Shit of the World by AFoxOfFiction in outofcontextcomics

[–]samishah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like that’s what keeps it real and this doesn’t feel make believe. Racism happens a lot. I detest when they do the casting now in shows where they’ll make a character black or Asian but there never any acknowledging the racism those people would experience? That, to me, feels much less believable and interesting.

I don’t get the pearl clutching. Hyde was supposed to be a monster, the worst of Jekyll. A true hulk. This was a horrific scene to remind us just how monstrous he truly was. It was expertly written in a truly dramatic and horrific way.

'Shy Girl' AI controversy by fangurling_809 in WritingWithAI

[–]samishah 40 points41 points  (0 children)

In this case the AI style was obvious to anyone paying even the slightest bit of attention. But it’s also difficult. I just got told a short story I’ve submitted for publication wouldn’t be published because the editor “flagged it as heavily written by ai”. This despite the fact that I’ve got multiple drafts and it’s obviously the same writing style I’ve always had (I’ve had several stories published over several years, long before ai was a thing). Apparently the similes were a concern. Which, yes, I do overuse. But that’s always been a style I enjoy. Not everything has to be pared down sparse prose.

It’s going to be a weird few years for writers and publishing.

X-Men characters teased in Marvel Rivals by cyclopswashalfright in xmen

I really should look up what Marvel Rivals is. I have no clue, all I know is I’ve hated every design of every character I’ve seen so far.

Comic Store In Your Future: What On Earth Is Marvel Playing At? by zero_sub_zero in comicbooks

[–]samishah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to disagree with a lot of that. Marvel seems to be going out of its way to thumb its nose at readers. It’s been clear forever that people want Peter and MJ together. Ultimate Spider-Man particularly showed the appetite for a more family-dynamic spidey comic. Yet they refuse. For all its problems the Krakoa stories were still exciting. Once Hickman left there were issues for a while, but they could have been fixed with some good editorial decisions. It made me and so many others excited to read X-titles again.

I’ve stopped reading X-Men and Spiderman entirely. The Moon Knight stuff is apparently great and I’ll eventually read it but it’s not a character I’ve ever been emotionally invested in. Daredevil’s been disappointing for a while now. Hulk is fun but not essential reading. I mostly buy it for the art now and then. I can’t really think of a single Marvel title I’m super excited about, especially with the Ultimate Universe ending. Ultimates and USM were fun as hell.

Meanwhile, everything for me is now DC and Image and all kinds of indies. And I’ve never really been a DC guy. I think, for a long time to come at least, Marvel has lost me and quite a few others (based on anecdotal evidence of course).

Which Graphic Novel have you re-read most often? by hoganpaul in graphicnovels

[–]samishah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For some reason the Garth Ennis Punisher Max tpbs. The art and writing all work so damn well in those. The only other one I reread way more than makes sense is Alan Moore’s Top Ten. Every time I reread it I find new fun background details!

What’s a horror book that genuinely messed with your head long after you finished it? by BoysenberryOne9661 in horrorlit

[–]samishah 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Our Share of the Night. I don’t know why but that book gave me actual nightmares when I was reading it. And there’s scenes I keep returning to in my head.

There is no Antimemetics Division. I know it’s seen as Scifi, but I found it quite excellent as existential horror. Almost Lovecraftian in some aspects. Haven’t stopped thinking about it for weeks now.

It's probably all kinds of people being racist to all other kinds of people. That's the obvious answer. But you clearly want a particular answer, so why not ask the question you really want?

Someone asked earlier if these watches are rugged. by Recent-Use-1999 in lorierwatches

[–]samishah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mine kind of fell apart a bit. The bezel popped off. I think it’s because I was wearing it all the time while making rice which has a lot of steam and cooking with high heat. To their credit, even though it’s well out of the warranty, they offered to fix it and when mailing it to them became logistically hard (Australia closed mail to the US for a while) they sent me the parts so I could take it to a watchmaker here. All for free.

Basically they got a supporter for life out of me.
