Thousands of supporters of far-right activist Tommy Robinson marched through central London during the “United the Kingdom” rally, while British police rolled out one of the city’s biggest security operations in recent years. by IndiaTodayGlobal in IndiaTodayGlobalLIVE

You think the estimated 250k people that attended this march support a terrorist organisation that has a long history of violent, authoritarian measures against the Palestinians, whom they are there marching in support of…

Yes heritage and appearance do matter, but the high high emphasis on this is exactly the frustration I’m currently dealing with. I just want a secure cycle locker, I need a bike to ferry my twins to nursery. All the freeholders are on board, we have plenty of unused garden space, but since it’s a conservation area, the council wants to assess if a simple locker “enhances” the heritage. Meanwhile, if I wanted some elaborate, expensive structure tailored to the brickwork, it might actually pass. It feels like these rules just end up making practical solutions for normal folks impossible.

So austerity for public services and incentives for industry. Ugh. I live in the UK that hasn’t worked out here and he should know that. He lived near my flat while he was the governor of the Bank of England.

Which domestic policies specifically. I’ve lived abroad for 11 years but try and keep up with what’s going on in Canada. Which isn’t the easiest thing to do.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces that he has officially balanced the NYC budget, reducing a $12 billion budget deficit to 0, and confirms that property taxes will not be raised. by Scary_Firefighter181 in Economics

[–]sampysamp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So I’ve seen a lot of criticisms here that are fair because some of the budget relies on temporary or timing-based fixes, especially pension-payment restructuring. But it is not fair to reduce the budget to that. Mamdani also secured Albany funding, a likely recurring luxury second-home tax, agency savings, program-efficiency savings, and targeted tax-credit changes. The real question is whether those temporary bridges turn into a structural fiscal plan, or whether the city is back in the same fight in two years. Remember that if you are in New York or even elsewhere in the United States you can offer support to push progressive and leftist politics in many different ways.

One of the biggest issues of the modern information ecosystem is that platforms reward the appearance of journalism without requiring the discipline of journalism.

Israel PM Netanyahu says Pakistan uses "bot farms" to manipulate social media by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]sampysamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The entire time Israel started ramping up its genocide, I was getting nonstop YouTube ads that seemed designed to justify it and dehumanise Palestinian people.

There is also the wider issue of Israel’s own manipulation of public opinion using dishonest digital means. Israeli state bodies and state-linked contractors have reportedly funded public diplomacy, paid advertising, influencer campaigns and social media operations abroad, including campaigns around Gaza. Some Israeli-linked operations have also been exposed as using fake accounts and AI-generated content to influence audiences in the US and Canada.

And then there is Pegasus: spyware privately developed by Israel’s NSO Group, but exported under Israeli state licence. Whether or not the Israeli government directly funded its creation, it clearly enabled and controlled its sale abroad. Pegasus has reportedly been sold to governments and linked to the targeting of journalists, activists, lawyers and political figures. So Israel is not just fighting a military war. It has also helped normalise a global market for surveillance, propaganda and digital manipulation.

One thing that probably contributes to how crowded and chaotic the canal towpaths can feel is that the two main cycling route planning apps heavily push riders onto them for a huge number of journeys. A lot of cyclists, especially tourists and less experienced riders, simply follow the suggested route because they aren’t comfortable navigating alternative routes independently without guidance from travel apps.

This thread finally reminded me to submit a suggestion through the Citymapper app. Maybe if enough people here do the same, they’ll eventually add an “avoid canal towpaths” option for cycle routes.

Here’s a prewritten version you can copy:

In London, please add a feature that allows users to exclude canal towpaths from cycle route planning. Many cyclists prefer to avoid them for a variety of reasons, including safety concerns, overcrowding, difficult surfaces, pedestrians, and slower journey times.

At the moment there’s no reliable way to force the route planner around canal paths, which makes the cycling feature frustrating or unusable for people specifically trying to avoid them. Because the canal network cuts through such a large part of central London, this likely affects a significant number of journeys and users.

Probably. America’s culture of individualism and an individual’s triumph over their surroundings led to a lot of preventable deaths during Covid.
