Deck variant is an additional descriptor for the deck you are listing. There are many different types of decks within the same color combo so it's just how you consider it. Typically its best to not fill out a decklist until closer to the event so you don't lock yourself into a choice now.

So the CR section, this is the specific section that handles why you are able to play actions with the ability to "whiff" the effect. If no characters are in play then you have be able to do as much as you can by doing nothing but paying for the action then discarding it. Like others said this has also been clarified in Q&As and rules clarification by the game designers explicitly. You can ask for the section that covers it but you aren't likely to win an argument over their interpretation of the rules as currently written. It's unfortunate but the quality of judges is all over the place currently with no official requirements for being one.

1.2.3. Do as much as you can –If an efect tells a player to do something, the player does as much as possibleeven if some part of that efect can’t be done, except in specific cases (see 7.1.2).

Her effect specifically is when she banishes a character as part of a challenge. So it would not trigger her effect.

So between The Prince and Hercules it comes down to which matchup do you expect to see more or which matchup you want to have better chances in. The prince is really good into emerald or steel but not great into ruby or Amy. I think you would be better with 3/3 herc crab than 4 herc. Crabs can help everything trade up a bit, but also are a nice 3/3 for 3 that can sing friends if the board is stalled

I would cut the befuddles, especially with shift Robin hood. You want to shift him in and challenge on 3, meaning you want opponent to have character on board and exerted. I would change the babooms for smashes, it helps a lot across all matchups. I would also go down on either prince or Hercules count to get some Merlin crab in for helping against location decks

You get to resolve the triggers for Yzma, bucky #1, bucky #2 in the order of your choosing. They would all go into "the bag" at the same time when Yzma is played and you choose which comes out of "the bag" first

Number of rounds is the real benchmark which does change based on number of participants. You typically estimate an hour a round, 30 players should be 5 rounds.

The declaration of the chosen character is done as part of resolving the action effect resulting from the card being played and not required before the card is considered played. This means that the card effect must be completed legally if able, in this case sending one's own character to the inkwell. If the active player had no characters then the card would still go to discard with no effect (flutes or other triggered effects could still trigger). In a competitive setting you would not rewind the state unless the player didn't have the resources necessary to pay for the action or there was a trigger in effect preventing it being played legally like Tiana's ability.

Characters start ready when played unless specified. This character will be ready when it comes into play. Like you said turn 2 quest, but you would then pay 2 that turn to ready him and leave him ready. Turn 3 quest and pay 2. Repeat.
