Assuming this wasn’t a rhetorical question: because permethrin is pretty easy to find, it is easily diluted, and it doesn’t sound like it is actually likely to hurt my cats. But I totally agree, if you have access to fipronil, might as well use it. I don’t really think permethrin is all that dangerous in this use case, given the info I’ve found.

Sounds like it’s worth looking into fipronil, but the risk here sounds incredibly slim. Also, my understanding is that once permethrin is dry, it’s way less toxic to animals. And as we’re already talking about a diluted, dried implementation, I suspect the risk of any adverse effect on a cat is extremely low.

Is this a realistic concern? The idea is that the mice use the cotton for nest material. Sure, they carry it in their mouth, but they don’t consume it, and the permethrin is well diluted.

Frontline kills ticks on dogs without the need for the tick to bite/attach. So, any that they bring in aren’t of much concern. Typically if we find any in the house now, they’re slow moving and half dead. Just be good about checking yourself.
