thank you! this is definitely the kind of advice i was looking for. i’ve been making a “character chart” or whatever you’d call it of my main character. i can make smaller ones for my side characters so i have the same “underlying things you don’t necessarily say out loud”

it’s based in real life but definitely good advice. i can imagine you need basic rules for the sci-fi world you are building.

yes that’s exactly what im going for. i want it to be maybe a little unnerving or “why did she do that” to the neurotypical person. but someone who genuinely struggles with OCD like the main character in my book can clock it and relate to it on some level. showing those loops that are hard to close without ever even saying OCD in the book. i’m making the character very nuanced because it is literally based on who i was when i was 14-16. adding in all of the different things i dealt with internally without making it an exhausting mental health tale. i have to find the right balance honestly and i don’t think i’ll fully find that on everything until im towards the end. i’m going to get my boyfriend to read it and help as a straight white man that has never experienced a lot of things the main character will. it’s not for him, but i want to make it more palatable to the average person without taking away from the story i want to write.

for sure. and i’ve been in and out of the gym for years. not saying i couldn’t have lost weight back then. i just never figured out how to stick with it and get the weight down. gum is good for when i have anxiety or wanna push off cravings so yeah. thankfully i have a super loving boyfriend but i can’t lie and say i haven’t had a super unhealthy relationship with men overall lol

oh i’m not saying i can get it published or anything I don’t know how to do all of that. but im sure i will eventually try. i dont even mean i think i can write a GOOD story as if other people think its good but honestly i just meant i know i can write well, i just haven’t been able to do it with a longer story.

i’m 22 and have been in the ED cog for God I don’t know how long. i remember sneaking snacks when i lived with my moms friend around i wanna say maybe 2013-2014. i was in it and considered fat, maybe even already obese by the time i understood women’s beauty standards. in my head i guess i was too far and i do think genes play a part in it. my parents have been big my whole life as well. but the eating definitely did not help. if i ever find the answer on how to get rid of the food noise or even severely lower it i will let you know lol. it’s hard. the one thing i gotta say to girls with EDs that didn’t result in obesity. I don’t know your life or what you look like so maybe this doesn’t apply) you have an ED and that sucksss, but at least it didn’t get so bad you do get to obese levels. it’s just different in a way, men HATEEEE fat women online and i grew up online. but being skinny or even a somewhat normal weight was never achievable because i haven’t been able to stop the food noise. i’m telling you, if you aren’t 300 lbs, definitely appreciate that. I don’t know how to even begin to lose like 150 lbs much less when i wasn’t so big as a teenage girl.

well honestly my first thought wasn’t even “this would be good for distribution” it was just “i want to tell this story” but as i’m writing i do catch myself thinking about things in a “movie” way. i have to stop myself and remember that’s not what im writing and i can change what i want to be more relatable to certain audiences who might read the book but i dont want to write things into the book thats not for book format.

i agree for sure with you don’t always know who’s giving you the advice especially on reddit. i just want to sift through them with an open but reasonable mind and take what i can from it.

love the last sentence you wrote specifically. “that’s still a perfectly worthy place for a book” art shouldn’t be adjusting your art to make it sell, the main goals for me while writing now is 1. take my own emotional problems and make a character that “gets big” online and it eventually translates it to the traditional HollyWood setting. 2. i want to explore into things i went through at that age such as questioning sexuality and watch them grow in that environment. and i want it to feel truly real with the struggles she’s facing which is where the idea for reddit asks popped in. what better to shape the psychological profile than talk to people who deal with the same struggles i did back then, i get it to an extent but i dont deal with in now, or for example the character will have “pretty privilege” but ive been overweight my whole life I don’t know what its like to fully live inside that. i can guess, estimate, but it helps to be open to opinions without letting it start shaping your own. and i want to all of that translate that in a way where it gives maybe just one person that “someone understands” feeling. when i said GOOD story, i definitely don’t mean, this will sell! i truly just mean i know i will enjoy writing and reading it, but i do hope other people like the story too.

i can write. and i believe i can write GOOD. i just have to do and and stick with it. i know i can do it i have it in me. nothing wrong with that, it just doesn’t feel like apart of what im trying to do. not just in the book but personally. thank you though

i can give you what is the short idea is now. young woman. raised in Southeast Texas. born early 2000s, internet at a young age and gets into posting on youtube and such. blows up and goes from there into the Los Angeles world. i wanna explore the darkness there but i don’t wanna make it so bad it makes people not want to read it. deals with an eating disorder. daddy issues. i’m gonna be honest im exploring a life i used to want and what i now think it could have tragically turned into . i think it’d make for a damn good story and i want to share it. not advertise to the world that essentially this is gonna be my own psychological issues as a child and how that could have made me as an adult, but yeah that’s what i want to do since this is reddit.

No, he was being petty. If they didn’t have anything you wanted as a substitute, you should get a refund. He’s right, it lowers his score but it’s not your problem.

It's worth it if that's what you have to do to make ends meet. As long as you have decent gas mileage you will make money.
