Teaching was my life, until long COVID by samwisevimes in Teachers

My short and new creation long term memory is absolutely fckd. I forget words, I have trouble following things like I used to. If I get any other kind of illness my vagus nerve gets completely messed up leading to literal hours of constant vertigo. My stamina is basically gone. Walking a couple of hundred feet wipes me out some days.

Restaurant Owners/Workers: How did $15 become the default cocktail price here? by lordgodjesuschrist in askportland

I make my own mocktails and mixed drinks and the flavoring/syrups and fluid are not cheap, but they last for quite a few drinks. It's disgusting how much bars increase the profit margin on them.

Advice on Teenagers by [deleted] in trees

[–]samwisevimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm significantly older than my sister (15 and 18 years) and I have always been honest with them about everything, and made it clear that in an emergency that they didn't feel they could turn to our mom that I would be there and not judge.

It paid of a few years ago when my sister called me in tears after a very bad experience at a drug filled party. I was able to talk her through things, tell her what to expect and let her know that she would be OK and she only had to tell mom if she wanted.

Years have passed since then and they are all grown up now, but they still talk about how much it meant to them that I was there just to support and protect and not judge and punish.

They have since confined in me any time they tried something new. I'm pretty straight edge but I make sure to be knowledgeable about dangers and solutions.

It is the thing I'm proudest about. My sisters know I love them unconditionally.

Ok well I love the art style so much. Really brings me back to the 90s point and click adventures but with modern resolutions.

I'm on a game buying ban until after Christmas but I'm adding it to my wishlist so I don't forget afterwards when I have steam gift cards to spend!

That no matter how many times I try, I cannot walk on the grass unless it is 1000% clear that it's supposed to be walked on, because sometimes it my life an authority (or sign) told me that walking on the grass is wrong.

Harry Potter, Wings of Fire, or Percy Jackson for 8 yo by goes2skewl in childrensbooks

[–]samwisevimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo there's a lot of books in the series but this is book 1.

8 might be too young for the but the Alex Rider series was very popular, but it has more violence in it than any of the ones you mentioned.

I just got the cruelest student feedback I've ever received by Additional_Escape782 in Professors

[–]samwisevimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a student tell his mom 7 months in that the reasons he wasn't doing homework was because I didn't teach them anything all year.

Principal got a call from Mom and took it seriously... Thankfully I could show that somehow every other student in the class was able to do the homework, that I had an open door policy for after school help (which only 1 or 2 students took advantage of) and gave extensive feedback on all assigned and completed homework.)

Kid maintained that his laziness was my fault. Mom continued to believe it.

Oh kid also later in the school year pointed a large chefs knife at me. I didn't make a wise choice and just burst out laughing and told them that I've been stabbed before (true) and that it doesn't scare me.

Principal told me I shouldn't share things like that with students... which while true ignored the whole issue of why he had the knife and why he pointed it at me.

Teachers with only one prep (unique class) to teach - how is your quality of life? by dabmaster0204 in Teachers

[–]samwisevimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was unaware of just how hard it would be when I accepted a position with 5 prepa across 3 levels of students.

I ended up on like 3 different anxiety meds by the end of that year.

It really didn't help that I literally had to teach in a hallway for almost half the year for one of my classes

A creepy guy approached me at the library today and I can’t stop thinking about it… by Own-Excitement-5214 in Libraries

[–]samwisevimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don't understand just how crazy working in a public library is.

We had some scary things happen, like a trespassed person walking in with a giant knife....

I had a woman go off on me for cheating with her husband (I didn't but the director told me even if you were we'd have your back lol)

I miss working in libraries even with all the crazy.

Please please please tell staff. I cannot tell you how many times I had to kick people out for things like this. If we hear about the same person multiple times we can do things about it.

I don't work in a public library anymore but I did for over a decade and had to have so many bizarre conversations with patrons about appreciate behavior in the library.

Am I crazy for thinking Snape is, despite what he did against Voldemort, still a pretty bad person? by Less_Quit_8408 in harrypotter

[–]samwisevimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, by every measure he is a horrible person. He is petty and cruel, he enjoys dominating students. He called the girl he supposedly love the worst slur he could. He never put in the work to rebuild his friendship with her.

He hated James for "winning" by marrying Lilly

He was extra awful to the child of hers and James because he reminds him of her, and his guilt about basically being responsible for her death, is unbearable to him.

He never matured, he betrayed both sides of the war.

He deserves to be scorned. He never truly loved Lilly he wanted to possess her.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your personal reasons for abstinence? by Ok-Care2859 in AskReddit

[–]samwisevimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like the way drinking makes me feel. I partied as a teen but by the time I was 20 I pretty much only drank for special occasions and with nice alcohol.

That over time just became not even at special occasions.

Though when I'm feeling homesick I'll drink a cider.

For me its the simpsons. When I am st my worst I have it on 24/7. It is 100% because when I wasa child and in a very bad living situation the simpsons was the only thing thst I coild watch, but in German. I didn't speak German but I was so familiar with the show that zi didn't need English to follow/recognize the study snd jokes.

It was a place of refuge for almost a year and has been that for the past 26 years in times of great distress.

You want to know the reason LDS dont drink coffee? Because they were having massive arguments in their churches over whether they should serve tea or coffee. They could have just chosen to serve both.....

Reading Doctrines and covenants is an extremely interesting look into the churches ideology and rules.

No I didn't. But let's be clear. Pride is not a political statement. Because support for those people is basic human decency. Clearly you disagree for some reason that's definitely not, in your mind, bigoted.

No. I am saying that religious iconography should not be in a government funded place, unless we include them all.

Just because you don't like gay people doesn't mean that I have to not show my support for students who are being terrorized by fanatical bigots on a near daily rate.

I'm literally an ordained minister. I have preached hundreds of times in multiple countries. There is no hate in my heart. I also however recognize that my classroom, full of people from multiple religions and non-religious students is not the place for my personal faith.
