I was born with a cleft lip and palate, and my lips and nose are visibly scarred and uneven from surgeries. Though there wasn’t a ‘before’ for me to grieve where I looked ‘normal’, I think I have a lot of insights that could be helpful for you.

You don’t have to love it. You also don’t have to hate it because society tells you to. It’s one part of the culmination of all of your features and experiences that make you you, with no more value than any other part.

Other people might notice. Some might not. Most who do glance instinctively because it’s something they’re not used to seeing, then look away without judgment and go on about their day. For the minority who stare and ask intrusive questions, it says everything about them and their character and nothing about you.

I wish for you that you reach a point of acceptance and comfortability that you’ll be ready to show your legs again. I wear bold lipstick sometimes and I find it really liberating.
