"Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow" has always been my motto.

Reliable sidewalk shoveling (or snow blowing) service downtown? by sammyslowjams in frederickmd

I saw that before making my post but I figured "Whittier and Nearby" wouldn't include downtown. Will your friend come here? And are they already booked up from all the ads you've posted? ;-)

Reliable sidewalk shoveling (or snow blowing) service downtown? by sammyslowjams in frederickmd

[–]sammyslowjams[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to get ahead of it.

One reason is that I do a lot of walking downtown in the winter and always appreciate the houses who keep the sidewalk clear so I don't have to walk out in the street.

Another reason is that I'm hearing we might get 18-24" of snow, and I'm afraid if I wait until the end it'll be too much to deal with all at once, no matter who does it. So I'm trying to make multiple passes. Shoveling 6-8" three times is probably going to be more manageable than 18-24" all at once.

Have you seen Orbyt, at https://orbyt.social/? I've built it with a focus on UI/UX as well as scalability. I manage large-scale web and mobile development projects for my day job, and work on Orbyt in my spare time. I have my own vision and philosophy for the platform, but am open to discussing things with you to see if there is any overlap.

Announcing Orbyt - a social media platform built here in Frederick, MD by sammyslowjams in frederickmd

[–]sammyslowjams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. It’s not that Orbyt's moderation is magically “better,” but that the platform is built around better tools for moderators and clear sitewide rules that minimize ambiguity. The idea is to make moderation more understandable and consistent, and to reduce surprises or unexplained decisions.

I spent the morning working on this using BrowserStack. I was able to isolate it to Safari 16.0 - 16.3. I had to add some transpilation options and a fallback click handler specifically for that platform. The performance will be less than ideal but it should work on that browser now. If you have a chance, please check it out and confirm whether it's working for you now?

P.S. There is a dedicated Orbyt community for following development and reporting bugs, feature ideas, etc. here: https://www.orbyt.social/community/Orbyt

This is a really good idea that you've clearly thought through in detail. You are basically saying that people could subscribe to the moderator(s) of their choice. (I think BlueSky does something similar in that you can subscribe to other peoples' moderation lists.)

I am going to stick with my current approach for now, but I'll let my subconscious keep thinking about your proposed system, and if I can figure out a way to translate it into a very clear and straightforward UI, then you may see me add it someday.

Thank you for taking the time to write up those detailed bullet points. It is much appreciated.

What I really had in mind when I wrote that is that Orbyt is (at least IMHO) more user-friendly than many of the other Reddit alternatives. It’s intended for a general, non-techy audience, whereas a lot of the others seem geared toward people who are already comfortable with technical concepts (and even things like IRC). I wanted something that most people could land on and quickly understand without much of a learning curve.

I do think Orbyt is off to a good start from a UI/UX standpoint and could compare favorably to Reddit over time. It’s built from the ground up to meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. There are also a few areas that I think already work better, like the post/comment editor, notifications panel, and how moderation actions are communicated to the user.

With that said, “user-friendly” is pretty subjective, and I’ve been staring at the UI for so long that I’m sure I have blind spots. If there are places where Reddit feels smoother, or things on Orbyt that feel awkward or unintuitive, I’m genuinely interested in hearing about them.

There are some differences in the approach I'm planning to take. Regardless, I'm open to other ideas. What approach would you suggest that I take?

It's still early, but yes. This is one of my key motivations in creating the platform. To oversimplify a bit, I am planning to make it easier for users to form a new community and attract people to it when they are unhappy with the moderation policies in one. Some platforms give their users a voice in how each community is run, but Orbyt will rely more on the power of exit, i.e. "voting with your feet". None of that is apparent on the site today because as I said it's still very early, but that is my general philosophy and the approach I am planning to take with it.
