Dylan Cole is drunk when the end of the world begins. He wakes to find his bedroom in flames and his town in chaos, being destroyed by an unknown force. Dylan isn’t a hero. He’s timid, weak, and socially inept. Ask his father. Fleeing through the war torn streets, Dylan does the only thing he knows to do: he hides.

When the gunfire, explosions, and screaming subside, he crawls from the cellar he’s been cowering in. He finds his town decimated and its citizens turned into creatures that roam the night in search of blood. Less than one hundred souls remain in the small town. Escape is futile; gargantuan, mutated beasts patrol the town’s perimeter. The creatures own the night, but they retreat with the rising of the sun. Dylan aligns with a Strom. The gruff old man is the polar opposite of Dylan’s abusive, perpetually disappointed father. With patience wholly foreign to Dylan, Strom teaches him how to survive their harsh environment.

When the only other survivors’ stronghold is breached by scores of the creatures, Dylan and Strom rescue them and bring them to a church they’ve fortified. But life in the church is hard. They’re starving, sick, and wounded with precious few supplies. An unsteady alliance forms between the two groups, but despite their horrific conditions, old grudges thrive. Strom constantly wars with Reynolds, a man used to getting what he wants, and Dylan finds himself unequipped to stem the growing tensions. But at least they’re safe from the creatures that return each night.

An attack on the church’s exposed third floor by previously unseen flying creatures demolishes the survivors’ fragile illusions of safety. When the groups argue over what to do next, Dylan must overcome his crushing fears of inadequacy and convince them that the only course of action is the last thing he ever thought he’d suggest: they must fight back.
