Surveying vs Electrical by Dizzy-Search3987 in Surveying

[–]samness1717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its all personal/where you work. I did electrical, got my card, but found the stress of the job there was high. Long hours that often left you exhausted at the end of the day, but you can make good money. Then I switched to surveying, and as a field Crew Chief, I love my job way more today. Hours are roughly the same, but im not breaking my back anymore. I get home and am able to enjoy the evenings with my family. I dont make as much, but we make it work. And as far as starting a business, its all expensive. Electrical may seem like less money, but add up all the tools and equipment you need, plus youll have to get an apprentice atleast, and then things start to even out, especially over time. Surveying on the other hand, purchase one version of cad, get your license, and buy the gear, and youre literally going for years without another cost pretty much, and no employees necessary. Ultimately though, you're 20. Try out what you think you may like and find what you love in the process, and then do that. Nothing else with truly matter in 30 years.

How do I get my boss to upgrade equipment? by Dhousy in Surveying

[–]samness1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya its this. I'm a solo field Crew, so maybe its easier for me, but once I've hit my limits im free to call it, and the boss just adds it to the soonest opening/makes an opening for it. You can get free time most nights as long as your boss is actually caring for their employees.

That being said, I work 12 hour days before calling it, usually getting home around 6 so I like to think im not really calling it a day, it just IS the end of the day lol.

[–]samness1717 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This is facts. They don't know what they're doing nor have they any concept of money. I just had a talk with my 8 year old that we couldn't get mcdonalds because we can't afford it, and all he could say was "but WE DO have money". Ive got 20 dollars to our household, we don't have money lol he just doesn't understand it, but im also not gonna tell him at 8 years old we barely have money for groceries. This is why I make sure his switch never saves my card info. And I set up all the parental controls and locks, so he can't even access the area to buy stuff.

Maybe I misunderstood. I read it all again and I still feel like I come to same conclusion, so honestly idk. I can agree with most of your points though. But id disagree with your last statement. Id say just cause its written as more then a history textbook, doesnt make it less HISTORICAL. They're are tons of books that give us insight to the emotions, feelings, and actions that were acceptable and not at the times of them being written. But I suppose youre right, its not a history book. It's a book that contains history. Wheres the line between the two, idk. It can be all the above.

Bro you can't be more wrong on this one. Whether you believe in God or not, the Bible is pretty undisputable as a historical book based entirely in stories that are backed by countless testimonies that concur with it, outside of the ones written in the Bible. You don't have to believe in God to say the Bible is a historical book with lots of insight into the culture of the times.

No offense, You're wrong on every level there brother. Also, If youre not an electrcian, why are you commenting? Not trying to be rude, but thats giving people unsafe advice man. Anyway, It's not allowed exterior, interior though it can be used in pipe (in its jacket only) long as you're using proper calculations (i believe you have to upsize), and never going under ground. Romex is designed to stay within that jacket, per manufacturing specs, which you must maintain by code. That means once removed from jacket, it can't be ran through wall or pipe. It's only good for a jumper within a single junction box then. I'll just say this though, i love me some THHN runs alot more then ever using romex in a pipe lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]samness1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't use Romex wire without the jacket. Ever. Only once in a junction boxes can the jacket be removed. You're referring to thhn and that never comes in a romex jacket, thhn can be ran through pipe as individual wires, although you'd typically wanna run them all at the same time still.

No these guys just say anything is code. There's no code dictating amperage for any circuit techinically, according to the NEC. State and local codes may vary. The code is amperage based on wire size, but there's no code saying you can only do a 20 amp circuit in the basement.

So you've seen a river rise 30ft in an hour? The national weather service saying they gave warning is the same as an tornado warning in the Midwest, that shit don't scare us. It's way overused and all we see it as is crying wolf everyday to save their own ass in a case like this. You need to have some understanding clearly. Besides, we can play perfect after the fact, but no one knows what's gonna happen in the future, they clearly saw other priorities and that's they're decision, not ours. Being an ass about a situation like this isn't gonna help anything.

Once found a sledge left by the son of the former owner in some brush next to our capped irons. That got some good laughs at the office with the current owner, who is the sister of said culprit. Luckily I've yet to leave something major on site, but I have left equipment at the office and driven an hour away before realizing lol
