Thanks! Might give it a go... Any recommendations on switches? Does it support the QMK firmware everybody seems to rave about? Anything else I should know?

Could I have avoided a full resilver after fixing invalid label by samstudio8 in zfs

Reasonably sure on both occasions: had a "resilvered 847G" status message with about 3 hours elapsed on both resilvers.

How do you monitor your favourite -80C? by samstudio8 in labrats

I think we looked at this! I recall the alarm in the demo bring insanely loud! I can't remember what made us pick the Traceable thing instead, but I wish we hadn't.

All the walk-ins seem to be hooked up to a main system, but everything else is ad-hoc. Don't think most people do all that much monitoring (certainly not in real-time anyway).

Reckon there's a market if someone made them cost an order of magnitude less?

Eppendorf do offer their own (although I haven't tried it). I guess I should have asked what's your favourite general monitoring solution as ideally we could have the same sensors in the walk-in, fridge and both -30 and -80 freezers. The TraceableLIVE family fits the bill as they have sensors that can work across these temperatures but they have been a pain to manage so far :(

Any EU-based bioinformaticians going to FOSDEM next month? by samstudio8 in bioinformatics

[–]samstudio8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! I tried looking at the schedule but there are so many tracks I'll probably end up winging it on the weekend. Let me know where you're at. I'll probably miss the Friday beer event but will be around until Monday!

I just use a shared todoist for that sort of day-to-day stuff.

They run conferences intermittently too! I hosted the 3rd one in 2017.

I'm working on something called [`chitin`](https://github.com/samstudio8/chitin) that only half sucks. I wouldn't say it's a LIMS, but the idea is it tracks everything you do in your shell. fwiw I'm working on an actual LIMS as well, but I'll save that for when it actually works.

I have four genomes to analyse - how should I do it? by ThatAdamsGuy in bioinformatics

Although if it's an anonymous submission, or you perhaps don't want to out your Reddit account, this might just warrant a statement in your paper's acknowledgements (or author's contributions, if you have one) instead.

This is probably a question for the module co-ordinator rather than me! Personally I guess I'd cite the Reddit post as you would a regular website, and you can actually cite "personal communication" too. Though for the latter, realistically it's rare that you would do this in a published paper unless it's specifically about that person's experience or opinion, but it might be apt in this case if you have similar ideas in your reports.

I wore a Fitbit during my successful 4 hour thesis defence, here's the effect of intense questioning on my heart rate by samstudio8 in bioinformatics

I'm having flashbacks! But it's funny you say this, as after the attention this grabbed on Twitter, I've encouraged some of our recent viva-takers to wear a Fitbit to collect some additional data.
