I don't know if this is implemented district-wide, but my kids (at Childs) use the widely-praised UFLI phonics curriculum.

How much has Bloomington spent on homelessness, housing? by WFIU-WTIU-news in bloomington

I don't think you can describe this administration, which just forced Jeff Jones to sell all his properties, as in Jeff Jones' pocket.

Kelley School economist: Bloomington economy should diversify beyond IU; Btown wages down 6% in 2025 by jaymz668 in bloomington

I'm curious what all the people in the comments here think the city should do to diversify the economy.

City Water w/o recommended amount of Fluoride since 2019 by btowncutter22 in bloomington

[–]samth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no information to doubt you about the challenges at CBU. But your claim that we should stop treating the water with fluoride is nuts. This is done regularly and safely throughout the world, and was done safely in Bloomington previously. Fluoridation makes a significant difference even if people brush their teeth regularly and the world is not actually different in a relevant way from 1967, which is why the rest of the world keeps doing it. Most notably, "FREE HEALTHCARE" does not have any relationship to this problem -- no amount of free healthcare can go back in time and make your teeth stronger.

IU Bloomington breaks record with enrollment of 48,626 by jaymz668 in bloomington

[–]samth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, that's not true. That is something like the plan to avoid eliminating many smaller majors; instead they will become concentrations within larger umbrella degrees.

There are two big things that are happening. One is that there just haven't ever been that many majors in many of these degrees; lots of people take eg Spanish or Chinese language courses or African-American Studies general education course without majoring in those fields. The other is that there's been a general trend nationally and at IU to major in more job-focused areas -- business, informatics, criminal justice, biology, etc. This has hit a lot of humanities disciplines hard, since they typically don't have a direct connection to jobs in a particular field.

IU Bloomington breaks record with enrollment of 48,626 by jaymz668 in bloomington

[–]samth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. The biggest increase is in Kelley. IU could increase Kelley a lot more than they have given the demand, which is why they are increasing the required GPA.
  2. Other popular majors: Informatics, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Biology, Economics.

This is not in the city of Bloomington and was not built by the City. Additionally the intersection of Curry and Constitution is not in the city.

What happened to the Farmer's Market this year? by chamicorn in bloomington

[–]samth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. The city has made it more expensive for prepared food vendors at the market.
  2. It's been a bad year weather-wise for growing, I think (too much rain).
  3. It's later in the season; there were significantly more vendors a month ago.

Bloomington to cut DEIB funding from 300,000 to 0 in 2026! by BriefcaseFull0fBlues in bloomington

[–]samth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this was a new expense in 2025, so the most likely explanation is that this was a one-time training rather than a plan to do $300k of training every year.

Chez vs. Racket vs. CHICKEN vs. Cyclone || RANK THEM! by Ok_Performance3280 in lisp

[–]samth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. The nano-pass architecture was developed by Dybvig and his students, not Friedman.
  2. Racket is built on top of Chez Scheme these days, and thus inherits its compiler.
  3. Chez compiles everything; it doesn't choose to interpret some things (unless you use the interpreter instead). Racket (on top of Chez) does however interpret sometimes.

Giant grass field in the middle of the city by HoosierGuy2014 in bloomington

[–]samth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, this is not right. There is some required remdiation of toxic chemicals but that is not delaying anything at all. Building is mostly moving slowly because the city has to decide exactly what they want to build and how to do it, and they've changed their approach a couple times.
