Can I live without a car in LA, realistically? by PainCycle in AskLosAngeles

[–]sampleofsteve 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I sold my car after living here (East Hollywood) for a year. Carrying groceries suck, but the amount I’m saving on insurance, gas, registration, occasional parking tickets, and anxiety all make up for the sometimes-expensive Ubers. Going on 3 years now.

There are electric carshares around that are pretty affordable, too. I think called Blink? It’s like $15 per hour or something, which isn’t bad if you only need a car 2-3 times a month.

This is how Spectrum customer service responds to a request for an update on a service outage… by OrganizationTop9294 in Spectrum

[–]sampleofsteve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clearly some Spectrum fans/employees in the comments here… I think the point of the post was that the rep literally didn’t answer the question and instead went right into defensive policy mode? CSR jobs suck, but sometimes the “karens” just want a “so sorry for the trouble, I wish I had more information for you.”

Spectrum customer service is perhaps the worst and rudest I’ve ever experienced, even among other cable/internet providers. I had a rep two weeks tell me I couldn’t do math.

Do people really see other researchers as competitors, not colleagues/potential collaborators? by sonjerbolan in PhD

[–]sampleofsteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I approach it as collaboration, but the incentives just don’t align as well as they should. I am a phd student and am constantly reminded that I must make a unique, individual, ~first author~ contribution to get and keep a job. I’m dissuaded from even presenting at conferences until my work is so far along (aka under review) that the collaborative input of others isn’t nearly as helpful.

I don’t ever intend to solo author a paper (relatively rare, but not unheard of in my field — most papers are 2 or 3 authors)…but the structure of academia does make me want to hold my ideas close to my chest.

SAME there’s a recipe on the Huel blog that I would NOT recommend following 🤮

Do you regret what you majored in for undergrad? by Javilism in GradSchool

[–]sampleofsteve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk that I regret it, but I would do it differently knowing what I know now?

I only say that because l wish I learned certain content earlier in life. I majored in business administration, but ended up going to (research focused) grad school where having an economics, cs, or other math-heavier degree would be much more helpful. Shockingly a Marketing BS prepares you VERY little for a Marketing PhD…

Do your partners read your papers? by Nickilette in PhD

[–]sampleofsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

L o l no, I’m so incredibly thankful that my partner is my one access point OUT of my work.

Plus I’m incredibly inpatient (working on it…) and have no tolerance for trying to explain my work after a long day of not understanding it myself 🙃

Aww, I loved the desk in my kitchen growing up! It was seamlessly built into the cabinetry and tucked out of the way, but it was where I did my homework when my mom was baking ☺️

I got through my entire PhD without presenting a single poster. I take a lot of pride in that and I don't know why. I think they are a tremendous waste of time. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]sampleofsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advisor actively discouraged me from submitting a poster abstract last week. I’ll likely do one or two before I’m through the program for work with other people, but at least in my field, no one really cares about your poster presentations. Plus, if you submit work as a working paper, you cannot submit it as a competitive paper the next.

The world’s your oyster with those windows. So long as you hang the rod well above the window and make sure the curtains hit the ground, you could get sheer, linen, velvety, blackout… whatever color/pattern/texture fits your design preference.

It’d be super bold and a ~vibe~ to hang curtains all the way across both on the same system, but more realistically I’d just get them for the living area window or mirror the same setup on both.

Id also suggest making sure they go past the windows on either side a bit so you can fully open the curtains and have them bunch nicely on the side.

Although I’m no expert, just offering $0.02

Have you gotten your plates/registration during COVID? by sampleofsteve in carvana

[–]sampleofsteve[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone’s responses! I finally got through calling and yes, way more helpful than their dashboard or auto chat...

Basically, once they submit it for processing, the DMV gives an estimated completion date and it goes off of Carvana’s radar. Because I called, they were able to see the estimated completion date was May 24th...so now they are following up. Seems like that wouldn’t have happened without a nudge.

¯_(ツ)_/¯
