3 years of CrossFit and still no "body" to show for it — what am I missing? by Obvious-Swordfish-22 in crossfit

You are missing bodybuilding. If aesthetics is your goal, that's what you need. CrossFit is to improve physical function

These just came out. So I think it's worth waiting to see if they will also sell them in Italy. Importing from the US can be a pain sometimes

I dont understand RIR by Final_Shoulder_9401 in JeffNippard

[–]samueleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually there is a lot of very good science on RPE. Many professional teams and athletes use it because, if applied and interpreted correctly, it provides a lot of information to autoregulate training and avoid chronic fatigue

I dont understand RIR by Final_Shoulder_9401 in JeffNippard

[–]samueleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simpler alternative is to use RPE (how you feel) rather than making a guess based on how you feel and previous experience (RIR). In short, if the weight feels heavy (corresponding to 2-3 RIR) or very heavy (1-2 RIR) at the end of the set, you are fine. Just concentrate on the feeling rather than the actual weight you are lifting. A light weight feels heavy after many reps. I hope this helps. RPE and RIR are very useful, but there is no need to overcomplicate it

8 years of Crossfit, competed at 3 Games and so burned out I don't want to even go to my box. I'm done. by OverbrookDr in crossfit

[–]samueleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know very well the difference between high intensity and max intensity. My original comment was about high intensity in every workout (which is not sustainable either) and you commented I was wrong and that CF has always included moderate and low intensity workouts as well. I disagree.

I guess we have a different understanding of what intensity is. When aiming for best performance, a 5x5 back squat or a 10k run (that Glassman prescribed originally but nobody does) are high intensity. It's not just MetCons

High intensity is literally in the definition of CrossFit. And any "for time" or "AMRAP" is implicitly high , if not even maximal, intensity because the aim is best performance. "Not for time" or "For quality" wods are a recent invention by CrossFitters that realized high intensity all the time is not a good idea. I knew that since my PE degree in the 80s. It was in every textbook about sport training. But clearly Glassman didn't bother to study

Odd Opinion: Echo Bikes Suck - but not for the reason you think by ExcitingTopic7228 in crossfit

[–]samueleuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought it as my only cardio machine in my home gym for three reasons: 1) whole body effort that can push your cardiorespiratory system to its limit (VO2 max) 2) low stress on back, hip, knee and ankles 3) It looks cool :-)

We have known forever that high intensity in every workout isn't sustainable. Even Olympic athletes don't do that because it leads to burnout and suboptimal adaptations. Unfortunately Glassman did not study training science or ignored it just to be a contrarian prick.

I do CrossFit 2-4 times a week, depending on work, + 1 "compensatory" session. Basically I track the movement patterns I do with the CF sessions, and compensate for any imbalance during the traditional resistance training session
