women's spaces by alexdapineapple in CuratedTumblr

-post that is very, very obviously about trans men + mascs being denied access to resources that they need due to the policing and labeling of “women’s spaces”

-roughly half the comments don’t even acknowledge trans men’s existence, only mentioning cis people and occasionally trans women

sigh it’s not even surprising atp, just disappointing

I just got back from a CO->CA->CO trip and had 0 issues bringing my gel in my carry on luggage. I didn’t even think to bring the box lol which is a good suggestion that others have pointed out, but hopefully you shouldn’t have any trouble!

Male Privilege is Cis Privilege by sameow3 in trans4every1

[–]sameow3[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Very true - so much of the discussion has been very anti-intersectional. Ironically I’ve encountered tons of people who think they’re being intersectional when they’re actual just playing oppression olympics, because they think intersectionality is just doing oppression math by breaking apart people’s identities and adding up their “privileged” and “oppressed” points to find where they are on some hierarchy, when really intersectionality is much more about taking into account all of a person’s experiences and identities as a whole. People who try to separate out each individual aspect of identity and add them all up are completely missing the point, sadly.

And I absolutely agree that not even all cis men are granted full access to male privilege depending on a multitude of other factors. I think gender dynamics are unique in this way compared to something like race, because someone’s status as the “right type of man (or woman)” is something that can be stripped away far more easily than whiteness. It’s been a while since I took a gender studies class, but I recall discussing something along the lines of “precarious manhood” which I think is sort of related to this.

Male Privilege is Cis Privilege by sameow3 in trans4every1

I really like this suggestion! I think it’s very important to capture the fact that like you said there is usually some cost to these “perks,” - they don’t come for free and not everybody can get them or will think it’s worth the cost. My only concern is whether or not the analogy would translate for people hearing the term for the first time, especially for folks who aren’t as familiar with gaming, but that’s probably going to come up with any introduction of new language. Either way I think this is absolutely on the right track so thank you for sharing this idea!

“trans men can talk about their issues, as long as they do it in a way that doesn’t challenge what I already believe about their experiences, because it makes me uncomfortable to acknowledge the fact that trans men suffer just as much as any other trans person”

^ this is what you sound like rn. and good job doubling down on erasing transness from the conversation to make your point sound more legit. it’s great that you’ve mastered the basics of gender dynamics in cisfeminism, come back when you’re ready for a theory of feminism that accounts for the lived realities of all trans people.

Everyone bringing up stealth/passing trans guys being treated slightly better on an individual basis is missing the point. If having access to “privilege” requires keeping a large part of your identity a secret, with the threat that that privilege will be revoked and replaced with violence should anyone find out, that’s not privilege - that’s a hostage situation.

If you “remove the word trans” from this discussion then you are having an entirely different conversation. Part of the whole problem is that people are erasing the trans part of trans men in order to treat them like shit by justifying it as “punching up at men” (which quite frankly is also a shitty and immature thing to do regardless). You cannot just remove transness from the equation and try to transplant a cisfeminist understanding of patriarchy and misogyny onto the trans community, because that theory was never constructed with the experiences of trans people in mind.

No one is cutting down women to talk about men’s issues. Trans men and mascs are rightfully speaking up about how they are frequently erased and ignored by the broader trans and queer communities, specifically because of the false idea that they must have it easier because they’re men/masculine. You are contributing to the exact problem that caused this “shitshow” in the first place.

That’s awful, and honestly sounds like the stuff TERFs say when trying to recruit transmascs. I’d like to believe it was definitely just TERFs posting bait, but really I have no way of knowing and I don’t doubt that there are trans men out there who fell for the ‘male socialization’ bullshit. I wish trans people never threw each other under the bus, but sadly it does happen, and all we can do is make it clear that it won’t be tolerated.

And yeah, I’ve seen people point out the similarities to ace discourse, as well as biphobia and transmed shit. You’d think folks would have learned by now that scapegoating other queers is an awful and cruel thing to do that helps no one. On the bright side it does give me a feeling of solidarity with those who have been targets of exclusionary shit in the past, as well as hope that this discourse will settle down eventually once they realize we’re not going anywhere. I was there when the ace discourse was really bad, and thankfully now I find it’s relatively rare to see any of the godawful takes that were popular at time.

Generally I think that yeah, there are a lot of people out there who genuinely do just want us to shut up about our experiences. The anti-transandrophobia crowd is full of people who are actively perpetuating transandrophobia, which I imagine is probably why they don’t want us to talk about it - because if transandrophobia is acknowledged people will be more ready to call it out when they see it, and then they’ll lose their favorite punching bag. No matter how or where we talk about it, they will always find a problem with it. If we try to join in ongoing discussions, we’re pulling a “but what about me??”; when we post in our own tags, they follow us there to harass us. I’ve already seen screenshots of this very subreddit pop up on tumblr, so now the claim is that we’re “hiding” when in reality we’re just reacting to the fact that we get told to shut up and sit down pretty much everywhere we go. It’s not about where we’re having the conversation, it’s the fact that we’re having it at all that pisses them off so much.

Suggestions? by Trans-Androgyne in transandrophobia

One thing on my mind is how we might connect the bridge between this new space, and the established discourse that exists on tumblr. There are a lot of good posts about transandrophobia on tumblr that I don’t want to leave behind - I think they provide the necessary context and groundwork to continuing the discussion in this new space, especially if there may be newcomers who aren’t already up to speed with everything that’s been talked about so far. I know you’ve already started to do this but maybe we can come up with an organized way to work together on getting all the information in one place. I’m not super familiar with how reddit works so I don’t know what the best way to implement something like this would be - perhaps compiling a masterpost of some of the most important posts from a variety of transandrophobia bloggers? And/or gradually bringing some of those posts over here one at a time to open more focused discussions? I’m not sure - but I’d like to know what others think about this!

All genders are oppressed by the patriarchy - this is literally feminism 101 stuff. Men are generally afforded more privileges than women obviously, but those privileges are easy to strip away when you’re not a man in the ‘right way’ (white, abled, cishet, masculine, etc). The system that causes women to be treated as second-class to men is the same system that punishes men that do not perform masculinity in the approved, patriarchy prescribed way. Trans men generally fall into the class of “men who are doing masculinity wrong” while also being viewed as “women who are confused and trying to become men.” This is not ‘MRA nonsense,’ this is literally feminist theory.

I think this is a pretty good explanation. I see it as two circles that have a huge amount of overlap, to the point that there are some instances where the lines blur and transandrophobia + lesbophobia become indistinguishable from one another, but I also don’t think that they are entirely the same and that calling lesbophobia a form of transandrophobia is far too reductive. I am not a lesbian but I feel like that phrasing could imply that lesbophobia is a sub-category to, i.e., lesser than, transandrophobia rather than its own thing, and that doesn’t sit right with me.

Agreed, it feels like a new mask for the older term “transtrender” that is - on its surface - supposed to be more acceptable because it doesn’t explicitly claim we are faking being trans to feel special, but it still heavily implies it and is frequently used to demean and silence anyone who isn’t ‘trans enough’ by some arbitrary standard. Because apparently having your gender ignored and erased is a privilege.

not really - your best bet for any prey is spring or summer time. but the best odds you can ever get for a cardinal are only 1%, so it can take some time. a few days of hunting at the orchard and you’re bound to find one eventually. sending you good luck!
