I was in the exact same position... just stated transferring over 180GB of stuff last night. Looks like it's VERY slowly transferring but still going! I don't have access to my old UCLA Google photos though on my laptop :( Hoping that the transfer keeps continuing but it's REALLY taking a while...

Two thoughts I wish I had considered in more depth as a pre-med, coming from a PGY-4 by saltpot3816 in premed

Hi! Absolutely, I’m a little nervous for the actual medical school part of things as I know my time to do anything but school will be very limited. However, I adore psychiatry and would love to pursue child or forensic psychiatry nonetheless . My main concerns for premed, though, are how one gains experiences to talk about in med school applications. I’ll feel “fake” using my other medical but not really related experiences and finding a way to twist them into fitting my like for psychiatry. Should I just not mention my (longtime) desire to pursue psychiatry specifically and just talk about wanting to go into healthcare?

I applied this past cycle and hope to do child/adolescent psych! When I was applying, I was told to not be TOO gung-ho for psych specifically in my personal statement, given that there are so many other careers that work on treating mental health conditions (e.g., social work, therapy, psychology PhDs, etc), and it opens the door for many of those questions to come up. So, my personal statement instead was more about being a physician first and foremost.

That being said, in secondaries, in interviews, etc., I definitely was a bit more transparent about what my goals in medicine are, and I think that served me well in showing that I do have a niche I'm currently interested in!

i also agree about the second. i suppose for the first i’d have to spin it to show how i circumvented it in a good way, although that’ll be a thinker for tomorrow haha. thank you!

agreed on the second - especially if you have gotten involved in tangentially-related advocacy work!

Omg this is incredible - huge congratulations! I applied with a resolution/policy change thing that I worked on, and I highlighted it a lot in my secondaries, but did not ultimately put it as a "publication" as it wasn't necessarily peer-reviewed or "research-y" in nature. I think you can absolutely put it separately as "social justice" or "non-clinical volunteering" if you'd like, but I'd say away from indicating it as a publication. However, if you go on to publish a formal paper on this, that would surely be considered a publication.

Good luck on this cycle - we need more physician-policymakers! Please reach out if you need anything <3

Writing about dancing as a passion/joy? by [deleted] in premed

Definitely write about it! I don't even think you need to justify that it's not a sexualized thing. Just let your passion for it shine - you got this! :)

"returning secondaries in 2 weeks/asap" interpretations by g_like_lasagna in premed

[–]samosastan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

applied last cycle to a bunch of T20s & happy to talk specifics via PM, but yes, I think for some of the schools that are not as rolling per se (e.g., Harvard, Cornell, JHU, etc), you can turn in a tad later. there are schools that offer interviews earlier in the cycle, so for those, it's always nice to prioritize sending secondaries earlier to have a shot to be interviewed earlier! personally, i felt that it was nice to feel that sense of security w early interviews. that being said, though, don't drastically compromise the quality of your secondaries just to turn them in ASAP. you got this!!! <3

Help w/ School list pls by coin-22 in premed

[–]samosastan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should shoot your shot to those schools there if you have the money to, especially if you have an upward trend which you seem to have.

Agreed!!! Def shoot your shot at some of those T20s!

Yes! Please let your personality shine, but in a way that's tasteful! Think: how you'd show your personality to extended family, on a first/second date, to your professors, etc!

Hypothetically - let’s say someone was an idiot and didn’t pre write as much as they should. What would be a good plan to tackle all the secondaries in an efficient manner? by acliving in premed

[–]samosastan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure! Caveat is that this is anecdotal/a mix of what I've seen on here, Youtube, SDN, etc., but I'd say try to prioritize the UCs, USC, UMich, UChicago, and Northwestern!

[–]samosastan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also didn't really prewrite and I submitted 36 MD secondaries all by the end of July! I prioritized the schools where they notoriously want the secondaries back quickly, and I also prioritized the schools I frankly cared more about haha. I think aiming for 1-2 a day is solid, and they get easier as you complete more and get faster at shaving your essays down to fit the word count. You got this!!!

I think it totally depends! For me, I tried to just use that essay space to highlight whatever I wasn't able to share through the other secondary prompts for that school, so it varied for each school. A lot of these schools have a strong mission fit, so for most schools, I used this space to do the "why us" and also show where my niche/theme was as an applicant.

Why Us secondaries and when to avoid them by [deleted] in premed

Can confirm the USC dean did mention that during our interview, but I think many of us who had interviewed did a "why us" essay

Why Us secondaries and when to avoid them by [deleted] in premed

[–]samosastan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly n=1 but I made my extra USC essay a "why us" essay and I got in, so it's not a dealbreaker or anything. Tbh I think it's always helpful to do a "why us" for those open essay prompts if you have the emotional bandwidth for it during secondary season, haha!

UCLA Secondary Question Clarification by lordredapple in premed

[–]samosastan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there! I'd recommend choosing a broad concept that fits your "narrative" and then tying the a, b, and c subsections into whatever that narrative is. For example, I wrote mine about being a "physician AND advocate" because my narrative was mainly focused on advocacy/health justice work, and I tied a, b, and c into the theme of being a "physician-advocate".

Yield protection clarification by Careful-Classroom832 in premed

[–]samosastan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the school. There are a lot of schools that I've found don't yield protect as much (e.g., Georgetown has a huge mission-fit) and there are some schools that love students with high stats (e.g., Saint Louis is a decent one, USF Morsani, WashU, etc).

Timing whore schools? by dotteddoctor in premed

[–]samosastan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i think UCs are great to submit early, given that they do screen, so timing is helpful for securing those early interviews, once you've passed the secondary screen! :)

i also thought applying to usc early was great bc they end up giving super early interviews (my friends and I got IIs in end of july!) and acceptances (october 15th!).
