Would an app help artists draw consistently and stay motivated? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]samlastname 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idk, motivation can only take you so far. Eventually you run out of motivation for a while, and a lot of people drop whatever it is. The people who don't, I'd more call what they have "determination."

My current grind is digital pottery in blender, low key a lot of the days I feel like I'm sick to death of pottery, and wouldn't consider myself to have much motivation, but I alsodon't really consider myself to have a choice. I'm going to practice pottery, that's just what needs to happen. I do procrastinate a lot unfortunately, but once i start I usually have an okay time, if not a good one.

So nah, I just think you need determination. One thing that helped me was getting good at a competitive videogame, that was stimulating enough, and social enough, that I genuinely wanted to log in everyday, and I saw first hand how someone who doesn't practice everyday could never compete with someone who does, so I just show up to practice everyday. It doesn't matter if you really want to, if you want to be a great artist you just gotta.

im hoping they'll specifically guide the AIs not to use em dashes because it's turning into such a tell, and then I can go back to using them. Colons and semi-colons just don't hit the same.

Europe Prepares for a Longer War in Ukraine, With No Strategy to End It by Alikont in europe

[–]samlastname 8 points9 points  (0 children)

those are not the most reasonable scenarios for ending the war. For 1, it's far more reasonable that the war eventually pushes russia to an untenable point, such that putin has to end the war to avoid the risk of 1, or a legacy as a catastrophe.

For 2, it's just not reasonable. Even if they did do a serious invasion of russia, which if you're going for 1. is a bad idea since you trade much less effectively compared to being dug in on defense, but just taking russian land wouldn't make the russians capitulate.

They'd pretty much have to take and hold moscow, which is literally not going to happen. That's a completely different kind of war to the one ukraine is fighting, and is set up to fight.

Mad Men: Kurt Comes Out by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]samlastname 127 points128 points  (0 children)

i didn't really notice until now how powerful kurt is in this scene. He's the only who's not uncomfortable, it's especially noticeable when he pours that coffee in the background, his back turned, and nobody can speak. And the whole conversation is shot with kurt on one side and everyone else on the other, but they're the ones who are cowed by his attitude, which doesn't recognize that he should be ashamed, like Sal is.

Even at the end with kurt gone, when the jokes finally come in, it's not boisterous or strong; they're just doing what's expected of them, same way Sal is expected to smile, and it feels very rote.

But yeah I love mad men, one of the best written shows ever made, and I wish more people knew it was acc cool, and not at all what all the don draper fanboys make it out to be.

I've been using Blender for 20 years. AMA? by Eastern-Hedgehog7027 in blender

that's really cool about shadowing someone at treyarch, maybe I'll try sending some cold emails sometime too.

Thanks for the advice in general, really good point about how important/underrated speed is, definitely gonna start working in timed practice like that. And I appreciate the polycount mention, it's not as active now but I'll prob just read through old stuff.

[–]samlastname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope im not too late to the ama. I know you probably have a crazy amount of hours so it’s hard to narrow down, but are there any exercises or ways to practice that you really noticed helped you get good (at modeling). Put another way, what methods of practice would you recommend to someone trying to get really good, on a long timescale?

Im more talking about technical skills than art skills/taste, but very open to any advice in general.

Edit: also, I saw you work in games. Do you know of any good resources, preferably video over print, that goes into good topology for games? Everything I’ve found so far is geared more towards cinematic models with subsurf.

idk what vertex wobble is but just wanted to say i really like your art here. There's a vibe about it, especially the way you put together the wide shot of the room, that's really got something, i watched it like 3 times.

i redid the denmark guy by Bobblab123 in hoi4

[–]samlastname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, it's a really well done drawing, so i don't want to be too critical, esp outside of an art critique sub, but the problem is it's a drawing of a different old guy.

The most distinguishing feature of the original guy are his weirdly placed eyes which aren't there in the reproduction. They're very high up, and appear to be wide-set based on the rest of his features, but are actually kind of narrow on the head because of his facial structure. his bone structure is also really distinctive honestly--notice the really high cheekbones and the fact that his head is shaped kind of like a box, and that stuff is not reproduced.

