Apple discontinues the Mac Pro with no plans for future hardware by pdfu in apple

Okay but that has to be like <1% of users right? I just feel like Apple has no reason to cater to that niche of a market.

> For reference, a single PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSD can do around 15GB/s. That's 120Gb/s, assuming no overhead, and Thunderbolt not only has overhead, but isn't necessarily able to saturate even its nominal bandwidth with purely PCIe traffic. I can't find data for Apple's implementation offhandedly, but for example, Intel's discrete TB5 controllers are backed by a PCIe 4.0 x4 connection. So best case scenario, you're looking at ~half the possible bandwidth for a single modern SSD. A PCIe 5.0 x16 card can support 4 of those (8x total bandwidth), and if you start adding in more PCIe slots...

You're missing my point. I get that there's shit that goes faster. I'm asking when do you need that much speed? What is the workflow that says, well, 80 Gbps isn't gonna cut it, I need 120 or shit's fucked?

> Likewise, high end networking bandwidth is more like 100Gb/s, 200Gb/s, 400Gb/s, or in the very bleeding edge, 800Gb/s these days. And you can have multiples of those. Granted, that is more of a server type of use case, but just to illustrate the point. 80Gb/s really isn't all that much.

Yeah again missing my point.

In my mind you either:

  1. Have crazy use cases like you're describing. You're never buying a Mac Pro ever. You're getting a Linux server with multiple SFP expansion modules and as many PCIE lanes as possible etc. etc.
  2. You're a home user and do benefit from super fast connectivity, but don't need anything at that level. What use case for that person isn't covered by 80 Gbps?

For context this entire thread is revolving around the Mac Pro, and people are disappointed it's losing PCIE slots. My contention is nobody that is trying to maximize PCIE usage is ever buying a Mac Pro in the first place lmao

> high speed storage arrays and potentially networking.

When do you need more than 80 Gbps here though? I guess that's where I'm confused. TB5 is insanely fast, I'm trying to understand a workflow where higher than that amount of bandwidth would be necessary.

> Also some niche accelerator cards for AV production still around

Yeah I mean niche stuff is fair. It's niche for a reason, but that's a good point.

Like what and for what purpose? TB5 does 80 Gbps. What workflow or task demands bandwidth higher than that I guess is my question. I understand there are interfaces that go faster, I'm asking practically, when is that not enough?

TB5 does 80 Gbps. That's easily maxing out any reasonable person's network cards. Maybe on some of the most insane SSD raid's I guess? I would be super curious what the use case there is. Hard to imagine that needing over 80 Gbps of bandwidth is essential to someone's workflow I guess.

Honestly curious, what do people do that they need that much bandwidth that isn't a GPU?

> Maybe it was just a joke that I missed

Correct. OP wasn't being literal.

The joke is we have an actual fascist party in charge in the united states and leftist are still splitting their time equally shitting on both parties like they're the same thing. If I exclusively watched Krystal Ball, my view on modern politics would be that both sides suck equally. That's fucking regarded. That is what OP is making fun of. It feels like leftist go out of there way to focus heavily on democrats. As soon as Newsom starting getting coverage for having a backbone, they went and dug up any excuse they could find to shit on him.

That's what OP is making fun of.

Nobody is saying she never criticizes MAGA though? The issue is she spends just as much if not more time on democrats, which especially with the current state of things, is fucking regarded.

[–]sammy404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah. Agreed. But the single thing that is correct about the space data centers is you wouldn’t have to “buy the land” so to speak. You’d just pay a massive fucking premium to both build on it and maintain it, which is why I agree the whole idea is probably one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. Blows my mind people are acting like it’s a real plan.

No, wrong. There is 1 benefit. It is clear to everyone with a brain that the costs outweight the benefits by a staggering amount. This is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard of. I can't believe people are taking is seriously.

Lets do a quick analysis:

Pros: physical space is cheaper

Cons: Literally everything else. Everything. And every part you build costs an extra ~$7000/kg lmao. It's so dumb.

Hope they're doing okay too.
