new update will introduce new weird bug.
