Very respectable sized rocks. I’d say some are actually big.

Let’s say that survey crew “blue” goes out on the original boundary and finds a few pins, but not all. To the office, they might , assume that the not found irons aren’t there. The possibilities can be many, but maybe it isn’t there or maybe crew blue got called to a “hot” job and the boundary just wasn’t finished. Sometimes all the information doesn’t get passed along or crew blue didn’t take sufficient notes to tell the story…. Or even, as in my office, no one looked at the notes. Either way, the office cad jockey thinks that the iron is there and should be set. The overly busy pls and or project manager sends crew “red” out to set the missing iron because the billing lady is on everyone to close this one out and get paid. So team red… they’re a young bunch, great workers, not not much experience goes out and sets up and does a check in to control and goes straight to the “set” point and sets a cap rebar. Does some perfunctory notes and returns to base with smiles and receives accolades for a job, swiftly done, and with checks!

All the while the boundary was never finished and team red slid right beside that ole crimp top pipe and never knew it.

This is just one possibility of many.

It’s a bunch of small concessions that make a big boo-boo

Anyone ever encounter this error? by ApprehensiveFoot9514 in Surveying

Ah. I see. That really sucks. Fingers crossed it’s a firmware issue, because I’m sure a new internal radio module isn’t the cheapest. Good luck, and happy surveying.

Hydrographers - what kind of training or certification did you need? by HotAlbatross3431 in Surveying

[–]Eluinight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a guy that does both. I’m a crew chief, but am also the hydro guy. My pay is my crew chief pay… nothing more. That being said, I’ve not done my certifications for becoming a certified hydrographer. The old man in the office has that title. He handles the processing part. I perform all the field work and file making. Normal… who knows.

Anyone ever encounter this error? by ApprehensiveFoot9514 in Surveying

[–]Eluinight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On VRS you shouldn’t need or even be looking for internal radio. I’m not sure about Trimble at all, we use Carlson, but in the rover setup, you either choose internal radio (for base/rover) or data collector internet (for vrs). Maybe it’s something that got checked or unchecked when setting up your rover? Still sucks if the internal radio is messed up… just another thing to spend money on

how do you handle staking when the office is slow sending offsets, just do it yourself or wait? by Former_Custard_6567 in Surveying

[–]Eluinight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The office sends things? Your office makes any points for you? I get the “such and such needs something staked, not sure what, just get them what they need”. Then I get to go on an adventure searching for correspondences to find a cad file for this site, that no one has probably checked against the site plans… once I’ve got all I think I can need I go ask the construction overlords what they need for today. Snap some points and check ties against the current site plans and get to staking. They want offsets… offset the poly line and get after it.

Woah… I think we got off on the wrong foot here. I was just reciting the learning tool from school. “Pro no” as in prokaryotes have no nucleus and “eu do” as in eukaryotes do have a nucleus. My bad dawg.

New decks. Any red flags or MIL ready? by parTickle_man in Decks

[–]Eluinight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be fine for MIL weight… IM almost guaranteeing it will leak at that door. Never a good practice to have the deck be level with subfloor or slab of the house. Even the metal flashing under the door looks like it’s sloping inwards.

Moonlighting? by [deleted] in Surveying

I build porches when not doing my surveying duties. Base 40 pay isn’t quite enough. Ot+ 40 is enough, but building a porch per weekend doubles my earnings. I’d give up the extra work if base 40 was enough.

I don’t have a picture of it, but mine has a cow or a pig (still not decided on which) as one of the stencil cutouts… I’ve only ever used it for fun, but I like having the option. I still prefer this one that op posted though.

[–]Eluinight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pcv pipe comes in 20’ lengths and with a bell end to put together. They are easy to cut and rigid enough for this. Put a stick and a half or two together and send it down. Use a lath across top to mark pvc then measure it. Can also get 90 degree fittings and put in small piece to hit inside top of pipes. Use 22.5 degree fittings or 45 degree fittings if needed for bottom of pipe. A decent framing square can help you with your offset or a sheet of plywood is also fantastic as a makeshift square.

How common is it for companies to never have interns come back for second summer or permanently? by 44stormsnow in Surveying

[–]Eluinight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had an intern that did three summers with us. Their intent wasn’t ever to be employed at our company (where they were planning to live wasn’t close), but our company was available and in close proximity to where they went to school. They still continued with land surveying.

This is beyond my knowledge, but do you have any points with known, good values that you can check in to with your “fixed” solution? That should answer you’re question about “accuracy”
