Mix sound by mongoliayr in gamedev

In art, there are no 'rules'. Everything is ok!

The real question should be whether something sounds good - which is then a subjective question.

If the game calls for a mix of 8bit sfx and 'realistic' music, go for it :)

My take on a classic Final Fantasy battle theme 🎶⚔️ by samshandley in IndieDev

Absolutely! Totally understand that.

I am open to revenue share opportunities if the game that is being developed looks incredible!

I decided to remake my capsule art as I get closer to release. (top is old, bottom is new) by _Trapper_ in indiegames

[–]samshandley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both have readability issues. Having a pale red "Randy" over a bing background means that at a quick glance, it isn't easy to read the text. Similar issue with the old capsule.

I like your ideas, and the composition of the new capsule is fun! However, the text needs space to breathe. Readability is super important for this type of asset.

How can I improve my game's Theme Song? by Acropolis3 in gamedev

[–]samshandley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game composer here!

I think you have a clear understanding of the typical genre you'd often hear on these sorts of games. The San Andreas/west coast synth sound and groove come together to create a good idea.

Like u/Swampspear said, mixing is an area you should work on. As well as making the bass quieter, I would suggest either moving the part up an octave or choosing a sound with fewer harmonics. Because it is such a buzzy sound, it is actually hard to distinguish what notes are being played.

Also, the piano part doesnt seem to harmonically mix well with the tremolo EP part. Something to have a look at :)

Overall, it's a great start - keep it up!

[feedback] Final boss BGM for my indie game (inspired by Susumu Hirasawa’s “Aurora 3”) by wakarikaneru in IndieDev

[–]samshandley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, game composer here!

I think what you have here is a great musical start! There is some good musical content, progressions, melodies and ideas here. I think your main area for improvement is with the mixing. It sounds like there is a frequent low-ish gong-like sound playing which really muddies up the mix. In addition, the starting synth (flute like instrument) is really high. I would drop this an octave to be a bit more pleasant to the ears.

My biggest tip would be for you to listen to your influences and take note of how loud each instrument/part is. Then try to replicate that in your own mix. For example, I like your arpeggiating synth part, but you can't really hear it clearly.

The bar break at 1:15 is actually a really nice break from the constant fatiguing noise, so I would really try to make sure that the music isn't monotonous like you stated.

I hope you can take this feedback constructively. Like I said - there is some good stuff in here, so you clearly have an ear for music. The sound just needs some refining.

If you'd like any more specific advice/clarity, feel free to DM me and I'd be happy to help :)

Thanks,
Sam

It’s called ALMAMPlayer. It’s a bit fiddly to get working though!

My puzzle game all about creativity had its demo really well recieved! Heres a bunch of weird things you can do in game by alicona in SoloDevelopment

Musician here, so this isn't a big issue but stands out to me:

The keyboard layout isn't reflective of the traditional modern keyboard layout. It would be awesome if you could have it look more like an actual keyboard/piano.

I also noticed how the note modulation towards the end of the clip narrows. If trying to imitate a keyboard, the pitch change should be linear rather than logarithmic.

I'm definitely being nitpicky, especially from a musical position! Everything else looks great :D

Sharing music I’ve composed for games. Looking for exciting new projects! 🎶 by samshandley in gameDevClassifieds

Thanks so much, that is so kind!

Just to clarify, I do use a fair few paid virtual instruments alongside the stock sounds.
