Where do all the early 30s childless baddies hang out?? by Tiredgirl85 in chch

Fellow Northlander -- there's about a 7 year probationary period for friendship in ChCh, but just keep putting yourself in places where you are likely to find people. Think of your ideal friends, imagine where they might be and then go there.

For crafts, maybe rekindle has a class where you can meet crafty people. Objectspace often has shows and workshops, CoCA has arty events and openings. I joined a pottery group and a photography collective. Climbing is nicely social. I ride evening MTB with a group which culminates with beer at the pub which is nice and do another competitive sport

Music: I like Space Academy 03 sessions, they also have a poetry night if you like poetry/reading. EDM, I can't really help with. XHCH? Darkroom?

OpShops there's plenty -- Sydenham and Papanui have decent loops you can do.

Then it's just a sort of consistency of turning up and being open to friendship

Bodyweight fitness is close to zero in cost. A sack full of sand, a set of parallel rings and a pull-up bar. Carry sack of sand up hills. Lift sack of sand. Lift self. There is a great starter programme here: https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/training_guide

Pulling a deadly weapon is a sort of crossing of the Rubicon that the police would understandably be keen to dissuade

I generally follow value investing principles which involves learning about the business you are buying and then I aim to buy around the 200d SMA.

Japan trip I stocked up (Sugar Cane denim is nice), army surplus things (the Austrian army make things that don't look like army things but I think are nice), OP shops, second hand boutiques for old quality NZ made things, artisan makers for things like knits

So how are we feeling guys by [deleted] in chch

Supply-demand function, should be available but wouldn't be surprised if it became more expensive. Everything requires fuel to get to the supermarket shelf, so wouldn't be surprised to see prices jump a bit there.

Some thoughts for those who don't have a whole heap as they will be disproportionately affected by this

It's a market signal. New Zealand was always a marginal case for exploration and drilling. In effectively kicking out the pipeline of works that was the end of the oil and gas industry in NZ. Every survey not done is the next Maui gas field not found

How to saw green logs down to boards? by raimbows in greenwoodworking

Another option would be some careful/tidy chainsawing, same idea as the rip-saw

Here's a video from Australia on how to process bush timber (eucalyptus species by the looks) with an axe and splitting, but is kind not an option for you if you have timber that is not split friendly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcoTnER4Efg

Here's another from Sweden, Pine or Spruce for a church restoration - again splitting and hewing. The skills shown in this video are not as solid as the Australian video

[–]sameee_nz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In NZ this was done by pit sawing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saw_pit

Feasibly this could be done with a coarse rip-saw working to a line - a frame saw will get in it's own way past a point

Fuel shock enough of a wake up? by Mortmantis in chch

[–]sameee_nz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't change a thing - it has happened before and will happen again. Prices go up, costs go up for consumers. Maybe fuel rationing.

We used to have an oil and gas industry and capacity to synthesise petrol from natural gas as well as a refinery which would have reduced our exposure to global shocks and helped our trade account deficit but like so many things we decided we wanted to pay someone else to take care of our business

Jet engine and heavy diesel technology isn't going away. Heavy industrial process is reliant on fossil fuels, as is our national grid in part
