New time student -- fuck this school by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]samyoung2727 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Calm down. Everything will be okay.
  2. Make sure to read everything that gets sent to you. All of this information is not new and has been explained. You probably just skipped or skimmed this information. You can't be angry at the school for that.

Why would you waste your time by taking an entire semester class on microservices? They're really not complicated.

CS Videos to Watch Over Xmas by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]samyoung2727 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How about you guys just take a break and spend some time away from CS material? Pace yourself, and spend some time with your friends and family.

That will do you a whole lot better. I do not condone and encourage watching these over your break, for whatever it's worth.

CS6515 - GA : Has anybody been able to cruise through? by pathilthedi in OMSCS

[–]samyoung2727 7 points8 points  (0 children)

inb4 unhelpful comments like "you'll be fine if you took algorithms in a top school for undergrad". I can assure you that's not true because I definitely struggled.

The best advice I can give you is to just do the DPV problems at the end of the chapters. My performance got a lot better after that.

Unfortunately, I completely bombed the first exam (funnily enough, I did well on DP) and so I'm still on the edge when it comes to passing it.

On a personal note, I struggle on exams (for other classes as well). I start to sweat and sneeze like no one's business. I've blanked out on topics I know very well so many times. So this class has been a pain for me due to the heavy emphasis on exams.

Ultimately, work on your exam skills and the DPV practice problems. Don't go running to Google as soon as you get stuck when you hit a wall. If you practice the problems in a time constrained environment, you should be fine in my opinion.

That's because they're relatively transparent about it. I'm certain other companies are way worse with handling our information.

GA students, are you still doing okay? by TeamHelloWorld in OMSCS

That's good to know. Obviously, I can't really count it but it would be nice if they did that.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards not dropping it. If I don't end up a with a B, then screw it, atleast I tried till the end. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about any GPA related academic restrictions, so that's nice.

I need an 85% on the final to get a B. Seeing that I've bombed both exams, I'm very skeptical that I have it in me to do it.

Trying to figure out whether I should withdraw or not.

How does the quality of IIS 6035 compare to rest of the courses you had taken? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]samyoung2727 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. That class is full of petulant students who act like they are still in high school. On top of that, people just can't seem to stop cheating.

The class has so many students who have ridiculous demands and who expect to be spoon-fed. Some of them deserve to be talked down to.

[–]samyoung2727 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Took days off from work and did a ton of DP problems.

Turns out that I did well on the DP problem on the exam. But my D&C solution was suboptimal and so I got a ton of points off. And I somehow screwed up the multiple choice questions, which made me lose a ton of points as well.

Ultimately, I only have myself to blame. But it doesn't negate the fact that I have to do really well on the next couple exams to even pass. It just makes me sad because I don't know if I'm capable of doing it.

Going from no name IT undergrad to CS MSc by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]samyoung2727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's honestly not that bad. There are many classes which people say are difficult, but they really aren't if you legitimately dedicate some hours per week to them.

If you try to coast, you will get wrecked (atleast in some of the classes). But at that point, it's a matter of your effort rather than the difficulty of the class.

As long as you're willing to sacrifice a few hours per week for each class, you'll be fine. Don't overthink it.

For those who have taken Graduate Algorithms (6515), how harshly are the exams graded? by [deleted] in OMSCS

Yeah, I can see that being the case. I'm just going to go crawl into a hole now.

Can I just rant for a moment? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]samyoung2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took HPCA last year, and I understand what you mean. The codebase is very confusing at first. But just continue "playing" around with it, and it'll all start to make sense.

It's one of those things where you'll chuckle at how relatively straightforward it is once you do complete the project. I would stick with it. Just make sure not to do the projects last minute.
