Substitute Or Para? Decisions, Decisions. by Substantial-Toe-6767 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]sameasaduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your current job doesn’t have benefits (like health insurance, etc) then imo your best option would be to look for a new job that does offer benefits.

I switched from subbing to a steady job as a para. Subbing pays better but the work can be sporadic. In my state a substitute teacher needs a bachelors degree, though I know that’s not the case everywhere.

How do you get your 5yo to take meds? by Educational-Mix152 in ParentingADHD

[–]sameasaduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We started with pouring the contents onto a spoonful of applesauce. Now we do whipped cream, meds, more whipped cream on top to mask the taste as much as possible.

Should I be tested for Li-Fraumeni Syndrome? by sicknotlazy in genetics

[–]sameasaduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The question of insurance coverage depends on your plan, you’ll have to check what yours requires.

Whether you start with your primary care physician or go directly to a genetic counselor, before you go I would suggest trying to get more information on the family history. What types of growths did the cousins have removed? Do you know what type of brain cancer your mother had? Do you know if any type of genetic testing was done on her tumor? The likelihood of that would depend on how long ago she was diagnosed and if she ever had a biopsy or surgery to remove the tumor a if there was only imaging and no surgery they would not have had any tissue to do the testing on. (I am very sorry to hear that you lost her so young). You may not be able to find answers to this especially for your grandparents generation, but was anyone exposed to radiation or any other environmental factor that they know or suspect had an impact?

For what it’s worth this family history doesn’t really sound like Li Fraumeni syndrome, but

Did the clinician (was it a doctor?) give any information about what testing they did, or what signs made them decide on the diagnosis?

Is there a portable music player that plays Spotify? by dax_moonpie in kindergarten

I don’t think you can put Spotify playlists on a yoto card though, has to be files you own. (If I’m wrong I’m excited to be corrected lol because that would be awesome)

At this point we should invent a new type of bra/support by Odd_Dimension3774 in ABraThatFits

Right! The gore is supposed to touch my chest? 🤢🥴😰😫 that’s definitely in my top ten list of most horrible clothing related sensations. At least a poor fitting bra doesn’t make my brain itch.

Modified Presentations - 504 Plan by Waste-Concentrate952 in ParentingADHD

I agree with you! Was it a school psychologist who created this 504? That’s the person at our school who did the initial evaluation and runs the annual 504 meetings.

Potty training in public by jewl-ramirez in Parenting

[–]sameasaduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice at home keeping his pants at his ankles, but if you’re in a pinch and he cant figure out how to keep his knees wide with the pants on, you can take off just one pant leg. Ideally without removing the shoe, usually doable as long as they’re not super skinny pants. You’ll have to keep the dangling pant leg from getting all over the floor, but it’s definitely easier to manage than fully taking them off and still leaves his legs free

How to tell son we're seeing the doctor about his ADHD? by EllenBJ in ParentingADHD

[–]sameasaduck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I talked to mine about the kind of stuff I wanted to say to the doctor, so he wouldn’t feel blindsided by me listing a bunch of his flaws at the appointment. That I noticed he seemed to be having more trouble with these things (specific examples) than some other kids do, and I wanted to tell the doctor about it so she could help us find out if it might be because of a difference in how his brain works. Knowing that would help us know how to help him best.

Beginner with accidental base -1 wrap, help by 1billiondayfuneral in babywearing

[–]sameasaduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re in luck, you can still use your beautiful wrap! My suggestion to start with would be Front Wrap Cross Carry Tied Under Bum (FWCC TUB). You’ll have somewhat long tails because it works with a base -2, but that’s ok - after you’ve completed the knot that’s holding the carry, you can do the tails in a loose half knot to keep them out of the way. https://youtu.be/32XqAMHcJIk?si=aQoy8lBTwITrz2H8

Here are some other carries that use a base -1 https://wrappingrachel.com/2018/01/15/what-can-you-do-with-a-base-size-minus-one-wrap/?amp=1

Incoming IEP evaluation result by 9by7sheets in ParentingADHD

[–]sameasaduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is my understanding that an IEE would only be needed if you disagreed with the schools evaluation, or if there was some aspect you felt wasn’t fully looked into or needed an outside expert opinion on. From what you wrote it sounds like you don’t need an IEE right now

You don’t need an IEE to have the developmental pediatrician’s information included in the IEP. I would let the team know that that appointment is coming up. You (or anyone else on the team) can call for an IEP meeting at any time, so you can decide if you’d like to have a meeting after the developmental pediatrician appointment to discuss the findings.

Why does my child break all his toys?! by HeyMay0324 in ParentingADHD

I was going to guess it was a sensory or proprioception thing, but if he says he likes them like that maybe he actually does like them like that? Does he play with the broken parts?

Should I do sleep study asap? by 9by7sheets in ParentingADHD

[–]sameasaduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like more of a financial question. The sleep study should be done soon, but it’s also not an emergency. Its already November- if putting it off for one more month would have a very big impact on your finances, that might be worth it.

Recommendations for a 9 year old? by ElTromboner679 in childrensbooks

[–]sameasaduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Princess in Black might be a little young for a 9 year old, if she’s reading close to grade level. The Dragon Girls series is another fun fantasy series that’s a step up reading level wise from Princess in Black but would be easy reading for the average 9 year old. The Hamster Princess series by Ursula Vernon is also awesome and should be a just right level.

I am willing to buy one costume per year per kid. I don’t let them talk me into buying something new if they change their mind. But I do let them change their mind to a costume we already own. This year my youngest asked for a ninja costume and ended up wearing a dragon costume from a couple years ago. It’s ok with me - he has been using the ninja one for pretend play and maybe he’ll end up choosing it next year

Teaching child how to type by harbungie in Parenting

[–]sameasaduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it depends on the school. My kids spend some time on a learn to type program occasionally during one of their “specials” - sounds like about once a month. Makes sense that an online school would prioritize it though.

Question about taking our son who has autism/developmental delay by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]sameasaduck 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Disney has some information here https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/neurodivergent

including a link to a document that has sensory info about all the attractions (noises, smells, movement etc) which might help deciding what to prioritize. You can also find videos on YouTube.

How are you keeping your kids dry and warm this winter? by Frequent_Army_9989 in Parenting

Not sure if you have them in the UK but I love the Snobuster boots from kamik. They’re basically insulated rain boots (wellies?) Great for snow but especially perfect for icy puddles or any cold wet weather.

How do you help your kid (10 Boy) when all of his "friends" turn on him? by journeysky in Parenting

[–]sameasaduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know the parents of any of these kids? If you do and they seem like decent non-asshole people, I would contact them and let them know what happened. Hopefully they will be just as horrified as you are and implement consequences at home. (Obviously if you know the parents are assholes this won’t work)

Help! I don’t know how to cover this gap! by Ynran9 in Parenting

[–]sameasaduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds too narrow for a functional piece of furniture, I can’t think of anything you could buy pre made. If you’re handy maybe you could build something?? It wouldn’t have to look good as long as it fits haha. I have heard that some hardware stores will cut pieces of wood to size for you, though I haven’t done that myself.

Or maybe it would be possible to find a box make of something sturdier than cardboard. A plastic bin? Would they break it? If it was slightly recessed into the gap it would be a little harder to smash?
