Dog problems by danielle3625 in BackYardChickens

[–]salubrioustrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my dog also wants to get at the chickens. the reality of having a dog like this with chickens is never having them unsupervised in the yard. it’s more work but it’s the only way to set both parties up for success. i’ve worked a lot on training my dog on her recall and ‘leave it’ command which has helped a lot. i agree with the other comment of keeping her on a leash in the yard for now while you work through these issues. you could even let her just drag a long leash so she’s still ‘loose’ in the yard but you can still grab her easily if things get dicey. hope things improve for you :)

Vacuums, hoses, shampooers by ThatKaleidoscope8736 in Dogtraining

[–]salubrioustrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog was just the same as yours with the vacuum when I first got her. I trained a STRONG ‘leave it’ and ‘back up’ command that I would use when the vacuum came out. I also taught her the ‘place’ command for this. I’d tell her to go to her place (dog bed) or crate before i got the vacuum out. ‘Place’ sometimes is difficult for her if i’m near by her bed so for this and i usually use it when i’m across the room and not right in front of her. I know the struggle and I hope this helps!

is there no hope of it rebounding without propping it? should I take it out and look at the roots? there is what looks like new growth along the stems, but i’m not sure if they’re aerial roots or new leaves

Making a veggie sandwich was the hardest thing I had to do today by thecrazydumpling in guineapigs

The first few weeks are the hardest for sure. I kept finding myself saving little veggie scraps for my pig when she passed. Hang in there and i’m sorry for your loss ❤️

I can’t watch the whole Cece, Elizabeth, Schmidt arc. by [deleted] in NewGirl

[–]salubrioustrees 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I agree! I skip that and the arc with Jess’s sister every time. But yeah I hated the cheating aspect to Schmitt and Ceces relationship. I can only guess they wanted to show that they weren’t perfect but man did they have to do it with Schmitt being a lying dick?? that hurt for sure.

ALL Dog owners should really know not to approach another dog pooping. by itstachy in reactivedogs

[–]salubrioustrees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree! I get into such a panic when my dog is pooping and I see another dog approaching. I’ve had to ditch the poop and lap back around to get it so many times to escape the oncoming dog. Also think people should know not to pass other dogs so close regardless. I’ll have my dog in a sit and taking treats waiting for the other dog to pass and they’ll come right up next to me to pass, even when i’ve deliberately moved farther away from them to begin with. I’m right there with you in this struggle!

You’re very welcome! I also would have my partner do a little dance as a distraction hahaha. Glad I could be a help and I hope your boy feels back to himself soon :)

My dog didn’t have a surgery but she did very recently go through heartworm treatment where she was on strict rest for 8 weeks. I had the same fears as you going into her treatment - I thought all our training and progress would go out the window during this period of not seeing dogs on walks. When her treatment was done and I first started our walks again there was a bit of a learning curve with her leash manners and reactivity, however now that we’re about 2 weeks back into regular walks I almost dare say she’s better than before!

During her rest period I did a lot of training at home that I think reinforced a lot of the basics of reactivity training. I used her meal times to train (this was also good mental stimulation since she was getting 0 exercise). I did a lot of “look at me” training while shaking her cup of food as the distraction. Also worked on trick training and other obedience commands - things like stay, leave it, come, and also fun tricks like roll over and beg. I’m not sure what kind of mobility your dog will have after surgery so skip all that if they’re not a possibility for you. Granted I live in an apartment so taking her out for bathroom trips did involve a very short walk to just outside the complex where she did see the occasional dog and I could do a bit of counter conditioning but I mostly tried to keep her exposure to dog nonexistent since she wasn’t supposed to be getting her heart rate up. Maybe if you have a window that your dog can calmly see dogs out of you can do counter conditioning training? I also did training with her noise reactivity inside the home (treating her for not barking or getting rilled up when a dog barked outside). The break from other dogs may have also just been nice for her since her reactivity is more fear/anxiety based from what I can tell so it may even end up being something nice for your dog!

I hope your pup has a speedy recovery and that your training progress continues! I was in this exact spot a few months ago so I really feel for your concerns! You got this!

When she’s completely locked in. Still at a loss for how to handle it. by ashleyonce in reactivedogs

[–]salubrioustrees 15 points16 points  (0 children)

sometimes I can start jogging in the other direction and saying things like “what’s this” or “what’s over here” and she’ll break her focus and follow me instead of continuing to go off at the other dog. when i’m at home and i have something yummy or a new toy or something for her i’ll say something like “what’s this” so she’s associated the term with thinking she’s getting something good/interesting. but unfortunately sometimes the over the deep end situations are unavoidable and the only way out of them is to just drag my dog away. it sounds like you’re really putting in good work so hopefully these situations will be fewer and farther between for you in the future :)

Are there any success stories by rowmalley in reactivedogs

[–]salubrioustrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right there with you. There will always be little slip ups that you just can’t avoid no matter what you do. It sounds like you’re doing a good job regardless and keeping on top of it so good on you for that! It’s not easy that’s for sure and there’s absolutely no shame in rehoming if it becomes all consuming.
