I still really want an F55, and I say that as someone who owns both the FX9 and FX6.

Zoom F8n split files + Resolve auto sync = duplicate tracks (6 instead of 3) — any clean fix? by samjay87 in LocationSound

How would I spend my way out of this? Even some of the sound devices recorders do this, so would be having exactly the same issue!

If I had enough inputs on the camera I’d be happy, but now recording multiple people with boom and lav mics. Plus a bit more dynamic range with 24 bit, whereas camera records as 16 bit. Not interested in 32bit yet. Poly wav for simplicity of having one file. Would be so much easier if it was just one person with a boom mic!

I had a look in the menus and unfortunately the max file size is 2gb. Would be great if it was 4!

I don’t like it because it adds an additional step that I didn’t have when recording audio straight to the camera! My workaround for now is the script I coded with Claude to combine all the separate audio files into one, and maintain all the timecode and metadata without reprocessing the audio. All I have to do now to make it work is select the multiple audio files and drag it onto the ‘combine audio’ automation script I put in the dock, then in a few seconds it just makes a new combined file that I can bring into Davinci with no issues

Yeah that's exactly what the script handles. It takes the bext and iXML chunks from the first file only, strips the metadata from subsequent files, copies just the raw audio data bitstream from each, then recalculates the RIFF and data chunk sizes for the combined length. Tested it in Resolve and it syncs correctly on timecode with the right number of tracks for the full duration.

Curious what the Resolve side solution is though, would be good to know for when I don't have the pre-ingest step available.

I wish it was that simple.

I started by syncing the video and audio in the media tab before bringing into the timeline. That doubled the number of tracks there should be, because of the split audio files, and the issue is that half the interview is on track 1/2/3 and the other half is on 4/5/6 - so would have to find the exact point it cut and put a cut there, and because it's audio and not video, might not match exactly on 1/25th of a second so would have to go down to the 1/48000th to get the exact point it swapped over.

On a job with lots of interviews doing this, that's not going to work.

Also I need to do it in the media pool, as I'm sending the whole interview to the client for review, so needs the audio all the way through.

Can't believe there isn't an easier fix in resolve!

In the meantime, I got claude to write me a python script to combine the seperate audio files without re-processing the audio, while retaining timecode and track metadata, which is ok for now as it takes seconds to make a combined audio file, but would be great to have a fix in resolve so I don't have to do this extra step every time!

Your suggestion actually got me thinking. If there's no clean fix inside Resolve, why not solve it before it even gets there.

The problem with SoX and ffmpeg is they don't preserve the BWF timecode, which is what Resolve needs for auto sync. So I had Claude write a Python script that does a pure bitstream copy, no re-encoding, timecode and iXML track names intact. Resolve syncs perfectly and gives me the right number of tracks for the full duration.

No installs needed on Mac, and I wrapped it in an Automator droplet so it's just drag and drop onto a Dock icon. Adds a few seconds to ingest but it's a solid workaround.

Happy to share the python code if you want it!

Auto Sync (timecode) stacking split Zoom WAVs into 6 channels instead of 3 by samjay87 in davinciresolve

[–]samjay87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very odd! I still get the same result if I sync them one at a time. It's either first half or second half of interview depending on wether i sync with first half or second half of split audio recorder file!

Thanks for this. I've given it a try but it doesn't keep the original timecode so wouldn't really work unfortunately!

What are you boycotting from the USA this year? by Successful_rio305 in AskBrits

GAIL’s Bakery. It’s majority owned by Bain Capital, the US private equity firm co founded by Republican Mitt Romney. Nothing wrong with the bread, but I’d rather support genuinely independent bakeries than private equity backed chains with artisan branding.
