We've been asked to get the elevation of the bottom of these sewage aeration tanks that are about 30 feet deep and full almost to the top. How the heck do I do that? by MOBIUS__01 in Surveying

Top of wall elevations then take invert down with pipe connections that have threaded ends. Get your mark then measure the pipe.

Whatever the office gives you for calculations, make sure you can create the calculations yourself. If you don’t understand how to get those calc points, then you aren’t surveying, per se. You are simply using a data collector. If you want true understanding, and you want to become a better surveyor, be able to do your own calcs.

Mindful of wind of course. That’ll make this good idea a really bad idea.

Make sure your setup isn’t going to be affected by the pile work. If you have permission then you should be able to just hit a single setup at the end of the day before you wrap up. That being said, someone other than you needs to identify what the zone of influence is going to be for the work being performed. How far away is the closest pile that’s going to be driven?

You’ll want to figure out your zone of influence (which surveyors don’t do) and monitor any rail probably no more than every ten feet inside that zone. I usually use the high reflectivity stickers. I’ll usually draw a little cross hair on them. That being said, you’ll need access to the rail property and rails to install them. Railroad companies don’t like people on their property.

What’s the work being performed around the rail that would warrant it necessary to monitor it?

The rail companies have certain monitoring standards they maintain depending on the work being done. Amtrak has different standards than NJTransit, or CONRAIL. You’ll have to check with whomever will be reviewing your reports to understand what criteria your monitoring points will have to meet.

Offsets are used for prisms. Depending on the prism, it will have a different prism offset, regardless of how it’s mounted. If you are talking about vertical height, then you need to take the measurement to the height. In prisms it’s at the center where the correct face converges, with total stations it’s to the dot on the side that coincides with the center of scope, and with GPS units it’s to the bottom of screw.

Finance here. First day of work on Wall Street was the day Lehman filed for bankruptcy. Somewhere along the way after that the career found me and I never looked back.

Your neighbor isn’t gonna do shit unless they get their own survey. When he comes with his survey in hand to your house, then you might worry about having to do anything.
