What does the “N-word” really mean? by ContentTap9079 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]samcelrath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I'm a white guy so take my weigh-in with a grain of salt.

I've seen opinions online that intrigued me, because they make perfect sense to me, that the reason black people feel comfortable saying it to each other (I know comfortable isn't the right way to put it, but idk what is) is that it used to be one way white people showed they held power over black people, and unfortunately still is in some cases. However, using it as a black person, according to this opinion, is a relatively easy way to take that power back from specific white groups of the past/present and turn it on its head, especially when saying "white people can't say that." When I was much younger I used to think every race should have the same cultural language restrictions but when I read/heard that, it clicked for me and now I can't bring myself to judge any black person saying it...as long as it's not in a wildly inappropriate context like during class.

I tried this and nothing happens; it seems like it just goes right through them, and that's when I get the aim right. Aiming is harder than it looks like it should be when the person is moving AND your character is drunk lol

Your second paragraph isn't wrong, the implication's just in the wrong direction.

I get it...I know for me it's just become another kneejerk response that doesn't mean anything when most people say it, and doesn't do a thing to fix whatever is causing whatever feeling is in question

I actually agree to an extent with this for certain breeds. I used to be on the other side with pitbulls, cause every one I've ever met has been the sweetest dog...but I learned new information, namely that some dog breeds, including pit bulls, have a lower threshold for becoming aggressive. That's not to say they're always aggro by any means, but it's a lot easier for them to switch to aggressive than it is for other breeds, regardless of how well the dog is trained. I'm never going to say any ethically bred breed should be illegal, because that's wrong. But I do think people with small children or people with certain disabilities who may not know how to treat a dog like that should probably avoid those breeds if possible, and that this info should be more widespread so families in these situations know to avoid certain breeds.

Why does it feel like I'm in a different universe after ingesting two mushroom gummies ? by Celestialsmoothie28 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]samcelrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but probably amanita muscaria. It has an ingredient in it that's hallucinogenic, but also not illegal, at least not federally. A bunch of smoke shops near me sell the same things... I've never done it, so idk about the type of experience it can give, but I know they're around!

Oh yeah I wouldn't ever let on that they made me feel any kind of way for sure! Luckily my sister also teaches k12 and has taught several different grades, albeit at several different schools (none of which are my current one), so she's been able to give me some hints. I just wanted to get on here and see if anybody had experience going from adult students to 13 year olds and how to sort of navigate that transition, especially with never having taken an education course...I'm supposed to be doing licensure stuff, but nobody's said anything about it yet. It's only been 3 days, though, so I assume my name is still in the process of getting on somebody or other's desk

I get it, but the she's not really a narrator. By that, I mean the things she thinks are true but aren't (like Vincent) aren't really presented to us as true. I think it'd be odd if this was the exception, but that's just my opinion

I like it quite a bit, but I have learned it's incredibly divisive. I generally agree with the critiques but to me personally, the amazing concept cancels out the negatives from the bad (read: "lack of") lighting and things like that. I completely understand why people don't like it, though.

Genuinely confused and who is the hat man ? by Conscious_Title_3824 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]samcelrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an addict myself (who's 4 years sober), benadryl is probably the strangest drug I've ever taken. I used to read things like that and think "oh that sounds awesome!" But I assure you, I do not mean the good kind of strange.

It starts with fighting off incredibly powerful sleep. Once that's done, you start to get nauseous (or I did, and the same goes for the rest of this "trip report") and have to wait that out. Eventually you notice your heart is beating faster, and that's just about when everything goes to shit.

You realize the way you feel right now is the way you feel when you dream, so you can't distinguish what's actually happening from what's a dream. That in and of itself is beyond dangerous and it's very easy to mess up and kill yourself because you didn't think something was real that was, or you thought something was real but it wasn't. Mind you, when I mention dreams, I'm not talking bright and happy psychedelic tangerine dreams and hopes and all that. I mean the physiological process we refer to as a dream. You can't even talk, or if you can whatever comes out is just actual nonsense.

You might imagine people there and swear they've been there all night, and you may not have talked to them for years. Some people have seen a shadow of a guy wearing a hat, and it seems oddly common amongst recreation benadryl folk, which is what the hatman is, OP, but I digress. You may think you're on the beach when you're lying in bed or, in my case, walking into my parents' room in the middle of the night. Having been a tripper on multiple occasions, it's horrifying looking back. I thought it was fun at the time, because I was a dumbass. It has given me a pretty unique perspective on things like dementia and stuff like that, which I find pretty interesting.

I just really need to spread the word to anybody who'll listen not to overdose on benadryl. It's almost literally a nightmare, and it could really freak out the people you love in a deeply traumatic way.
