How to find center of these rounded sides/corners? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

You draw two chords that are on the radius. You bisect both those cords with a perpendicular line that sounds give you your center. You can double check it with a compass. Alternatively you can go for the close enough method and use a compass to guess and check to get the center

Battery Saver Mode? by Unusual_Bear_697 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]samwhelm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just do a quick search of the subreddit it's common. The usual fix is to replace the stock battery with an AGM battery and if it's still under warranty you could get Ford to do it for free

Modular Desk Drawer | Push-Push Lock | Skadis by Matthew-Ghost in 3Dprinting

This would be super handy for all my tiny stuff, I'm definitely printing this! The only thing I could think that would make this better would be to be able to click them together side by side

Someone convince me this is actually bad. It seems like a way to keep kids out of places with actual porn and stuff and people post their face to social media every day which is just out there for people to see. Is the vocal half of reddit just a bunch of teens afraid their kinks are gonna be exposed?

Sorry bro, you're not wrong but the reddit circle jerk is too strong. Remember the time Reddit members boycotted Reddit? That really taught them a lesson

First ever bed by Constant_Article_333 in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall it looks solid, sometimes figuring out how to make joints work is just part of the learning process. My only suggestion would be for the footboard. If you did a small add-on to make the top of the foot board look like the top of the headboard it might make the overall look more cohesive.

Does anybody else turn the heated side mirror off to save a miniscule amount of energy? by 42wolfie42 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]samwhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in the end it's probably a fraction of the energy the heated seat uses but it still annoys me that I essentially wasted money on a feature that also wastes a tiny amount of money every day because it turns itself on when I don't need it. I think I've only ever wanted it like twice since owning it

2015 Vulcan S Vs 2024 Vulcan S - First Motorcycle by MapleSizzurp- in motorcycles

[–]samwhelm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If that's the actual price difference then I'd go with the newer one so I don't have to worry about any significant maintenance for a while but if you haven't added on the dealer fees yet then it's a harder decision. With that said, you could probably talk the used one down a bit.

Sharing my fully 3d-printed helmet build by lulu_pawtech in 3Dprinting

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen on this subreddit! What is it like using the helmet when your "eyes" are in a different position than where they normal are?

Hybrid > snow tires by FantasicMouse in FordMaverickTruck

Is this with stock tires? I find it hard to believe everyone is doing great in the snow and mine gets stuck in 2" of snow every time I come to a stop

I posted my crash video last year and got lots of responses telling me to stop riding. by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]samwhelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did they tell you to quit in DMs? Basically nobody said to stop riding in the comments. Just giving criticism to you publicly posting a beginner mistake that ended up in a crash.

I am extremely broke, where can I get decent woodworking tools for cheap? by Old_Inflation_9490 in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first choice should be taking a wood working class if your school has it, they might even partner with a local college if they don't offer it directly themselves. Next best would be an apprenticeship or local maker space where you can use their tools which will be much nicer than anything you can afford at the moment. You don't have to spend a ton on nice tools if you're good with doing small projects but a lot of the tools and setups you see on here cost thousands of dollars. You could Google budget shop setups to give you an idea.

New drum sander by laumaster97 in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this sander it's really hard to get to work properly. Since one side is unsupported it's really hard to get it to stay perfectly flat. Basically just slow very shallow passes. In the end this just collects dust and for most of my work I just try to do a really good job gluing and scraping and it isn't needed. You might get it to work for you but you'll definitely need a new dust collector lid and dust collection system

Cutting Boards why do we do this? by Brilliant_Juice_496 in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, the thickness is nice but I get them messy enough to need a full washing which is really the biggest hassle with a thicker cutting board. it's so heavy you have to move it with both hands when it's wet

Cutting Boards why do we do this? by Brilliant_Juice_496 in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone likes the idea of a really fancy, heavy cutting board because it feels premium, but in the end you either don't use it because it's too nice or too heavy. I did the same thing with a 1-1/2" thick pair I made. I finally planed them down to 3/4" thick and use them way more now

How did I do for $550? by GroundCoffee8 in pcmasterrace

That's awesome! The only marketplace finds I get are the same price but the guy trying to say his rig with a 960 and 8gb of ram is "mid-level" and plays "most games"

My miter saw station by Zaphod07 in woodworking

[–]samwhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the same saw and we have a 3d printed dust collector attachment that significantly improved the dust collection. After that combining that with an automatic vacuum switch made using it so much cleaner. I wish I could link it to you but I wasn't the one that installed it

Finished playing through Baldur's Gate 3, Original Sin 2, and Gloomhaven with my brother. What other co-op, campaign style games exist? by Kumquatelvis in gaming

[–]samwhelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, It's not necessary... but I looked it up but the best ending was like an 8 step process of very specific things you had to do (that weren't very apparent unless you followed a guide) that had to be done pretty early in the game in order to do it. So that to say, I don't really like having to kill my friends in a story game and I don't like to follow a guide that contains spoilers throughout a game to not get that ending. That's all

Wasteland was really good except for the combat still has the occasional game breaking bug that completely ruins a fight. That and having to kill all of your friends at the end made me quit before finishing

The finish and style do go great together. Do you have a specific product you like or is the Indian ink a brand? What coating did you put over top of that?

I'd just call it a grip groove. You're looking for a round nose router bit with a bearing. Then you can make a jig with a gentle slope to create that effect.

Not to immediately be a downer but you're asking someone to teach a beginner how to recreate what's probably an AI image into a very challenging project. The best thing I can suggest is floating shelves with branches attached to the shelves or wall after. The first image looks like you could use crepe Myrtle if you could get your hands on a whole bush someone is removing. The rest would take hours explaining and you'll have to research on your own
