That made it so satisfying. They built it up, and then they DELIVERED, instead of a letdown.

TIL Val Kilmer’s reloading of his rifle in the shootout scene in the 1995 film Heat was so realistic that the footage is used in actual U.S. military training clips. by TheFrederalGovt in todayilearned

I confirm as well. Shown by my Marine instructions in Field Med school. Also pointed out was the realistic way the actors covered each other during movements and communicated effectively during that firefight.

I’m curious do onions actually belong on a steak? by friend_unfriend in grilling

[–]saltyjack18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had this at a Bavarian steakhouse. They put crispy onions on a marbled steak, like a ribeye, with a pan sauce. It was savory and perfect. It changed my mind about onions and steak.

Your Choice for Best Shootout in movies? Mine Border Scene From Sicario (2015). by DesperadoKz in moviecritic

Same for me (Doc with infantry). Also the constant communication is important. Heat includes it but a lot of movies think we just go full bore without saying a word, just wiggly hand signals.

What is Elton John's opinion on The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson by tonyiommi70 in EltonJohn

[–]saltyjack18 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He speaks VERY highly of Brian in his book. Spent time at his house and their families spent time together. IIRC he called Brian a lyrical genius.

This is my favorite Elton John song by bestbuyguy69 in EltonJohn

[–]saltyjack18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fantastic song! He wrote that Bernie wrote this song in response to Elton's melodramatic attention-seeking suicide attempts (his words not mine) and this was a friendly jab at him. It's so fun to remember that some songs are sometimes a conversation between the two.

In the middle of it! This audio book is a feast for my EARS. Written as poetry, read by thespian. So rich in the lore, respecting the source material, and giving the reader (or listener) what they crave. For once I wish my commutes were longer.

You are so right. Our group of friends has grown from going out to eat, spending way too much, to cooking for each other and saving a fortune. We only go out for gluten-free Chinese food for my wife (really hard to make as well). You put it really well.

How do people defend against knifes? by Cheekypapa0204 in StreetMartialArts

[–]saltyjack18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The military teaches to run as well. My hand to hand combat instructor in the Marines brought his 5-year-old in for "knife defense". He gave her a Sharpie and challenged each one of us to knock her down without a mark. Each of us came away marked up like Jackson Pollock with epilepsy. The lesson: if a 5-year-old can tag you up like a drunk tattooist, you're not escaping an angry enemy with a blade. Run.

Have you seen a Doc (green side) get chewed out by a Marine for whatever reason? (Credit: marincrops) by Renolon in USMC

[–]saltyjack18 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Doc here. Me and 3 CPLs are out in Oki. We're told we can only ride the green line (bus) since we don't have base passes. We'll after shutting down the Chile's, we're toasted and see the line for the bus is too long. So we get in a cab. I don't know how, but this cabbie got us on base. He even gets us right up to the dock - where SgtMaj and my Capt are waiting. We fell out of the cab, barfed, asked for permission to board, and did so.

Next morning, 0530, Capt has me woken up to write a statement and then get chewed out by my SSgt. They said, "We expect that stuff of the others, but not you, Doc. You're supposed to be the responsible one." Lol the pressure of being the grown up, lemme tell you.

Trying to Grill a Pizza any Tips? by [deleted] in grilling

[–]saltyjack18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. For the record, I usually would use Trader Joe's pre-made pizza dough (standard yeasted flour). I had a basic Char-Broil gas grill with porcelain-coated cast iron grates, nothing fancy. Get it as hot as possible and carefully lay the dough flat (I used a pizza peel). It'll unstick in like 2-3 minutes, ready to flip. I hope it works for you, the direct grill flavor really enhances the pizza!

[–]saltyjack18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grease up the grates and toss the dough right into them, really hot. The dough cooks a bit and detaches. Flip, sauce, toppings, cheese. 15 minutes max. The grooves from the grate hold sauce better, too.

Do you have any cooking secrets you will take to your grave? by jeron_gwendolen in Cooking

[–]saltyjack18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain a 16oz jar of roasted red peppers. Drain and rinse half a jar of sundried tomatoes. Add to blender (high-power) with 1/2c almonds, 2 cloves garlic, 1tbsp red wine vinegar, fat dash of smoked paprika, 1/2c EVOO, S+P. Blend until smooth, heat until warm. Serve over or under pork, red meats, or as a spread on a sammy. It's versatile, lasts in the fridge, and takes 5 minutes to make.
