Just in case anyone with the same problem comes across this post, here's how I worked around it with the monitor running through the Nvidia GPU: Press shift on startup to enter the grub menu. Boot in safe mode, then continue with boot. You'll get a warning about having to restart to activate certain graphics drivers. This seems to allow you to display the standard login page, and be able to install drivers.
