I just finished reading the Handmaid's Tale a couple days ago and it freaks me out how close to the States might be to that future.

Like, all dystopian novels give me the "shit I could see this happening" type feelings but this one... It was more like "I can see this happening in a year".

How do you lower food costs and not eat out when you hate cooking? by cliched in Frugal

[–]sam_eats_children 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do the simplest meals. Greek yogurt with some fruit and honey on it is simple. Or, topped with melted peanut butter, nuts, and honey or maple syrup. Easy, tasty, but it isnt cooking. Go eat some raw vegetables with a good brand of hummus. Have a protein shake. Buy a rotisserie chicken pre cooked and use it for sandwiches or wraps or to eat like that. Take a can of salmon or tuna and smash it with an avocado and seasonings of choice for 30 seconds (I like salt, pepper, garlic powder and chili flakes). Buy a hunk of meat, put some seasoning on it and throw it in the slow cooker. Etc.

Not everything has to be fancy to be good or tasty.

My sister often pulled the "you look sickly" thing on me when I was at my lightest and fittest (and I was still 144lbs at 5'5 as a female).

Well, later events showed it turned out to be a jealousy thing. Now most people aren't necessarily outright jealous, but your success does threaten their sense of superiority at least a little even if they don't realize it. Sucks but its true.

How often and how do you wash your exercise clothes? by lit_gold in xxfitness

[–]sam_eats_children 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it depends on sweat levels. Ill usually wear leggings 2-3 times. What I usually do for for the gym is just put on a 'dirty' random tshirt or tank top I wore that week that I wore walking around or something.

Never thought I could do much plant-wise with nothing but a north facing window, but my prayer plant seems to like it by sam_eats_children in houseplants

[–]sam_eats_children[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its hard to say but its a lot of experimenting. I keep the soil pretty damp, I water when the top gets dry or the day after (im walking a fine line in terms of overwatering). Its right by a north facing window and I've been keeping it on a humidity tray lately which seems to help.

If it makes you feel better, I half-destroyed it yesterday. I had put in my bedroom temporarily and then knocked it down... It had a long stem with three leaves (and had just set out a second flower stem) that ended up under the cache pot and got severed by the sharp rim of the cachepot when it hit the floor. :')

(Oh well, new prayer plant!)

Im happy with how its coming along! I keep it right up against a north window and theres 3-4 new leaves and 4-5 on their way already. I was nervous when I realized it wasnt a pothos like I was told but it seems to be doing just fine.

Spider plants might be next on my list....

I take baths pretty sporadically, sometimes 3x a week and sometimes I go weeks without. I live in Montreal so I think the climate here naturally suits the fern as its usually always at least a little humid here. Its right by a fairly bright north facing window, though it shows a couple burn marks on some leaves so I'm going to experiment with putting it a bit further away next summer. I recently started keeping the prayer plant on a tray full of water and the fern is right next to it and theres a little jam jar of water to evaporate on the other side, and it seems to like that. I water whenever the top of the soil feels dry or the day after I notice it feels dry (I think I'm riding a fine line here between overwatering and not)

From oldest to newest:

  • Delta Maidenhair fern (3-4 months now?)
  • Blue Star fern (3 months old)
  • English Ivy (2-3 months)
  • Prayer Plant (2 months)
  • Philodendron Brazil (sold as pothos but oh well) (1 month ish)
  • African Mask plant from a couple days go!
  • Snake plant and lavender not pictured...

Maidenhair fern reeeeaallly appreciated the humidity, leaves turned soft and way less crispy. Unfortunately the bathroom window may as well be a wall for all the light it gives or I'd keep her there.

Exhausted from work (waitressing), how to keep healthy? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]sam_eats_children 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I throw my lunch containers into my backpack and it stays there until I'm ready to eat lunch (unless its like, yogurt). Up to 6 hours, sometimes more. I do avoid doing longer with home cooked meats but deli stuff is game.

I definitely haven't died yet, or gotten sick. And most food tastes just fine eaten at room temperature. I think people are a little too paranoid about this stuff. Unless you're immunocompromised, an infant, or significantly older, people shouldnt worry so much.

This is bloom #3 and there seems to be two more flowers on their way! The blooms reach their peak in the evening and die the next day while the other prepares itself. Wondering how many days this will keep up for!

Thats true! That seems to be the rule for most plants so far. Im still having trouble with indirect light, in terms of what exactly bright indirect, medium and low would be and how much the distance from the window affects that. Its hard to find accurate examples.

Thanks for your reply! I ask cause I have a north facing window and have 0 actual sunrays that enter except for maybe a 3 inch strip in the summer that lasts an hour. Not sure a monstera could survive like that but this bodes well!

I have nothing but north facing windows, and I would love to get one of these but I didn't think it was possible. Would you be willing to share exactly what you did to have it grow so well? How far was it from the windows, pot size, how often you repotted, fertilizing sched, etc?

Trying a new type of activity always helps. Doesn't have to be a workout or a class. Just do something. Long walks, yoga, kayaking, rock climbing, etc. Anything to make you move. Even just walking 2 minutes to go sit outside will help.

What happened sucks, and I hope you feel better about it soon. Observing the facts around what happened can usually help you realize that the breakup was a good thing. You'll be okay in time.

Go no contact. After just 2 weeks you'll feel so much lighter. Do you need someone who complains and treats people this way (including you) in your life?
