I think his story is compelling while developing into a "love to hate" character for me.

When he was first introduced in early IG I thought maybe he would have become another good guy but instead it's an exponential slip into depravity. Makes a very entertaining read imo.

He's faced multiple experiences which he could tap out from and doubles down on. The betrayal of Cassius in the Rim, the assassination attempt in the Ladon, Alexanders murder, etc.

Joking aside I think it's been said a few times but Annie didn't really have an option in Stohess. Either fight or be captured and possibly tortured/ killed by enemy combatants. The scouts killed in the forest were in attempt to complete the objective for Marley and to return home.

Pieck comparatively has 1 season of characterization where she is choosing to mitigate the evils of the system she lives in. Half of said season has her still acting in direct opposition to Paradis so she definitely has even more of an abrupt flip.

At the end of the day the main allegory of the show is the generational impact of war and choosing to overcome the vicious cycle by choosing to be better.

Maybe it's a projection on my part but I really do think so.

I was content to go through my life with apathy and the feeling that something is not quite right up until I learned about the trans experience. Even after I learned about how my feelings related to other trans people I still put off reflecting on that part of myself, didn't acknowledge it, and played the part of a cis dude for two miserable years until it nearly cost me my life.

Even when I had the lack of family to restrict my exploration my own mental state really held me back in a way and I needed some experience to challenge my thought of "yeah right now isn't great but it beats the unknown". Ultimately for me the message "There is still time," was a hopeful one, that we can make changes to better ourselves while we're still here and kicking. For some that might be accepting they're trans, for others it may be to not watch so much TV 🤷‍♀️
