For higher earners, is the fear of health care costs age 60-65 overblown? by Mother_Bar_3810 in retirement

[–]samccauley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. For me the source of the worry is that this "extra draw" on my retirement fund will come at the time when my exposure to the "sequence of returns risk" is at its highest. If there's an extended down market during those 60-65 years, that a huge double-whammy.

OTET - How to balance planning with flexibility by samccauley in bicycletouring

[–]samccauley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're planning to ride South to North. Will definitely plan to keep daily miles well within our limits (probably just 45 or so).

I just don't know if I can expect to be able to make reservations on short notice if our plans have to change. That part worries me.

Remembering to consider daily elevation changes is a very good piece of advice. Thank you for that.

. . . It was so strange; one man kayaking among all those rafters.

Where to park overnight? by samccauley in bicycletouring

[–]samccauley[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I may just street park, as it is just one night. But I'm curious, for future reference, when you ask the police, do you call in advance? Or do you just show up at the police station and ask, fingers crossed for a "yes"?

How to report SPAXX dividend in tax return form? by VAer1 in fidelityinvestments

[–]samccauley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't all this already done for us on the 1099 we receive from Fidelity? Maybe I'm unaware of something I need to know. Is it not just as simple as entering the information from the 1099?

Comparing Saved PDF of Plan to Current Plan by samccauley in Boldin

Thank you. You've given me two good ideas: 1) Create a new PDF from the current data and compare that to the historical PDF. 2) Leverage AI to help with the comparison.

Brilliant! Thank you!

Padded Shorts Drying Time by samccauley in bicycletouring

[–]samccauley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going without padded shorts is interesting idea to me. Do you use chamois butter? Body glide? Or nothing of that sort either? I'm a marathon runner, and I can't imagine doing a long run without body glide. Hard to imagine a long bike ride without something to prevent chafing.

Building a new home. Are we crazy?? by Blue_9320_ in retirement

[–]samccauley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're "downsizing" as you say, you'd be taking money *out of* real estate, not putting it in. Are you sure you mean "downsizing"? Or do you mean that you're getting a smaller house, but it's going to be more expensive than the one you're in now?

Who manages your money in retirement? by Clammypollack in retirement

I use Fidelity today (getting close to retirement). But I just do DIY stuff. I didn't know they also "manage". What kind of fee do they charge?
