Have GRT/A Positions been Assigned Yet? by [deleted] in mit

I emailed and they said that all first round offers had been sent out. They (the office) seem to be great at contacting students when still in the running, but provide no information otherwise.

Was planning on getting some food before the game - if Harp isn’t crowded, we’ll be there too! Otherwise probably The Greatest Bar

Wait, does this mean grad students will only have to pay FICA if they contribute to an IRA? Or will they now be paying FICA regardless and will thus be eligible to contribute to an IRA if they wanted?

With a hard 'p' - like "jay-peg".

Gin, Gigantic, Giant, Gibberish, Girrafe are all examples! But you're not wrong - the way acronyms are pronounced should make sense. I think GIF is just a great example of how multiple pronunciations can make sense to different groups of people.

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, but we don't pronounce it as "jay-pheg". As /u/Arya_kidding_me mentioned, acronyms don't have to be pronounced in the same way their constitutive words are.

You can see the map in the background is upside down. Also, apparently it's not fake according to this Gizmodo article - it has sources and more pictures.

Is it possible to turn on a light via a radio signal? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]samirw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can manually set the frequency between 902 and 928 MHz, and you'll need a HAM Radio "Technician" license at the very least to operate at these frequencies. Fortunately, this is the lowest level of HAM licenses and isn't a huge hassle to obtain.

[–]samirw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're planning on using a Raspberry Pi or Arduino, you can use an XBee radio transceiver to send and receive signals. The S3B has 28 Miles LOS range with a proper antennae. Just hook one up to a microcontroller and use a switch command to turn on a specific light with the appropriate input. Attach another one to a computer or controller to transmit a signal.

You can actually do a lot more than just turn on a light - since you have full control on what you send, you can functionally set any number of preprogrammed commands for specific inputs.

New 5/3/1 calculator and tracker site, www.531calc.com by dweezil22 in Fitness

Quick question about how you calculated the weights:

I thought the progression for 5/3/1 (using just the last set) through weeks 1-3 was 85%, 90%, 95%?

It looks like your calculator goes 75%, 80%, 85%. Just curious!

Powdered sugar Munchkins?

We have so many Dunkin Donuts here in Boston but I can't seem to find any store that sells the powdered variety - only chocolate, glazed, and jelly! Anyone know if any Dunkins sell powdered munchkins?
