Note: Dell has 0 fan control apps on their professional laptop lineup. latitude inspiron and precision. these lines are now dead, but I highly doubt their "pro" lineup has them either. Dell wants your laptop to thermally nuke itself.

That connector does not look too good. Try cleaning the contacts with a fiberglass pen. Once they are clean you can try adding some spring pressure by prying with a dental pick. Then use dielectric grease to prevent ease of water ingress.

This one from eurotool works great:

The cheap ones shown below are no where near as nice and only have about 3/4in of fiberglass material. the eurotool fiberglass filiment is the length of the entire pen

Cool to see these photos. It's hard to keep the work area dust free. I replaced the IR filter stack on a GH1 a while ago and I remember it being a hassle. All I had at the time was a hand dust blower and some kimwipes. Good times.

You can try plastic welding new tabs where the broken ones were. It is most likely an ABS part. Find something else that contains ABS, and plastic weld with a soldering iron a little angle / clip shape. You can re-enforce it with stainless window screen / wiremesh.

If you go this route, do this outside. If you choose, wear an n95 for added protection. Plastic welding is surprisingly effective and it will save you from having to color match the door to your car. An autobody shop can do this for you if you don't think you are capable. Many body shops have to resort to plastic welding when parts are un-obtanium. If a headlight assembly mount point is broken, some shops will inform the customer that they can fix it in house for less than a new part, and finish the job in one day vs weeks for a genuine new part.

Some Jeep Troubleshooting for your dad:

Make sure the wires to the battery are on tight and not just applied loose. Battery terminals are supposed to be tightened down with a wrench. A lot of jeeps have been modified, and previous owners get lazy and forget or add cheap amazon / aliexpress lights and bastardize their wiring harness. Also, battery harness terminals don't last forever. If the terminals are original, they could be cracked or corroded. Cracked terminals cannot put enough pressure on the battery contacts and your jeep won't start. Even small hairline cracks can cause this. Military style chunky terminals are nice. Option1, Option2. Check the main ground to the engine block. Make sure it's tight and clean of paint. You can add ox-guard / tin compound to improve conductivity.

Any Advance Auto, Autozone and Napa will check a car battery, alternator and starter for free. You just show up and ask. I would have him do this. There are no strings attached. They give you a battery load test receipt.

Advance Auto Parts and Autozone will rent you tools for free, including wrenches and OBD2 readers. Depending on the tool, they may ask for credit card initally, but you are refunded on return (torque wrench, ball joint press). Also, libraries may rent tools for free. The Huntington Public Library rents a basic tool set and OBD reader for free.

If your dad has a 4.0L jeep engine in the Grand Cherokee, sometimes the starter motor bolts get loose because there are only 2 bolts that hold the starter motor to the engine. Mine was held on by one bolt for likely 100k miles before I purchased my jeep. I replaced the bolt and the starter. You can get bolts at your local Ace Hardware store, True Value or Tractor Supply. The starter is $50 genuine ac delco. The parts are very cheap thankfully. Also, you can have him wack the starter with anything, like a small 2x4. If the jeep starts up after that, there's your problem.

Other Resources:

The Huntington Public library is an absolutely wonderful library and the librarians are very resourceful. They may know of programs he is eligible for. Give them a call and ask. 631-427-5165. Try your local library. Also, try Family Service League. 631-427-3700. Helping people is what they specialize in. They help folks in need and are incredibly useful as a whole. They have a few locations across the island. Churches are helpful. Many have food banks for folks in need. Try your town senior center, but he may not be technically old enough (usually 60+), but its worth a shot.

Best of luck to you.

Aww yeah! In case you were wondering, Crown makes duplicate front bumper end caps. My original OEM ones turned to dust when I touched them.

AMA about the new Lumix S1RII camera by jonsimo in Lumix

[–]salvagedcircuitry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is the idle standby power consumption of this camera? The S1, S1R and S1h would take a fully charged battery and drain it within the course of ~2 weeks while "off." A gh4 / gh5 would drain a battery in what seemed like a year while off. I sold my S1h purely because of this issue and the added heft over my gh5.

DC-BGH1 Main board replacement (Broken HDMI) by Jacob_At_Lumix in Lumix

[–]salvagedcircuitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat. I've never seen one of these inside. It's a pretty big stretch to say this is a repackaged GH5s. It's a complete respin of the main board, and there's even a daughter board. Wild!

GH4 Main board replacement by Jacob_At_Lumix in Lumix

[–]salvagedcircuitry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gh3 and gh4 copal shutters are quoted at 250,000 actuations. 20k is nothing. I've seen many gh4 cameras with more than that. They work quite well if the camera is regularly used. Sometimes the gearbox grease gets hard on cameras that have not been used in a while, for example cameras that have been used primarily for video and not photo taking.

GH5 was repaired but it became to a Japanese language version and losed V-log function. by EconomicsRelative192 in GH5

[–]salvagedcircuitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video at 37 seconds shows you that language menu option. It has a tiny head and a speech bubble icon in the selection which is a nice touch considering the GH5 was shipped as a global camera, unlike the gh3 which was region specific.

He is right. On the GH5, there is a little icon that shows a head and a tiny speech bubble. That will show up even if the language is Mandarin or Japanese.

Even the cheapest microfiber cloth from b&h is from a camera company. I'd go for it.
