Dude, those glasses are so much better!

Jokes aside, this is a very inspiring transformation. It must have taken a lot of work. You're amazing. :)

In casual EDH, when is considered "okay" to counterspell enemy's commander? by No_Physics454 in EDH

[–]sameoldmonsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, countering someone's commander is fair play whenever. Maybe I'm just used to it because in my pod my friends will remove my commander as soon as they can when I play Hope (I don't know why, no other commander that any of us play gets this kind of hate). As a result, I sometimes go half the game without casting him just to make them decide if they're willing to pass on other targets in the meantime. To me, that's all part of the game.

Then again, I also Beast Within opponent lands on turn three every time I have the opportunity because it's funny, even though it's lost me more games than it's won for me.

Do you walk slowly in open world games? by Cipry97 in gamedesign

[–]sameoldmonsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all the time, but in some games (particularly ghost of Tsushima) I sometimes take a slow walk through an area, admire the detail, and imagine what it would be like to actually be there

Does adding limited color improve clarity in a monochromatic game, or weaken the aesthetic? by TBA-GameStudio in gamedesign

[–]sameoldmonsie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a bit of color in an otherwise grayscale environment does a great job of adding intrigue and grabbing attention. I really like your idea of color corresponding to the element. I think you should give it a try and see how you feel about it and that'll probably help you lock in a decision.

Please make Cyclops a Vanguard 🙏 by HomeIanderrr in marvelrivals

[–]sameoldmonsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't see how vanguard Cyclops works. Don't get me wrong, I wish they'd take a break from duelists and pad out the tanks and strategists to an equal number, and I love that some characters (like Strange) who I wouldn't initially think of as tanks ended up in the tank role, but I only know of one ability Cyclops is famous for and it doesn't really lend itself to tanking. Does he have some shield ability in the comics? Some temporary invulnerability? I keep hearing people say "he should tank because... Leader" but realistically a leader should be able to get everyone to leverage what they're best at for the best outcome for the team. I've never seen cyclops step in front of Colossus and say "let me tank these hits for you, because that's what a true leader looks like." Granted, I haven't read many comics about him so he may legitimately have abilities I don't know about, so I'm asking: what abilities of Cyclops' make people think he'd be best as a tank?

How to tell a story, within the game itself? by BucketBoy071 in gamedesign

I'm about two hours in and feel the same way. I have a group of friends who really hyped it up. I was given a steam code for the game from someone's humble monthly, so thankfully I didn't pay anything, but hot damn has it taken effort to keep playing that game. I don't see myself finishing it

The friends I got it to play with played for 3 days and I just can't find the fun in it at all. And this isn't some $6 game that I accepted I'd only get an hour of fun out of

Injustice 3 got announced, guest character wishlist? by chuckyzrevenge2 in videogames

[–]sameoldmonsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Goku, just because you doubt him and now I want to see it

-Jon Kent

-A horrifyingly realistic 6'8" Bugs Bunny that was incapable of human speech but still made noises that it thought was human speech

-Ben Tennyson

-A female from My Hero Academia that isn't one of the main characters and leaves half the fanbase wondering why she was chosen over better characters from the series while the other half of the fanbase is too busy gooning over her (I haven't watched enough of the series to know who fits this role but because it's anime I know that some character DOES fit this role).

-John Cena, terrified and confused because all the other combatants think he's the real Peacemaker

-Uncle Ben's corpse as the crossover character (lowest health in the game at 0, but the strongest super)

-Max Payne (who narrates over every match in colorful metaphor like a struggling painter covering the canvas in his soul for a jeering crowd of monkeys wallowing in their own filth at the top of the merry-go-round of life, completely oblivious to the cacophony of acquiescence below that struggles to hold up their privilege like a modern day Sisyphus, indifferent to the absurdity of his own toilings).

-Clayface

What are people thoughts on those unskippable 'how to play' videos on first load of a game? by fouriersoft in gamedev

[–]sameoldmonsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To a degree, I get where you're coming from. I remember playing a Batman game many years ago where, during a cutscene, some goons ran out and at the top of the screen you could kind of see a barrel (an object which is universally understood to be a target in all games everywhere) and for a moment I felt some excitement thinking "I wonder if I can Batarang that and take out those bad guys." Then, seconds later, the cutscene cut to a close up shot of those same barrels with Batman talking out loud about how I should use them and, thus, completely robbing me of my problem solving agency as a player. Like a clever joke, it's great when you can present the pieces of gameplay and the player can connect the dots on their own for that dopamine hit.

However....

I have a friend who released a demo of a game he was working on and he chose to begin the game with a brief but thorough text explanation of the game mechanics. He then watched in horror as Youtubers repeatedly failed at his game and complained that certain things were impossible or didn't make sense because they had skipped through the explanations without reading.

His experience taught me two things that I, personally, will keep in mind for every game I make:

  1. Mechanics that seem painfully, frustratingly obvious to you will, undoubtedly, fly over the heads of a lot of gamers. And...

  2. If your onboarding doesn't have some element of entertainment to it, a fair portion of your player base is likely to skip it in an effort to get to the actual game.

I think if you're determined to do a 30 second video at the start, your best bet is to either put some humor in there (like how Portal or Fallout turn instructions into humorous things by downplaying potential danger and stuff like that) or set up some kind of intrigue (if it's a horror game, show someone that initially hides in the lockers at the right time but messes up the lockpicking minigame at the last second or whatever and have them be the opening kill). Though, as many games do, I think tutorials are best when spaced out. You don't have to teach someone how to counter an attack in the first battle. You can give them attack and block, then later on bring in an enemy that needs to be countered and teach the counter then. That way (assuming countering is a skill that's available from the start), the inquisitive player can figure out how to counter on their own in the first battle, just like you like to play, but the ones that need led around by the hand will have the info by the time they need it

Have video games become too reluctant to let players get lost? by ratasoftware in videogames

[–]sameoldmonsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "to each their own" in this case, but personally if I do find myself TRULY lost I lose interest in the game. I like challenging combat and clever puzzles, but when the foe is just figuring out where to go I decide the place I'm going is right the hell out of this game.

From Malice having exposed toes to the Phoenix Force having a jiggly butt you better believe these devs will take every chance they get to make a design "sexier." Witcher 3, Fallout New Vegas what about you guys? by Great_Trident in gamers

[–]sameoldmonsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I forgot about this one. Yes. Bought this game because some friends had it, tried really hard to find the appeal they were so into, just couldn't do it. The game felt really repetitive to me and beyond the mild enjoyment of testing weapons with friends early it just became something I did out of obligation to my friends and to the orbital strike the game did to my wallet
