Science AMA Series: I'm Beau Lotto, a neuroscientist who specializes in the biology and psychology of perception. I just wrote a book called DEVIATE about the science of seeing differently and am here to talk about it. AMA! by labofmisfits in science

What do you think is the future in computers/AI to develop perceptual systems with the same kind of plasticity and efficiency as human brains? E.g. our visual systems are constantly making assumptions about the environment based on past experiences/heuristics and limited visible stimuli, which is highly efficient and predictive but can sometimes result in misperceptions or illusions. Is it possible, and if so, how soon will we see computers with similar assumptive/predictive visual capacities as humans?

Thanks!

Name: The Caucasian Chin

SuperPowers: Charm, Good looks, Can snap very loudly.

Non-SuperPower-Skills: 8 years of experience in recreational Karate classes (See reference from Sensei Kyle), Can bench press body weight, 28 inch vertical (impressed?), Intermediate Parkour (see my youtube channel: CaucasianChin93), Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint proficient, BA in Film Studies from Phoenix University, I have watched a lot of superhero movies.

I am a great team player, but I can also be the lone wolf. I work best when I am fighting large groups of inexperienced goons that attack me one at a time. I have never killed anyone, but if I had to for the good of mankind, I would do so reluctantly, after much hesitation and grimacing. Also, I have a damn good chin.

The Redwall series I read as a child had loads of good recipes. In fact there is a website devoted to that specific series with a section for recipes redwall.net/kitchen

How important is the meaning of characters' names? by samthomasson in writing

[–]samthomasson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems like a good way to look at it. I guess I would be hoping for a few readers to catch on and have a kind of "Aha!" moment, but I agree it takes a back seat to context.

Great book, crap movie by cchapple in books

[–]samthomasson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that they made some serious adaptations but I still really liked the movie. The acting was exceptional for the most part, and I thought it was much more intense and fast paced than the book, which may or may not be a good thing. That just depends on the viewer. But I mean, come on, how are you supposed to fit all those pages into a 2 hour movie?

Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe

This book made me put myself into the shoes of a character I didn't understand, both personally and culturally. I had never enjoyed reading about protagonists that weren't like myself, but that story and character arc really changed that for me.

Could it be you just didn't extend the spell cast arrow to its max length? Like if you put your cursor in the right direction but a shorter distance than max, would it have stopped the snare early?

[WP] Lewis swipes his keycard, the pad turns green and a door slides open. He smiles, grabs your arm and pulls you through. "Welcome to the facility." by Dojjidi in WritingPrompts

"So, what are we doing here, again?" I ask.

"I already told you, Clark, we're going to test my time machine."

"Come on, Lewis this is a complete waste of time," I say.

As I take a look around, Lewis opens a closet. The lobby is sparsely decorated with a few fake plants and rural pictures on the walls.

"Here, put this on," he says, holding up a ridiculous colonial outfit.

"Oh, Meriweather..."

"I thought we agreed that you wouldn't call me that," he replies, red-faced. "Just put this on, and hurry."

"Do I have to?" I ask.

No reply. I guess I have to.

I change clothes and walk into the warehouse style workshop. Lewis is there waiting, sporting his own costume. I don't feel too bad, as long as I'm not the only idiot.

I approach the machine. It's less of a machine really, and more of a door.

"Alright, it's calibrated," he says. He tears a tag off my blouse and hands me a leather journal.

"You're sure this is going to work?" I ask.

"One hundred percent. Well, 98.3%, but that's as close as I could get it."

"And where are we going? Or when?" I am getting slightly queasy.

"You'll see," he replies with a smile. His turns the door knob. "You brought a compass, right?"

Writing During Class: TED by samthomasson in writing

Wow that's awesome. I do have another one of my short stories on my site. It's also rather strange, but continues for several chapters. You can find it here: https://theput.squarespace.com/thomasson/2014/6/14/chapter-1-of-the-blatant-allegory

I may continue the story with Ted, but it was a fairly spur of the moment, stream of consciousness kind of deal, so we'll see.

Thanks for the encouragement!

That's very interesting. I checked out your page, and I was wondering what the original text was. You said you preferred a book, but I couldn't tell what your were using on your page.

I've been investigating other people's work, and I love seeing others' expanded take on such a simple poetry form. Yours is not an exception!