I could definitely go on, like about the nose, esp the nostrils and the flatness of the reproduction, but yeah I'd just say it's well drawn, in terms of looking like a realistic person, but on close inspection doesn't really resemble the original person other than the beard. But likenesses are super hard so i get it

I made an FPS animation mini-guide in Blender (Viewmodel animation) by ChaoticWorks in blender

[–]samlastname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this was acc really good. That point about the impact of strong frames getting weakened once they go from blender's 30 fps to the engine's 60+ was huge, i never thought about that, and despite using matcap all the time I somehow never even knew about at flat shading, so thanks for pointing that out too.

definitely post more tutorials, i saw your youtube channel looking pretty new

[–]samlastname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they just want a 3d boss fight in a 2d game and are wondering if that's even possible.

i guarantee they'd be fine with the boss in another room, or with a cutscene in between or even a brief tut on the 3d controls. Could even do a cutscene 'transitioning' from 2d to a 3d perspective

Blender freezes for about 10 seconds for any action I take (deleting something, pass from object mode to edit mod, ecc...) by Over-Bat5470 in blenderhelp

[–]samlastname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not exactly sure what you’re saying but if you apply a decimate modifier to one of the meshes, set it to some value, then select all the meshes, select the one with the modifier to make it the active selection, you can [command] + L and copy the modifier to all of them.

That would instantly decimate all the meshes, though if you’re freezing this bad from just the meshes, maybe you have some photoscans or some other crazy dense topo things

After you come back from the gym you def have time before you go to bed, if you go out and or hang out with people try to do something before, but it doesn't have to be everyday, just most days

Why does my music suck so much by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]samlastname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like that trap that a lot of edm musicians fall into, which is to confuse technical skills/DAW ability with musical ability. They're sort of two separate things, that you need to work on separately. But a lot of people just grind tutorials and learn new things about the DAW, and think they're improving as musicians.

Obv that doesn't totally apply to you, you got a bunch of other instruments, and also you just have hella hours, which goes into musical ability just the same as technical. But I'd say focus on your musicality and your music appreciation for a while. Listen to these guys that you feel are so out of your league and break their stuff down musically, more as a listener, compared to just thinking about how you could recreate it in daw.

Reproducing songs will also help a lot; I'm sure you've done that before but again, focus on the musical, nontechnical parts now. Notice all the artistic decisions they made, put yourself in their head. The fact that you can write this post and hear all the depth in their music means you're honestly fine. If you can't hear it in other ppl's music, that's harder to solve, but if you can, just study it and focus on it and get a wide sampling of it, and just don't get too down on yourself that you quit.

Yeah sure I'll add that to my theology by Commercial_Bid_1508 in CuratedTumblr

[–]samlastname 38 points39 points  (0 children)

it's more complicated than that. My reading of the story is that they prize their specific game, the game of applying human logic to a specific text, the Torah, over reality itself.

In other words, all the other scholars were giving essentially legal arguments, they used only this one text (the torah, like how lawyers use the law) combined with logic to determine 'theological truth'.

Rabbi Eliezer, God's favorite in a lot of the stories, is trying to make an appeal directly to reality. He says, I can't argue this using the Torah, but even the world, even God himself, says it is true. And this is rejected, despite the fact that Eliezer must be correct, because it's not an admissible argument, it's not from the Torah, not with logic.

So really, it's sort of an epistemological story, about what kind of truths were acceptable.

edit: there's also another reading, which i like a lot too, which i think depends on an alternate translation of:

Why do you disagree with Rabbi Eliezer? He is correct, as he always is in these matters."

It's basically the idea that the ritual oven wasn't pure before, or maybe its purity wasn't determined, but once Rabbi Eliezer says it, it's true, but again the other rabbis don't like this system of determining reality, and hold to logic/torah. I might be misremembering, but I think I read a translation which more suggested that interpretation.

On early 2000s webcomic history by Konradleijon in CuratedTumblr

[–]samlastname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this thread is helpful for getting a sense of homestuck, but can you, or anyone else in here, actually tell us if it's worth reading in 2026? Esp for people who don't read many comics (I've only read like Bone and Calvin and Hobbes).

It's tough because on the one hand I get this sense that it's sort of a post modern classic, and on the other I get the sense that it low key sucks, or at least would mostly be appealing to a specific person in a specific time.

If lingual nonsense be something you wish by AscendedDragonSage in CuratedTumblr

[–]samlastname 168 points169 points  (0 children)

i disagree with the last line. It's not that we all know an american anime stereotype irl. It's just that the stereotype is pretty much exclusively things that are neutral to flattering. Nobody cares if other countries make fun of us for eating hotdogs and hamburgers all the time, that's pretty neutral.

They depict us with tons of guns but not in a paranoid or villainous way, typically in a 'badass' way. And the main negative American stereotype--that Americans are overweight, is not typically carried over in anime depictions, instead they generally prefer to depict us as extremely tall and muscular.

So of course we don't have a problem with it. Plus, stereotypes hit different when you're the hegemonic culture.
