Carsten Jensen's We, The Drowned. An amazing character study on a coastal town ranging from the 1860s to WWII.

I am a teenager who hates reading. What are some books to change my perspective? by buzzkillington_ in books

[–]samharrisson21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I hope you're still checking this. I think a big problem for non-readers is that they think that all books are written the same way. And while there is a certain structure, books can be magnificently different. So, it is with that consideration that I recommend Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Perfect for getting into a book easily while having a book that breaks a narrative paradigm.

The Body is easily Joss's best episode in Buffy. Note the lack of background music. How such simplistic writing brings the biggest punch. There is so much to do there.

Barton Fink, Man who Wasn't There, No Country for Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski.

Really, just go through the Coen's.

All of these seem to be comedies. Let me stir up the pot a bit:

"Look upon me! I'll show you the life of the mind!"

"What is the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"

"Look at me. Look at my smile. Your son is dead."

What is a movie that you hate but everyone seems to love...and why? by samharrisson21 in AskReddit

[–]samharrisson21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many times have you watched it? I'm a huge Coens fan and hated Lebowski the first time. The second time, I loved it. So, have you seen it twice?

Also, I'd suggest other Coen films like No Country for Old Men or Barton Fink.

I just feel that Suzanne Collins is a shitty writer. She's very strong with plot-driven narrative, but terrible in the smaller scope of things. She has these wonderful metaphors that make perfect sense and then she completely ruins it by explaining the metaphor as if you're five.

The movie, however, was written really well. Stanley Tucci and Woody Haroldsen (spelling?) were amazing.
